USPS price hike

Don't forget that mail prices go up tomorrow (May 11).

First-class stamps are now $.44 from $.42.

Up to 1lb Priority Mail is now $4.95.

Do you still get the discount online through clicknship? I know the package when sent at a post office is $4.95 but online was $4.80 plus free D/C.

It seems like the prices just went up a couple months ago.

This is the first I've heard about it. Thanks for the heads up.

Re: USPS price hike

I find the ridiculous regular hikes to be less and less a concern. I'm doing more and more shipping through UPS and FedEx, and most of my communication for documents is digital. The only regular mailings I send out are contracts to be physically signed.

The Post office is following newspapers and radio - a dying industry as the needs of the world change at a rapid pace.

Re: USPS price hike

I go to the store and buy a Birthday card in Chicago for my friend in Los Angeles. "How much will you charge me to take this card to my friend's house in L.A.", I ask.

"44 cents" is the reply.

Pretty amazing when you think about it in those terms.

Kind of like the people who get mad when their airline flight gets delayed 20 minutes. Do they realize they are getting in tons of steel, and flying through the air at 600 miles per hour? They should be in awe....but instead they are irritated. :r

What's irritating is the rate of change not the amount. http://www.akdart.com/postrate.html

I don't get irritaed at the increase in prices since they are basically set to adjust for inflation... I do get upset that despite the prices increases, USPS is constantly in the red! Down an estimated $2B this year... now that is lame!

Allie said the same thing, but she is an accountant and a quick "cost/benefit analysis" put an end to that, well that and I was too lazy to drive back to the post office to buy them. We need the extra 17 cents ones anyway. :bh

I was when it went over $4, but it's just under $2 here - and that's perfectly normal.

Exactly - when it shot up to $4 it was a very rapid change. I still didn't really mind the actual price of $4 because we drive MINI Coopers getting better than 30MPG and I primarily ride a bike getting over 50MPG.

Price goes up, service goes down............... best to pay online if you feel comfortable doing that.

I only wish I could use the bike year round up here, especially when it gets back over $3 a gallon later this summer.

Re: USPS price hike

in the grand scheme of things, $.44 is not a lot to send a letter or card across the country.

My understanding is that the need for the hikes is because the USPS lost up wards of $2.8Billion last year, and are already $2.3 billion in the hole for 2009.

While the USPS might be a "dying" industry for letters, they are cheaper than FedEx or UPS, and unlike UPS, the packages usually arrive intact. They also deliver packages from Switzerland on Saturdays:D

I usually sent my cousins in Italy Christmas cards this year. They all called to thank me. With text and email, sending cards has been forgotten. However, I cant tell you how appreciative they were at the gesture.

I may get bashed for this. But if 2 cents is making you infuriated or angry maybe you shouldn't be smoking cigars. I'm a college kid and even if I was sending out 1000 envelopes a month that would be an extra 20 dollars I'm sure I could find a way to budget around that.
Just my :2 (pun intended)

Re: USPS price hike

I'm not one to ***** about postal prices, but the cost of Priority Mail above a pound jumped at least a few dollars. Up to 1 lb is $4.95, but anything above a pound adds at least two dollars!

I just priced a 1lb package via Priority Mail from Boston to Chicago at $4.80 online. Same package, at 1 lb 1OZ (just one OUNCE more) increases to $7.19 online.

Prior to the hike on the 11th, I seem to remember ounces adding cents, not dollars after the 1lb limit.

In the grand scheme of things, it's still cheap but ... :fl
