What's Your Favorite Cheap Beer?

What's your favorite cheap beer? Mine is Grain Belt, which is a regional lager here in the upper midwest. It actually ranks pretty well on the Beer Advocate website. It typically costs about $8 or so for a 12 pack. It's pretty light in flavor, definitely a hot weather beer. Great for picnics, boating, after yard work, etc.

Grain belt is decent beer, and found a place recently with Hamm's on tap. :dr For home use, it's Coor's Light.

I've heard of Lionshead, never tried it. I love Yuengling, largely because I'm originally from back East and it just reminds me of home.

Rolling Rock is interesting. I don't care for it, largely because that's what we drank in college when we were able to scratch together a couple bucks for a 6 pack. It was a cheap drunk. I guess by bad association I dislike it now. They try to pass that off as a premium beer out here, like $7.99 for a 6 pack. Go figure.

Cheap beer all tastes the same. I can tell a difference if I drink a Miller and a Coors side-by-side, but otherwise they're all the same to me.

I'm embarrassed to say this, but Blue Moon.

It's absolutely nothing in comparison to some of the other belgian whites I drink, lacks body, flavor.. everything, but for 2$ per 20 ounces.... it's something to drink when the $'s aren't rolling in.

Can't eat top ramen every week in college :hn

Re: What's Your Favorite Cheap Beer?

Tonight it's Keystone Light.

This is too funny. I took a couple of bags of garbage down to my workplace today to drop them off at the dumpster. The owner's son had been there before me and filled the sucker up with so much stuff that I just had to check it all out. I dumpster dived like Sanford and came away with an old table, a lamp, some new silicone caulk, new toilet parts, electrical stuff, TOOLS, carpet (beside the dumpster, rolled up), and 5 Keystone Lights (one was a tall can- -the brand is how I know who filled the dumpster). Who would throw beer away? It's not Coors Light (my usual cheap favorite) but I'm enjoying the last one now. I may check it out again in the morning before I clock in to see if I missed any other goodies. :D
You should see the lamp. Rich people are weird.

Re: What's Your Favorite Cheap Beer?

Natural Light of course

In 1975 the Miller brewing company came out with the first light beer, Miller Lite, took the world by storm. Then in 1979 the worlds biggest brewing company A. Busch inc came out with Natural Light, "the beer with the taste for food". They ran neck and neck, neck and neck until 1985, when the ----- in the advertising company thought up Bud Light and Spuds Mckenzie. Now why do I ask you does the worlds largest brewing company need to premium light beers??? It doesn't, but since Natural Light had such a following, they decided to keep it and just lower the price. Natural Light, the Premium Light Beer, with the cheap beer price.

* bottles are also the same price as cans.

Now I can't tell you most of the classes I took in college, but I remember that verbatim. Amazing what the threat of Hazing would do.

Being a recent member of the college ranks, I thoroughly enjoy(ed):
30 packs of 'Stones
Jacob's Best
Busch Light
Old Style
Miller High Life Light
Rolling Rock

I also have been known to keep a few 'Stones around, and drink Busch Light for football games recently. :chr:

Pigs Eye, when it was brewed here in town, Amber being the fave.
Now? Summit, occasionally mixing in a case of Green Death (Special Export), decent body on the Ex, compared to 99% of macros, in my opinion. Others as wild hairs grab me.

Almost never, unless it is pretty much the only cold hopped product in front of me? Bud. Drank more than my share as a kid. Miller Lite. Never had the taste for it, taste buds told me to F off. Bud Light. Same thing. Damn near any light beer, actually, I would rather spend a couple bucks extra for something I can taste. The occasional light i might enjoy is a hot day lawnmower light. I also try to imagine myself as a man lost in the desert drinking fetid water at that point. ;)
Hard to find a beer with actual body on the cheap, is my point, actually...Wait, did I have a point?

Crap, wheres my beer, the back is spasming again.

Nothing wrong with an OCCASIONAL Green Death. Otherwise my digestive tract goes awry.
Now, Summit Extra Pale Ale, can be consumed whenever, wherever and often!

My "yardbeer" is Icehouse.

We drank a ton of Hamm's in college waaaaaaaaaaaay back when. At $4/case, you couldn't beat it. Unfortunately, it's not produced any longer. :(

Unfortunately this is wrong.

The first light beer was made by Joe Owades at the Rheingold brewery in Brooklyn New York in 1967. Rheingold, in a stroke of advertising genius, called the light beer Gablingers Diet beer. As you might surmise, this was not a great market success.

A colleague at Peter Hand brewery (Meisterbrau) in Chicago asked Owades for the forumation for the low calorie beer and he provided it ... back then regional breweries did not compete with one another.

Meisterbrau entered the market with a light beer called Meisterbrau lite around 1969.

Around this time, Miller was purchased by Philip Morris. Phillip Morris wanted to introduce new products into their new brewing company and looked around. They decided to buy the light beer formulation from Meisterbrau in 1971. They reinvented the reinvented beer as Lite beer from Miller around 1975, approximately 8 years after Rheingold had brought the first low calorie beer into the world.

Interestingly, Dr Owades also formulated recipes for Sam Adams Boston Lager, Pete's Wicked, Foggy Bottom and many other craft brew beers. He introduced dry hopping and krausening into American brewing operations. He was truly a visionary and a nice man (met him once in the early 90s), so I am obligated to set the record straight about light beer.
