Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
1 Attachment(s)
Ok...first off thanks to you people for giving me the cigar bug even worse than I previously had...now I had to upgrade my 75ct display humidor to this 600ct I just bought....now I have a cigar oasis in my 75ct that does the job really well but I am uncertain what I need for this 600ct humi....any thoughts? I was looking at the Heartfelt beads but these seem really expensive unless I am missing something...need some advise as I have already broken the bank in a week since joining this place!
This thing is what I bought and for not a lot of money: |
Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
Wow.. that's quite the leap. Way to jump right in!! :wo
Enjoy the freefall! |
Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
my thoughts...you need cigars
|
Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
That is a nice looking humi... congrats. I would go with 2 lbs of 65% beads - preferably Scott's.

Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
Beads are worth it. They tell you how much to buy for different size humis. You need to fill that up soon, SCHIP is coming in but two short weeks!

Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
very nice looking humi. Fill that quickly or others will.

I started with the heartfelt beads, and now use Shilala's beads for everything and swear by them. they WORK. Don't use kitty litter. You WILL regret it one day. Compared to the money you spend on cigars and a nice case, the money for the beads is small... but will save you weeks of headaches in the future. And the beads will pretty much last forever. |
Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
Holy Batman that’s a nice humidor! Congratulations! And yes, hurry and buy as many of your favorites cee-gars before the tax man shows up and kicks all of us in our happy spots.
:ss |
Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
Don't cheap out on the humidification. You spend a ton of money on cigars, don't let questionable humidification ruin them. I use Heartfelt and hardly ever have to worry about them. I'd be using Scott's if I had known about them when buying my humidors, damn newbie...

Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
Man, I don't know what to do! I read on the CA forum that there was no difference between them and the HF beads...ugh.

Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
I can tell you from having both that Shilala beads are rock solid. Like I said earlier I haven't had to add anything to them for around 4 months. On the other hand heartfelt at least in my case it seems to add water every month or so. I ended up getting rid of most of my heartfelt and got Shilala beads. I still use HF in the cooler though.

I fired off an e-mail to him so hopefully soon he will let me know. So what does 2lbs run...rough estimate?

Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
You CANNOT go wrong with Shilala's beads. It is a one time cost, and then they are almost worry free. I haven't had to boost em up but a couple times in almost a year.:tu

Don't scrimp on the humidification. You will regret it if you do. :( |
Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
Scott's beads are amazing. I have them in 2 vino's and they worked so well that I ended up putting them in my Avallo to work with the Acumonitor to keep humidity down during the summer months. It is on of those investments that you will never regret.

Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
I personally vote for a CO or hydra and a pound or two of beads.
well at least until I start selling the crystals in bulk. Then I will recommend those because they do work very very well. |
Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
ok guys i wasnt going to say anything, but i'll go ahead and brace for the flaming
I used kitty litter for roughly 3 months with NO regrets what so ever. my humidity held perfect at 65% and I only had two pounds in there (600ct humi). The only reason I no longer use them is because I moved to a cigar oasis. At the time I was strapped for cash and $16 for 7 lbs of ktty litter was something I was willing to try. I got the 100% oscilla beads unscented. The only reason I have an oasis now is because I snagged a barely used one for half price on another forum. hate if you must, but for 3 months there were no rewatering them, no odor, and a crazy cheap remedy for perfect humidity. I'm not saying they DONT work i'm just saying for three months they DID work. |
Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
That is the same thing that I read.....man...what to do.

Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
Just for the sake of argument, you're going to fill that humi with sticks at a conservative estimate of about $2000.
Invest another $100 for peace of mind and get the beads. Kitty litter may do well in a stable environment in the winter months, but it won't handle the humidity swings you'll see come the summer months. |
Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
alright shililah you gotta pm me back! So confused!

I realize you read 6pack's testemonial on another site. Kitty litter is designed to keep cat pee from stinking up your room and is designed to clump around poop. I realize that 6pack and some other noobs have used them with some success, but they are not designed for that use and will not handle fluctuations and provide a constant proper environment. Spend the $30-$50 or so that you should in a good product that will last forever. :2 |

That you had those great results I do not doubt. However, journey back for a moment with me to science class, and the "scientific method". Simply put, one test, conducted over a limited period of time, in only one part of the country and one specific home environment is not a sufficient body of evidence to draw a scientifically valid conclusion from. I have no doubt that the kitty litter works GREAT When it is exposed to and operated in a specific environment and under specific conditions. (The kind that you most likely lucked out and had present in your house at the time of the experiment). However, I also can say that if the kitty litter were exposed to a more diverse range of changing conditions and seasons, it will NOT do its job year-round. Eric, skim through this thread again and note how many people have chimed their vote for each solution. Cigar smokers, as a whole, are a fairly smart group of guys, and we can be quite clever with some of our solutions :). The kitty litter idea is not a new one, its been around for years and years. If it actually worked well over a long period of time in more than one or two sets of specific conditions, don't you think you would see more people here touting the merits of it? YET you see the exact opposite. Anyone who has been around a while, seen the fads come and go, and has money invested in their cigars, everyone single one of them has told you and will tell you to get beads. ...:hm.... Nobody here is lying or misleading you about their experience, and everyone posts with the best of intentions. However its very difficult to draw a conclusion from any one example or any one person's advice, including my own - if you want the real answer, just look at the numbers. |
Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
Thanks guys for all your advise as I really appreciate it, all of it! I am going to run Scott's beads if he has any left. I pm'd him yesterday afternoon and haven't heard anything yet. Hopefully he isn't out of them. The humi already shipped, I've got 70 cigars on the way, my 75 ct is overfilled, so I gotta get rockin! :tu

How much time to season? I have barely enough room in my current humi but I can make do for sure. It is coming monday and I should have the beads by then as well.

Re: Just bought a 600ct humi and need advice
Also, if anyone is looking for one of these I thought I got a good deal...a place called cigartoyz.com for $150 (plus like $36 shipping)...I will let you all know for sure though how nice or not noce it really is when I get it. Never done business with this joint before.
