For me it's a real issue. We all have a smoking draw resistance preference whether we think about it or not.

When you find a particular cigar type of box that has a very loose draw using the puch is a nice way of "adjusting it down" to closer to your normal resistance preference.

I don't think I even have a punch anymore

I'm a cutter.

But I do have a punch, just in case.

Anyone do the V cut at all? Ever?

I'm a cutter or a pincher (cutting/pinching with my fingernails). Don't remember the last time I used a punch. Not sure if I have one anymore, either.

I've been pinching more since I heard you and Pete Johnson talking about it - had never thought about it before then. It's pretty darn effective!

I'm the same way, very seldom will I smoke bigger than a 50RG, but when I do. I always punch, otherwise it's cut with my trust Palio.

Re: Punch or Cut?

Punch is always on my key ring, so it's usually out of necessity that I punch rather than cut.

I ALWAYS punch the Litto Gomez style chisels, one punch to each side

Re: Punch or Cut?

Cut. I honestly haven't used a punch cut in probably three years or so. I do wish I had one of those badass Boston V-cutters those. They have one at the Davidoff on madison, it reeks of awesome.

I love my Xikar cutter:ss

I haven't used my punch in ages.

Re: Punch or Cut?

Nearly always use my pocket knife. That way I can truly control the size of the opening, thus the draw.

That and I lost all my cutters. LOL

I used to v cut every torpedo (and only torpedoes) I smoked. I know.....weird. :D

Now it's 99% Palio. I'll punch if I smoke a larger RG cigar.......which is very rarely.

Re: Punch or Cut?

For what ever reason I mix it up all the time. Punch at the B+M and use my Palio in the car, V-cut sometimes at the house. I even bite the cap off in a pinch. :tu

Re: Punch or Cut?

Tried a V cut last week and enjoyed it, but untill I buy one I'll be using my Palio or Xicar.

Mugen910 10-14-2008 09:11 PM

Re: Punch or Cut?

Cut if it's a smaller RG but I will use a V-cutter for reg sized cigs if available. :tu

after losing two Palio and a Xikar cutters I bought a cheap punch.

Prefer the cutter!

Re: Punch or Cut?

The first time I started smoking cigars (about 10 years ago for about a year) I was using a punch strictly. When started smoking cigars again (about 2 years ago) I was using only cutters. Now, I've been experimenting with punches to increase some draw resistance.

But, by and large, I'm a cut kinda guy.

Re: Punch or Cut?

Well now feeling like the village/Asylum idiot I have heard the term punch but never really looked at what it meant.

I have always used the Palio cutter but I am in the market for a newer one, mine doesnt seem like it cuts like I want it to.

Open for suggestions/PM's on new cutters/or my Palio.

Now going back to studying cigars,

Jason

Re: Punch or Cut?

I cut 99 % of the time. I have used the V-cut, don;t like the punch (tar buildup) I stick with the cut.

rack04 10-16-2008 08:24 AM

Re: Punch or Cut?

Cut 100% of the time. Actually I've never smoked a cigar that's been punched. Though I comtemplated buying a punch when I was doing alot of flying.

I use that same punch all the time. I rarely straight cut a cigar unless it's a piramide or figurado.

I really like a punch cut but I have found the key is using/finding the right size. Also if you do not have the punch centered on the cap when you cut, it can cause an uneven burn. I realized this after observing a few times that the side the opening was closer to was burning farther down.

BamBam 10-16-2008 08:46 AM

Straight Cut...although I keep a punch for the golf course

Started with a punch, now cut almost everything. A friend of mine usually smokes cigars in his garage, where his favorite cutter is located. Yeah, he uses a coping saw, no joke, a coping saw!! :r:r:r

Re: Punch or Cut?

I went through a punch phase where I'd punch my cigars in a figure 8 (i.e. two punches). Once I learned out to properly cut a cigar I stopped punching and strictly cut using my Xikar. I have a punch on the end of my Prometheus that I usually offer to friends but don't use myself anymore.

Re: Punch or Cut?

I haven't punched since the last time when the concentration about made me sick. I guillotine or rarely v-notch.

Cut 90%
Punch 10%
Smoke 100%:ss

kfish 10-16-2008 12:51 PM

Re: Punch or Cut?

I use both. Depends on what I'm smoking, if it's a decent size rg and not a belicoso I usually use a punch if it's not I cut.

From what I understand the Palio has a lifetime warranty. Go into a b&m that sells Palio and they will swap it out for a new one. if Mark (OpusX at CS) was here, he could provide you with more details (Mark is co-owner of Palio and a good BOLT)

Since getting my Palio, cutting is the only way I go.

Always cut.....

Re: Punch or Cut?

99% of the time its cut with my Palio. The other 1% is a punch.

I like to use a punch on the LFD Chisels. Punch all the way through, it's like a completely different smoke when done that way!

Re: Punch or Cut?

Punch and Cut, I cant stand the V-Cut

Punch resides on the keyring (cheap punch, but I just loved the .44 mag bullet :P), it only gets used (sometimes) for the larger ring sizes.

cheap cutter for everything else (havn't gotten around to getting a palio yet)

I'm using a palio at home or a planned herf. It a cheap punch on the key ring for the cargar.........

I always use a cutter (Palio or Xikar). I do not like using a punch.

100% Palio, but I'm sure there are a hand full of punches in the junk cabinet.

Ragin Cajun 10-30-2008 11:43 AM

Re: Punch or Cut?

For me it would be a punch for robusto/toro shaped cigars, and a cutter for the rest.

jaycarla 10-30-2008 11:48 AM

Re: Punch or Cut?

I am using the punch more and more. Still use the "V" cutter occasionally too.

Probably like tastes, I am sure I will bounce around between the two.
