Grow a pair and smoke your cigars. Just don't do it in their house, that is rude. :tu

Cigar_Noob 10-23-2009 11:49 PM

Re: Smoking is bad for you

hehe I wouldn't smoke them in the house anyways.

Tell your parents you are into bestiality while standing naked with your cat in your arms, they'll forget all about your cigars

lol...however more serious advice would be awesome too ;)

Re: Smoking is bad for you

Here is some serious advice - although you may not like it.

My advice is to listen to your parents. I say this because I am guessing that you not only live with them but they clothe and feed you. They obviously care for you and whether or not their concern is justified, you should respect their wishes. Once you have become self-supportive and are on your own, then you will be able to call your own shots.

This is not what you wanted to hear but you did ask for advice.

mhmm not really what I wanted to hear but I AM looking for advice, at the moment me and my parents are friendly discussing it.

An honest and open dialogue is good.

Re: Smoking is bad for you

While I understand your plight I also understand Pnoon's point of view. Kind of a "My house my rules" sort of thing. As someone who started smoking cigarettes at a young age I had the arguments with my parents as well. Having gone through that, I have to say that there is no really good argument to use against the "smoking is bad for your health" topic. The fact is that smoking can lead to health problems.

As an adult, we choose to do things that might be against other people's beliefs and/or choices. That's just us expressing ourselves in the way we choose. There's nothing wrong with that, but truly if you are living under someone else's rules then a certain amount of respect is warranted.

I solved my problem with my parents by moving out at a young age. And while smoking definitely was not the issue that lead to this decision it was a factor as well. The choice is really up to you. Continue to live under your parents rules and regulations and abide by their wishes (hoping that one day you can reasonably persuade them to see your side) or move out and do your own thing.

Hope that helps.

Re: Smoking is bad for you

Great advice given so far. If it was me I would listen to my parents but from time to time I'd go to a B&M or another cigar smoke friendly place and enjoy a cigar or two.

bobarian 10-24-2009 01:05 AM

Re: Smoking is bad for you

As the others have said, as long as you are living in your parents home, you must live and respect their rules. There really is no argument, smoking is indeed bad for you. The fact that cigar smoking may be "less bad" is not relevant. Once you are out of the house you may or may not decide to continue smoking, then it is your decision. Perhaps you can come to a compromise that allows you to smoke when away from home(fishing, etc) It sounds like you have a good relationship with your family continue to discuss this with them in a non argumentative way. :2

Re: Smoking is bad for you

my parents paid me 500€ for not smoking until i turn 18. I am not allowed to smoke inside but i am allowed to smoke on the balcony. My mom is fine with me smoking cigars and even likes sometimes the smell of them.
My older brother is the one who is driving me nuts. he is always commenting how my cigars are stinking when i leave the balcony door open (i leave it sometimes open because he locked me unintionally out during the winterand i had to stay there from 10pm till 2 am)
Since your living at your parent you dont have many options.
1) get your father into smoking cigars on a special occasion (new years cigar, birthday, victory cigar...)
2) tell your parents that you can understand their concerns and accept the house rules.

As the parent of two boys (19,21) college students living at home I agree with pnoon 100 percent. Although I don't agree with your parents you live there and need to abide by the rules ;s

Re: Smoking is bad for you

yup. I agree with everybody else. It's their house and they get to make the rules. but since you're 18, I'd suggest finding a shop with a nice lounge where you can enjoy your smokes. Most have tvs and wifi.

as far as "ammo", I believe someone here posted the statistics of cancer rates among people who smoke a few cigars a week vs. people who don't smoke at all, and the results basically indicated that statistically there was no difference. but it's kinda of a hard argument to make y'know? I mean, they certainly aren't good for you, but just how bad they are is sometimes blown out of proportion. Your best bet is to combat their emotional response with cold hard facts. but in the end, it's still their house.

Are your parents prohibiting you from smoking completely or just around the house? If it's the latter this is what I say:

If you really want to smoke a cigar be smart about it. If you're not allowed to smoke inside or around the house just get creative. Find a B&M, a clearing in the woods (Vermont has woods right?), smoke on the porch of a friend's house, drive out to some field some where and enjoy a cigar.

If your parents are not letting you smoke at all you should probably sit down and have a serious conversation about this hobby and what the actual health risks are.:2 Like pnoon said, open dialog is vital.

Some websites and studies dealing with health and cigars:

1. http://cancercontrol.cancer.gov/tcrb/monographs/9/ - The National Cancer Institute monograph on cigars, pretty comprehensive. Compelling reading, but it is tinged with some exaggerations and bias. Overall a good read though.

2. Two responses to the NCI study above: http://www.cigardiary.com/index.php?...age&PAGE_id=30

and

http://www.cigarcyclopedia.com/webap...th%2090207.pdf

3. http://www.cigargroup.com/faq/health/ - Great resource for most of the major scientific studies done on cigars and health effects the last 40 years or so.

4. http://stogiefresh.com/journal/Cigar...r_Science.html - The entire website is operated by a doctor I believe and has a lot of good information not only on some interesting science behind cigars, but reviews, and cigar history articles as well. Here is an article about cigars vs cigarettes particularly health risks : http://stogiefresh.com/journal/Cigar...igarettes.html

Re: Smoking is bad for you

My advice is to go to college somewhere far from your parents. When I was 20 I packed everything I could into a Volkswagon bug and drove 500 miles away to go to San Diego State. They never tried to tell me what to do again.

While you live with them, you just have to be sneeky. You are 18, so make your own decisions. You're old enough to vote and die for you country so your old enough to enjoy a stogie in my book. Just don't smoke near their house and read some of the threads on getting rid of cigar smell.

Old enough to vote, old enough to die for your country....I guess that would make one old enough to get their own place where they can make the rules. ;)

However, you do have a much, much greater change of dying by getting the flu or even driving to school or work than dying of cigar smoking.

I just want to make something clear with all of you. You are all pretty much quoting others saying don't argue with the parents its their rules, and move out and such, but I feel it necessary to just point out...I'm taking your guys advice..I wasn't even planning (from the beginning) to put a cigar in my mouth till the parents choose to let me....I'm not one for being that much of a rebel ;)

Google Cigarettes vs. Cigars, spend some time reading, educate yourself on the subject.

Listen to your parents while you're under their roof, and leaving just to smoke cigars would be more than stupid, IMHO

Good thinking. As stated above, once you are self-sufficient and have your own place where you are "out of the nest" then you will have more freedom to do what you want. You have plenty of years ahead of you to take up cigars if you wish. I didn't start smoking cigars until I was 49 for instance.....I'm 39 now....it's a miracle tell ya! :ss

Respect their wishes and keep a low profile with it and things will probably work out okay. There's no arguement you can make that will change their minds on the issue. As a parent, peace on the home front is a good thing.

My mother hates the fact I smoke cigars and never misses a chance to voice her opinion about it . She smoked cigarettes when she was pregnant with me and my older sister . I haven't lived with my parents for about 15 years now . My house runs on my rules . Alot of good advice given here . Just walking out the front door of your house can be hazardous to your health . For that matter life is hazardous to your health . :ss

Re: Smoking is bad for you

I have been in your exact position, with the parents not to fond of my cigar habit (they still aren't, but I live 5,000 miles away and am now 27, so not a big issue). I lived with my parents when I first started smoking and I followed many of the suggestions here: I kept my smoking away from their house. I would smoke at a B&M, and make sure that lots of time went by before I went home, to make sure the smell was dissipated as my mom is very sensitive to smoke smells. I would smoke on camping trips, golfing, or while out and about. My dad does enjoy an occasional cigar, and we would smoke when golfing together, or when he had a lot of time without my mom around.

Once I moved out, I could smoke when and where I wanted. I moved back in with my parents a few years later for a short time and went back to the limited smoking and only doing so away from them, even though at that point they had grown to accept that I smoked cigars. It is awesome that you have your parents' blessing, and that you are respectful enough to follow their rules and not smoke until you got it. My only suggestion would be that, even with their blessing, you should still be respectful if they do not like the smell of smoke and be sure to smoke away from their home.

Regardless if you are self sufficient and independant, your parents will always tell you not to smoke, not to do drugs, etc. They are your parents and want the best for you. Eventually they'll have to learn to accept you for who you are, but you're young and living in their home, so that will take time :)
