I'm sick of hearing about MJ and the coverage of this is really getting sickening. I can't imagine how much worse it is in California

Who the hell cares?
And why should the taxpayers/city be saddled with the extra costs of the circus?
Let MJs estate, the celebs, and/or the attendees pay for all the police, fire, sanitation costs that the financially strapped city will end up paying for.

Agreed 100%, this is getting old and now they are parading this sicko pedophile around town hoping to throw it on the taxpayers tab. Is there nothing else for people to do?

As long as the funeral doesn't last 3 days like the Late Ronald Reagan. Lets make this quick and get it over with. Mourning will not bring him back. Pay respects and move on remembering the good things. One action does not make a career.

Please tell me LA isn't paying for all this! When my mother died it was $350 for a motorcycle cop, $500 for a cruiser and on an on. I understand the security implications but if his estate isn't footing the bill for at least some of the cost that is complete and utter BS.

I would go if I lived in L.A.

Roundtrip flight to L.A. from Philly = $400
2 night hotel accomodations in L.A. = $460
Replical offical white M.J. glove = $100
To be a part of the world's largest moon walk or Thriller dance = Priceless!!!

This is a great quote from Councilman Dennis Zine:

Quote:

This is not an emergency. This is a memorial service for a celebrity who died a week ago. We are cognizant of AEG's need to honor the memory of Michael Jackson, but they should also be cognizant of the taxpayers' needs.

Considering how some folks in LA react when they're happy (ie: Laker win), I think he smoked something illegal.

Sorry, just saying what I feel about him.

I have two friends I grew up with who were the victims of pedophiles. Both are gone. One was was killed and the other could not live with the abuse and the shame brought upon them and took their own life.

I think it is a disgrace that the media is giving him this love fest usually reserved for popes and presidents because he had a few hit singles in the 80s.

I am glad he is dead and he can rot in hell.

Yeah, probably not. Younger generations don't really know who the guy is or listen to his music. Sure, he'll have his cult-like followers who will say he was the greatest of all time, much like Elvis, but also, much like Elvis, most people won't miss him or his music. :2

Which raises the question: 20 years from now what WILL he be remembered for?

20 years after my death few other than my family and friends will remember me more than once a year. A few teachers, classmates, co-workers, etc may have occasional memories of me but, since I had no power to make big marks on the world, 99.99999% of the world's population will never even know I existed.

But, with the fame and wealth he possessed while alive, what lasting improvements or marks did he leave? Some people will have fond memories of his music, the impact it had on their adolescent years, their first concert, etc. But that group of people is small in comparison with a count of all the humans that were alive during his lifetime or will have lived within two generations of his career's peak.

We all have the power to make small changes for the better in our little corners of the world. He had the opportunity to make large improvements (or at least try) - but what did he do?

At any rate, I hope he passed peacefully and I hope his soul and the rest of the world can go forward peacefully.

Just food for thought. I'll get off my .....

hey, where's that little soapbox icon?!?!?

:D

I have to disagree with you on the younger generation not knowing about his music. Post death, his music is being downloaded like a rash. See http://www.top10songs.com/. M.J. was bigger than just a few hits in the 80s. His dance style, music video breakthroughs and work ethic has impacted many of the modern day pop and r&b entertainers (e.g. Usher and Justin Timberlake just to mention a couple). Much like Elvis... maybe... he did marry into the Elvis family :), but I think that's about as far as the connection goes. At the end of the day, will I miss him? Probably not, other than the occasional freak show escapades. But, I truely believe that his music and his influence on today and tomorrow's music will not be forgoten. :r

You may be right, but I don't spend any time listening to pop or r&b so I don't see his influence spreading throughout the masses of music.

I too am a fan of the freak show he was and hope that he has at last found some peace from his problems, self-inflicted or otherwise.

I'm not a huge fan of Michael Jackson's music and less of a fan of Michael Jackson, the man. However, raging against him in his death does no one any good. My opinion only, but the greater insult you could hurl would be one of apathetic disinterest.

BC-Axeman 07-07-2009 02:06 PM

Re: who's going to the Michael Jackson Memorial?

I grew up with his music, from The Jackson 5 on. There was a cartoon series Sat. mornings. I thought "Thriller" was a great album and the MTV videos rocked. We were the same age. That said, he was already seriously weird at the time of "Thriller" and continued to get stranger. I was creeped out by him. He was a schizophrenic narcissist (separated from reality, in love with himself) and with enough money to get away with whatever he wanted and he got lost in it. He deserves NO honor or worship.
May God have mercy on his soul.

Being a fan of his earlier stuff (Off The Wall) and growing up watching the Jacksons on TV my heart goes out to his family. No man or woman deserves to get "put down" immediately after their death. Michael was definetly different, but so was Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, etc.

But Ronald Reagan was a great ex-president so the ceremony was a little more tolerable...not some junkie pedophile like MJ(but he was a great singer and dancer THAT"S ALL!)

The difference is that Ronald Reagan was a former President. By tradition, law, and general respect for a former Commander in Chief we the people of the United States are obligated to pay for his internment ceremony. We are not however obligated to pay for any other citizen of the United States other than our Veterans or Public Servants killed in the line of duty.

Seems like LA needs to take a lesson from USDA. The USDA is in the business of promoting anything and everything agriculture. But they have a regulation and policy that we will help everyone but if you cost us extra money the bill will be in the mail.

Nothing wrong with that but asking that the taxpayers of the area in which the venue is taking place to pay for it is a bit absurd especially considering the fiscal condition of the state at this time. Think about that.
