Does anyone know the meaning of "No Soliciting"
So I have two doorbells to my house. The one everyone rings is at the outside gate entrance and directly above it (cant miss it!!!) is a "No Soliciting" sign. So anywhere from 3-5 times a week I get someone trying to sell me something or give me something. Are people that stupid that they still try or don't know what it means? How do you deal with it? I have been an a$$ and I have been polite, I am thinking about handing out cards with the definition on them before they speak. Maybe I should go ahead and get their supervisors name and number and make a complaint. I Shouldn't have to do this if they have a elementary school education, although some say they are trying to go to college or some other BS. I really hate it when they say I seen your sign, but! But what! Obviously your dumb as a rock! Sorry needed to vent and maybe gather of ways to deal with it!

Re: Does anyone know the meaning of "No Soliciting
Dude, It's easy.
Look through the peephole to make sure it ain't friends or family. Then open the door, naked. Works every time. Even better, answer the door naked, with a box of condoms, and ask them if they are interested in coming in since they want to interrupt. They can't file a complaint. You have NO SOLICITING posted in plain sight. |
Re: Does anyone know the meaning of "No Soliciting
Get a neon flashing "Ain't Buyin' Nuthin" sign... They'll understand that! :D

Trust me. I have a good Lawyer. Works the same as "No Trespassing". His secretary married my best friend - no matter how insanely stupid the question might be, she'll ask him for me. No Charge.

My father was cleaning up some trees with a chainsaw when some people came up to him trying to sell him something. He yelled down to them from the ladder, "what the f do you want?" They never came back again.

Re: Does anyone know the meaning of "No Soliciting
as somebody who has sadly worked door to door for a non profit... we are told it doesnt matter what your sign says, we are to ask. We always had a signed paper from the city saying we were allowed to be there and asking for donations. got a new paper everyday. plenty of people hated me, but I still got a ton of donations everyday. I also hate solicitors, but until it stops working, I cant really blame them...

Similar situation is with phone solicitors. I know they are just doing a job but when I say "Thanks but I'm not interested." and they keep yammering ignoring what I've said, courtesy is abandoned and I give them piece of my mind. |
Re: Does anyone know the meaning of "No Soliciting
Back in Seattle we had a problem with Jehovah witness knocking on the door early Saturday morning. I worked graveyard Friday nights, after the third weekend in a row,
I was laying in wait for them. speakers in the window, with IRON Maiden's 666 Number Of The Beast cued up. Never came back. go figure. |

Re: Does anyone know the meaning of "No Soliciting
Actually I do know the meaning. After having been in door-to-door sales for a number of years I decided to find out what 'solicit' meant. It has nothing to do with intruding on an indivdual's privacy.......it means to 'entice'.
I highly recommend changing your sign to having something to do with knocking or ringing the bell. Just tryin' to help. :) |

True. True. Straight and to the point. When people used to ask me if I saw the sign (referring to their NO SOLICITING" sign, I replied - No). Most of the time they had no reply. It's because I knew what soliciting meant and was prepared to inform them of the meaning. Now if they had a sign that said, "DO NOT KNOCK ON MY DOOR or RING MY DOORBELL- IF I AM NOT EXPECTING YOU I WILL NOT COME TO THE DOOR"....I would have obliged and moved on. :D |

Times are tough and people are just trying to make a living. Give them a break. If you really don't want to be bothered by anyone, move out of the city/suburbs and into the country side (just joking, unless you find this advice useful).

There are a bunch of definitions for soliciting, but the one the OP is talking about reffers to door-to-door sales. You said something about enticing which I think would fall under a sale of a product. Therefore, he could technically press charges against someone trying to sell something to him at his home.(if he had a sign posted). Each town/city can zone its own rules for stuff like this so checking your local laws can answer a question fast. |

Same general idea with my front door, if I didn't invite somebody over and the bell rings or somebody knocks, I don't even go look who it is. I've had (uninvited) friends call me before from my front door because they knew I was home but I didn't open the door :ss . |

If you would let everyone know that the next line on your "No Soliciting" sign is "Unless you are a prostitute," it might clear some more things up. :r :fu

Re: Does anyone know the meaning of "No Soliciting
I can see when people walk up to my door and when I'm sure they are trying to sell me something I usually grab my 8 inch chefs knife, answer the door and say I'm busy cutting things. Usually they see the knife and hesitate or take my statement as true and leave. There are some nasty bastages that just won't leave tho and I usually have to close the door on them.

Because I expect people at my door to be rude - she answers the door - yes she bites:

Re: Does anyone know the meaning of "No Soliciting
I've been on both sides. I used to sell long distance phone service for MCI-Worldcom back in the late 90's when I was in college. It was a small town and the only job to be found. Plus the pay was decent, hours were great, and the perks were unlimited. Still a handful of people quit everyday from the abuse people gave us for bothering them. Regularly I would hear "F%&* this I QUIT" and that person would throw their headset and walk out.
I personally hate being bothered by solicitors too. Door to Door is worse IMO. Phone, you can hang up. At your door, it's a little more personal. Plus a few tips since I've worked in the business: If someone calls you to sell something they have to: 1. Say their first name, LAST name, and what company they work for within 15 seconds of you answering. 2. They cannot lie, mislead, or tell you that you've won some prize just to get you to listen to a sales pitch 3. They cannot change your long distance or phone carrier without your explicit permission. If any of these are violated they carry fines from the federal government ranging from $20,000 up to $100,000 per occurance. File an official complaint, companies usually record 50-100% of these calls and log caller/number/timestamp for 100%. They know who called you and when. Write down the info and file a complaint. The person will probably be fired, and if you follow through the company can pay huge. Also, to prevent the calls sign up with the national Do-Not-Call registry. If you still get non-sales calls and don't want to be called, ask each one to put you on THEIR do-not call list. By law they have to send you written verification of such if you ask. They are then not allowed to call you for 10 years, even if the phone number is transferred to a new owner. For fun listening where someone gets even with telemarketers, Google a guy named Tom Mabe. |

Re: Does anyone know the meaning of "No Soliciting
some good points by all for sure...
I first heard tom mabe on the bob and tom show, HILARIOUS. As many rude people as I dealt when in doing non profit donations, that was really the smallest part of my day. Plus there was nothing better than hitting up a random rich guy who donated your entire weeks goal! lastly... being a very avid dog lover, barking dogs never scared me away from a house. they usually made me WANT to talk to the owner so I could see if the dog was friendly enough to pet. then there were the days we would do scavengar hunts.... oh man... 'Hi yes I work for blah blah blah and were going door to door to day to help fight for clean air and water in your city. yada yada yada' then at the very end 'btw, would happen to have an applor or coffee mug I could have for a scavenger hunt i'm doing today?' we had so much fun with those! |
Re: Does anyone know the meaning of "No Soliciting
Being polite I posted a sign, I sometimes work swing shift and do not want to be bothered. As part of the definition of "solicit" it does say entice, therefore I do not want anyone to come to the door and try to "entice" me for a damn thing, hence the "No soliciting sign. If I want to donate, get a magazine/news paper or I require a service, I can look in the yellow pages, Internet or use my phone to do all necessary business! I have three large dogs, two females and a young male. All have rottie/pit bull and at least one other large breed mixed in, I do not want them aggressive. If someone were to get bit on my property even with signs posted then its my fault, according to our wonderful society! I will be posting a no trespassing sign this weekend just above the no soliciting sign, if the "enticers" still want to intrude and play dumb then I will hand them cards which will say: I did not invite you onto my property, I want nothing from you! You are trespassing and have one minute to leave the premise or I will feel threatened and be forced to use pepper spray! Now please leave!!!! I feel that is fair enough, within the guidelines of protecting myself and family to unwanted visitors!!! I will just have to be even more rude than people who do not understand or want to twist the definition of "soliciting" and the word "NO" around! And I have used pepper spray in the past without hesitation

Check your local laws. If you have a sign posted "no soliciting" and they come to your door trying to sell you stuff, you may be able to press charges. |
