5 things....
What are 5 things you've learned about cigars that you wish you'd have known as a newbie, and that would've enhanced your newb experience...
1.) Buy the biggest humidor you can possibly afford. 2.) Purge (blow through the foot) of your cigar every 3 or 4 puffs to freshen the cigar and get rid of any stale smoke, etc. 3.) Let the damn things dry out for a bit before smoking them. (dry boxing) 4.) Pepin, Padilla, Padron...and sometimes Patel (The four Ps) 5.) Buy a Palio, a good lighter, and beads right out of the gate! |
Re: 5 things....
3 more come right to mind.
Small ring gauge on cigars is not a bad thing. Smoke slowly. If a cigar ain't doing it for you, pitch it. Life is too short. |
Re: 5 things....
The better the wrapper the better the cigar.
|
Re: 5 things....
Smoking with friends beats smoking alone.
Pay It Forward |
Re: 5 things....
Don't save smokes for special occasions.
Don't buy based on what you read. |
Re: 5 things....
Always buy Vin's or Dustin's samplers :D

Re: 5 things....
There is going to be another limited/special edition cigar around the corner that you are going to want as much or more than the one you are considering now.
Don't ever promise your wife that you won't be buying any more cigars this month unless you are prepared to buy her a pair of shoes. |
Re: 5 things....
Never post a pic of your new cooler or humidor.
:r |
Re: 5 things....
you dont NEED to buy those cigars just because they are on sale.
|
Re: 5 things....
Always shop around before buying. This includes comparing prices before placing a bid at the Devil site.
Hook a Brother up. There are nearly as many bad expensive cigars as there are bad inexpensive cigars. Quite a few catalog descriptions are blatant lies. As Vin said Support and Honor the troops. |
Re: 5 things....
Maduros are not the devil!!

Re: 5 things....
Snorking
|
Re: 5 things....
- Sample stuff, but find a goto cigar.
- Read what people say about a stogie, but make your own opinion. |
Re: 5 things....
1. Quality over quantity
2. Buy more singles before committing to a box 3. Get involved in more trades and PIF's. It's a good way to try lots of different cigars 4. Small RG doesn't mean less "value" 5. ISOM's !! |
Re: 5 things....
Have something sweet on hand to counter dropping blood-sugar levels from too much nicotine. And that cuban cigars are much less expensive, on the whole, than nc's.

B&M Etiquette:
- Don't smell the cigars - it doesn't tell you anything and it pisses off the employees. - If you smoke there, buy something - Go to learn, not to teach (as a newbie) - Ask what they have "in the back" - Hook the employees up, they will reciprocate :tu |
Re: 5 things....
Doug already said it, but it bears repeating.
Hook a Brother up. Someone much smarter than me once said "Where's the love in loving someone that already loves you? Anyone can do that." Show a brother the Love. Especially one you don't know. That's the way to roll. :tu |
Re: 5 things....
1. bigger isn't necessarily better
2. "mild" isn't a dirty word 3. when it comes to Cuban tobacco, believe the hype 4. you will probably outgrow anything larger than a cooler within the year 5. cigars do not smoke best when stored at 70% humidity I can probably come up with another 5 but those are the ones I really wish I could go back and tell myself as a "newbie" |
Re: 5 things....
This should be the golden rule.
Lower all your credit card limits once you start the hobby :r |
Re: 5 things....
Quality above quantity.
Never...ever... cut a Lusi in half. |

Re: 5 things....
My personal 5- In order of importance to me:
1. Share my thoughts on cigars in the form of reviews. I personally find it helpful when others review cigars I am looking at, so I do the same for other BOTL. 2. Don't fondle cigars in a B&M too much, and NEVER smell them. 3. If you have something a BOTL is looking for, don't be afraid to ship it to em, and let them enjoy it. 4. A good cutter and reliable lighter are a NECESSITY! 5. Anyone that tells you a bic lighter is bad for your cigars is a liar. In my experience, it works fine, in a pinch. Scott |
Re: 5 things....
Great thread.... I think all of the ones I would've mentioned were already said.
1. Humidor....go bigger than you think you need...much bigger. 2. Snorking....or nose exhale. You'll never know your cigar unless you do. 3. Herf often. Wherever, whenever, with whomever. 4. Think about how great it feels to take a break from your everyday life with a cigar. Now think about the troops. Send them some. :usa 5. Share with your fellow BOTL, but sample the cigars you gift before you give them all away. Sometimes you'll miss out on fantastic smokes, sometimes you'll regret passing off crap. |

Re: 5 things....
Echoing a few earlier posts here.
1. Don't be afraid to ask questions. 2. Smoke everything and anything, you never know what you might like. 3. Heartfelt Humidity beads 4. Don't be afraid to spend $30-$50 on a good cutter, it's worth it in the long run. 5. Heavy drinking and heavy cigar smoking never go together.:al |
Re: 5 things....
1. Relax on humidity, was WAY too worried about it to start.
2. A good deal on crappy sticks is a bad deal. 3. When a deal of the century comes along on a certain region of cigars do whatever necessary to procure large quantities and deal with the aftermath later. 4. Small RG, Small RG, Small RG. 5. Don't ever contact Thompsons. They are harder to shake than herpes. |
Re: 5 things....
This thread should be edited for stupid responses.....including mine.

Re: 5 things....
A ton of good info compressed here!
|
Re: 5 things....
1. Always keep an extra cutter/punch and lighter in your car (just in case)
2. Never put a partially smoked cigar back in your humi in hopes of smoking later. (you'll never get the smell out) 3. If someone thinks it's funny to send you infused/flavored cigars...Don't ever put them in your humi with your "good" sticks (They'll elope in no time and you'll never get the smell out). 4. Snorking/Retro-haling/nose exhale, whatever you want to call it, is an absolute must if want to really taste your stogie. 5. Always fill your lighters before going out, herfing, camping...you get the idea. 6. Purging sound's like an awful thing, but with cigars it's always a good thing By the way, great thread idea. :tu |
Re: 5 things....
1) Your pooch makes for an excellent herf buddy.
2) Dont know what to drink with a cigar, grab a coke. 3) Some CC are great, and some NC are great too. Great cigars can come from anywhere. 4) Have patients when buying, deals will come up. 5) Resist the desire to buy the biggest thickest cigars, they are not better. |

On a Sunday morning, a cigar, a cup of coffee and the newspaper, is possibly one of the best ways to start your day.
|
Re: 5 things....
-Take the time it takes to seasoned your humi properly...if not it will take forever to get it stabilised.
-Build inventory of small sticks for winter if you live up north because a churchill size cigar at -30c will never be a good cigar;) Great thread BTW:tu Frenchie |
Re: 5 things....
This is a good thread. One thing I am finding is that I have not yet had a $10+ cigar that has been any better that a few of the $3-5 cigars that I like.
More expensive is not necessarily better, which is probably holding me back from trying some good sticks that gets mentioned. |

Almost forgot...
When Scott Shilala makes beads...BUY SOME OR TRADE FOR SOME!!! They will keep your humi, cooler, or vino rocking steady!! |
Re: 5 things....
1) you dont need a triple flame torch lighter. use matches single flame torch.
2) support you local b+m 3) cigars are a handmade product. Dont judge a cigar after you had just one. Give them a second shot. 4) It doesnt hurt to try a cigar thats new to you. 5) Take your time when you smoke. petit coronas can be 90 min smokes |
