I finally bought a handgun.

I've carried a protection permit for 20 years, but I've not owned a handgun in my adult life. I never felt good about a handgun in the house with kids. Always shot someone else's or the old man's or my brother's or girlfriend's.
I taught my daughter how to shoot when she was about 8, but we haven't gone shooting for about a year. She's a lethal weapon. She can group as well or better than her Dad.
It's Fall here in PA now, and that's shooting time, and I want to take the baby girl shooting. She's big enough to handle the 9mm now, she's learned how to shoot on a .22 Ruger.
Grice's (a great big gun shop right over the hill from here) had a big sale this month.
I landed this Smith & Wesson Sigma SW9VE, holster, and 500 rounds of 9mm frangible ammo for under 400 bucks.
So far I burned up 250 rounds.
At 30 feet I can put 14 out of 15 in a 6" group 100% of the time, rapid firing (about 15 seconds for 15 rounds). The gun is perfectly balanced for me, the recoil is perfect, and the sights settle in before I'm even ready to bark another round off. I have to slow myself down.
At 30 yards, I can only put about 6 or 7 out of 15 in a 6" group.
I'm gonna try to talk my little brother into running across the range with a paper plate on a stick and see how I do. :r
Anyways, here she is...

Nice giong Scott. I've avoided having a handgun in the house too for the same reason, not comfortable having one with kids around. I do keep a 12ga pump shotgun in the bedroom closet though.

Hopefully they're the ones he's going to use when his brother carries the paper plate. :D

Very nice Scott! Having a CCW permit is a great insurance policy. Nice choice of gun too. How are you going to carry it? In waist band (WB) or outside waste band (OWB)

Very nice Scott. I've got a little Acutek .380 that was gifted to me years ago and I've wanted to get something more substantial but my money keeps finding it's way to more cigars first:D.

Aren't those green bullets made of kryptonite in case Superman turns evil again like in Part III? :r

That holster in the first pic has a belt clip. It works well.
I won't be carrying it around.
If I need it in case any of the town junkies start crawling through the windows, I feel good knowing I can dump a pound of lead in their melon before they get all the way in. :tu

Nice pistol. My eyesight isn't what it used to be, so I don't shoot hardly at all anymore without a scope (at least a red dot). Sold all my weapons and use a friend's "armory" when I want to shoot anymore. Pics like this make me pine for a nice Kimber.

I don't know how you deal with it. I would go crazy with those gun laws.

Re: I finally bought a handgun.

On one hand I'm jealous because we don't really have guns so much in the UK and they seem like a lot of fun..but on the flipside I'd rather we're not allowed to carry them based on the sole evidence of how many gun related deaths there are in the US. It just seems too easy to pick up a gun if you know others might have them when having mediocre arguements when fists do the job well enough.

Still, if I was offered the chance to have one I'd go for it, as long as I was the only one!

Lovely gun. I reckon you could squeeze in a stogie into that case though.

Nice pickup Scott. CCW holder for 10 years myself. Rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.:tu

Re: I finally bought a handgun.

That was my first handgun.

I could not sight it for ****. I even took it to a Gunsmith and he could not get it sighted.

I'd aim at the target and hit the dirt and I have expert Marksman for the .45, 9mm, and M16 so I'm no rookie at shooting.

It's frustrated the **** out of me. I hope yours works better.

Better to be judged by Twelve than carried by six.

I took my bud with me and all he could do is shoot at his feet.
Couldn't put one in a 6" plate from 30 feet. Shot down and to the left at least three feet when I could even spot it.
He's a Marine, too. Frustrated the hell out of him.
We're gonna get some big sheets of paper and see what he's doing.
It's the easiest shooting handgun I've ever used, so I was just as baffled as he was.

Re: I finally bought a handgun.

Scott,

The best advice I could give is: dry fire practice. Buy some "A Zoom" snap caps and dry fire, lots. Paste an appropriate target on a "safe place". I use a 1" black dot on a piece of paper at 7 yards. Dry fire for 20-30 minutes or until you get tired. After weeks of dry fire, you should see improvement. When shooting, have someone load a snap cap somewhere in your magazine and watch you shoot. Any flinching problems will be readily apparent when your striker falls on a snap cap.

When you dry fire, no live ammunition anywhere in the room. Assume the pistol is always loaded. Never pull the trigger when the gun pointed at something you do not want to destroy. Many good shooters spend as much if not more time dry firing than shooting live rounds.

Every time I pick up a handgun, I check the chamber and mags. If I set the gun down for a minute, I check it again.

I'm not familiar with the Sigma but, if it's like other striker fired pistols, you should be be able to pull the slide back partially to reset the striker and be able to dry fire. No need to pull the slide back all the way and eject the snap cap, re-load into a mag and re-cycle.

Main focus should be on your front sight with the target being somewhat blurry.

You should always load ammo (or snap cap) from the mag. Don't drop one in the chamber and drop the slide. Not good on the extractor and, if the firing pin is stuck so it's protruding from the breechface due to a jammed firing pin or broken firing pin spring, you can have a "slam fire". Don't drop the slide on an empty chamber. Not good for the pistol. Just "ride the slide" down when closing the slide on an empty chamber. I then pull the trigger while pointing the pistol in a safe direction as an additional check. Some folks keep a bucket of sand handy to do this with.

Safety first. Do not get distracted. Always check and double check your chamber and mag. When unloading, always drop the mag first then rack the slide and check the chamber. Really check the chamber. Drop a pencil down the barrel if needed. Extractor hooks can break and leave a round in the chamber. Again, make sure the mag is removed. At the local range, I watched a guy lock his slide back, visually check the chamber, drop the slide and pull the trigger. Fortunately, the pistol was pointing down range. Yep. He forgot to drop the mag and there were rounds in it. Not the kind of a surprise anyone likes!

Have fun and be safe.

WyoBob
