how do you light up a cigar?

Seems I've seen and heard many variations on how to light up a cigar.

Me, I torch the end until it's charred then take a few puffs with a butane lighter until it's evenly lit.

I've heard puffing it as you start and roasting the tip til its lit.

Any thoughts on the best way?

What ever you feel comfortable doing is always the best way. :tu

I have a 3 and 4 burner torch and light it right up while drawing on it. Works for me.

I think it is hard to say the "best way." There is a video of a guy lighting a cigar several different ways. I have tried them all such as lighting with matchs while taking puffs and not taking puffs. I have torched them and used soft flames. For me I like a 3 flame torch to get it started than i use a single flame torch to touch it up and or even it out if need be. I will look around and see if i can find the video.

Found it

Go down through the videos and it is almost the last one. How to light a cigar

I toast the foot focusing on the outside until it is evenly lit. Then I smoke the heck out of it!!!

Hope you can post the video would enjoy it. I mostly smoke 52++ RG stogies and that makes some difference in lighting. I use a micro torch and light the center area as I turn it. Then when heated up good I give it a puff out then take a puff or two. Afterwards I touch it up with the Ronson to smooth out the burn. Works pretty good that way for me. Lighting is half the fun!:tu

I get the outside of the foot toasted/lit all the way around then puff straight on with the lighter a inch away from the foot to get the rest going.

That's the method I use too. I use matches when indoors and a Bic when outside. Could be my imagination but for me a torch can cause a bit of harshness in smoking the first half inch or so. Just my :2

My wife loves the torch lighter though and has no complaints so could be it's just me. :D

Uhh...flame? :r

Somebody on the old site had a great story about this. If I remember it right, he was in South America visiting his wife's family and bought a box of cigars for everyone. He went through his usual lighting routine of cutting, toasting the foot and so on. One of his wife's relatives shook his head, said "Why do you Americans make everything so complicated?", took a cigar, bit the end off, and lit it straightaway with his Zippo.

Personally I prefer a torch lighter (though I've even used paper matches in a pinch).

I'm with the people that toast the foot until it is evenly chard and then take a few puffs to make sure it is lit. Touch-ups if necessary then smoke away :ss

If I'm herfing or just smoking a cigar out on my porch, I'll do the whole toasting routine. On the golf course I light my sticks more like a cigarette, except I rotate it while taking a few puffs to get as even a light as possible, then purge.

Seems to be easiest. Sometimes I wonder if I should use my MAPP Gas solder torch. Might be easier and faster.

:r

I suppose it wouldn't make much of a difference on my dollar sticks.

My mom doesn't let me play with fire so I use a magniying glass on a sunny day. It takes a while.

I either toast then draw while applying the flame, or go pretty heavy on the torch then blow on the lit end to make sure its evenly lit, then have at it.

Also I meant to ask if anyone else has as much trouble with torch lighters as me. I've been through 5 or 6 lighters (good ones like colibri and firebird) this summer. They end up not igniting or sparking. Maybe I need to go to a different way like matches only.

Get yourself a Ronson Jet Lite. You can find them for <$4 at Wally World and Walgreen's.

Ronson Jetlite @ $2.96/Walmart will light one strike every time and ticks for a long long time.

I have a Dupont X-tend about 3 years old and it is very dependable also.

Blazers are very dependable but some questions about life expectancy beyond a year or so. Very Good Though.:2

Toast foot evenly and then puff away. :ss

Re: how do you light up a cigar?

I try not to let the foot get too close to the flame, just barely putting the edge next to the top of the flame and rotate until it gets going all the way around. Then I put the flame up to the foot while I take few shallow puffs to get the whole thing orange. The smaller the RG, the easier the process. If I'm smoking a lancero or something really thin, I don't bother toasting.

It makes me cringe when I see people just burn the crap out of the end, taking huge puffs with the flame on the foot.

Thanks for the posts people. I'll check out the ronson jet lite.
Hate spending $ on lighters. Rather spend it on a good cigar!

Have a great one!
