Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

Well... SlowT's Boswell thread has broached the idea of a CA edition pipe.

If we are serious about this, it'd be good to know who would be genuinely interested, approx. price range, style and maker.

It'd be great to have the Boswells do it, but of course that may not be feasable for them (in a timely manner anyway). So we may want some other options.

So lets start at the beginning, who is interested, and give a rough price range

1. rx2010 ($80-130)

I'm all in on something like this! Especially if Boswells are able to do it.

1. rx2010 ($80-130)
2. JaKaacH ($79-129)
3. Nabinger16 ($81-131) High roller so far!

But I'm happy to see the interest

How about Senatorov? He makes great pipes! Is he on CA yet? I would be interested in a pipe up to $130! I can't go higher then that though.

Will it be the same shape/design for everyone? do you have any idea on design?

Right now I just want to gauge interest in the idea. It would be one shape with different finish options. In all likelihood

Well since I started this mess, its only right I join in. I would like to keep it under 130, but I could probably manage to go a little bit over...:tu

$50-$100 for a 'newbie' model, not that you'd probably go so low.

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I might be down and the price range for me is pretty much covered.

DrDubzz 03-11-2009 07:37 PM

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

so we've got roughly 10 folks down for this (and I'm sure others will show interest later)

so as far as potential makers go, we've had Boswell and Senatorov suggested, and that other fellow, Zeman, who I've not heard of really, but his stuff looks good.

Obviously there are a lot of great artisan makers, but price may become an issue. So if anyone has any larger maker suggestions fire away. I figure Savinelli/Stanwell etc could all be possibilities.

Also, what about shapes? probably nothing too crazy, lets hear your ideas

Nabinger16 03-11-2009 07:45 PM

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

As far as shape goes, I've been looking for a poker lately. I'm cool with any shape though, whatever the masses want.

WWhermit 03-11-2009 07:56 PM

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

Poker sounds good to me too.

Savinelli and Stanwell may be hard to get to do a club pipe. Usually those go to smaller guys, who can take individual order.

I like the idea of Senatorov. I think he'd be up for it and would do a great job within budget.

Jan Zeman does a good job, made 7 club pipes, one for each day of the week, for 7 years. Never heard one bad thing about him, and love his pipe.

Either way, I'm perfectly happy with any of the suggestions thus far!

a good read:

DrDubzz 03-11-2009 09:12 PM

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

that is a good read, I hope everyone will take a minute to read it

This is why I'd like to get a shape or two that everyone likes, run it by a maker or two, and see who can work with us

then once we have an agreement for production, I would like to have everyone paid up ahead of time, so we can lump sum the maker and make his life easier

which would be a good thing. I'd like to approach the maker, say, can you make 12 x "bent apple" (for example) @ $110 each shipped

and maybe have two finish options. where maybe the pipe isn't super ornate, but it's well-made, good looking, and commemorates our first full year as a pipe forum

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I might be interested, depending on the finances when the time comes, a little less or near to $130 sounds decent.

Jan Zeman does some nice work and is willing to come in with a solid pipe near the price range a club is looking for.

I'm going to step out and and say max $130 for a custom pipe is what I would be willing to spend.

So I will start putting some money away, from the odd jobs I've doing.

I really want to be a part of 1st year Asylum Club Pipe.

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I would throw Jurt Huhn into the mix of potential makers. He has a couple lines of pipes that are in or around our price range. It would be hard for most custom carvers to fulfill our requests at our price but if Kurt is willing I think it would be an easy transaction for us to make. His country man line of pipes run from 1000125 dollars. It would also be nice find an American carver for ease and accessibility. Here is his website.

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I would join in for a pipe under $130 (a little lower if possible).
Being from Europe, I would need to know about payment options, but as my wife's parents live in the US I can easily find a way. The pipe would be sent to them and they would then make it come to me. During August I'll be in the US, also.

Zeman and Senatorov seem great. I can go for any type of pipe, except for a full-bent. A poker would be nice.

Poker sounds like a good shape, but I like just about everything. Like a 1/4 bent poker though, that'd be great.

Hopefully we can pull this off somewhere, cause that'd be awesome.

I have not smoked pipes before, but I think a custom made CA pipe, 1st year of CA, first edition, etc. added special aspects would make me get one. Yes, if less then $130, I think I would have to do it.

Ok I don't know what a "poker" looks like, maybe someone can enlighten me.

But I was looking through Zeman web site and these look pretty nice. they are in his club pipe section.

I have his poker called the Fiery Cross, seen here. Wonderful smoker. Although, I'm not partial to smokers for this club pipe thing.

At some point one of us should start to contact these pipemakers to see if they can even fit this into their schedule.

I'm excited, though. Would be nice to have a club pipe.

I think once we get a shape or two as the main choices, I'll start contacting the makers and seeing who can accomodate us

once we have a couple possibilities (or maybe just one depending on responses) we can put it to a final vote

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I´m up for any style, but my preferences would go to:

Poker - Zulu - Egg - Bulldog, in order of preference (a Churchw. would be top of the list, if the price range allows for it - it would make a very stylish club pipe...)
Straight to 1/4 bent are my favorites.

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I would definitely be interested. Under $150 would be about my limit. I am kind of partial to bent pipes like a bent apple, preferably a darker color with a smooth finish I don't mind a rusticated or freehand though they are also cool as long as they smoke well.

I too vote quarter bent poker. I would like to see it rusticated as well. :)

Just a note; a rusticated pipe would keep the cost down, for those of which this would be an issue.

I have both, so I can go either way. With pipes, that is.

I think it would be good to have an option of rusticated or a smooth finish.

I could go for either depending on how they turn out

I'm not quite sure if what I saw was an apple or what, but I like the idea of either a bent or straight stem (if choices are possible), with a nice round bowl. Preferably finished.

Looking at it, I think an apple would be what I mean, also in a dark color.

I'm down for a club pipe. Preferably under a hundred, but can go over.

I like the idea of a quarter bent poker. Partially rusticated with a smooth rim.
