Great Quote
"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."
~~~ The late Dr. Adrian Rogers, 1931 to 2005, Former Pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis , TN ~~~ |
Re: Great Quote
Really good quote, last line hit it home for me. "You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it"
Re: Great Quote
This thread straddles the line of becoming political in nature.
Tread carefully, posters. :2 |
Re: Great Quote
This quote is just a statement of facts.
Re: Great Quote
heres a qoute that goes with the OP
"To take from one, because it is thought that his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare others, who, or whose fathers have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, 'the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry, and the fruits acquired by it.'" -- Thomas Jefferson :usa |
There are no facts in the statement. That being said, he does present a plausible perspective. |
Re: Great Quote
The following quote is not, I believe, overtly political but a statement of the times when said and it is equally true almost 50 years later. "No nation has ever taxed itself into prosperity." President John F. Kennedy when he proposed lowering the maximum tax rates.
If the statement is fact, then there really is no reason or room for discussion. Why else would you post this if not to discuss? And where would you expect the discussion to go if not in a political direction? |
Re: Great Quote
According to dictionary.com:
Fact: Something that actually exists; reality; truth. Opinion: A belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty. -- By definition, I don't believe an opinion can be a fact. I pay $x in taxes = fact. My taxes are too freaking high = opinion. |
But posting a reminder in a public forum (whether fact or opinion) will lead to discussion. And here is a fact. I initially felt this thread was started as a political statement. However, I felt that a reminder to all might keep it from becoming a political discussion and ultimately getting shut down. Proof that no good deed goes unpunished. |
Thanks for sharing the quote Tombstone. |
Re: Great Quote
I don't think an argument of semantics is needed. An opinion can still have some truth to it and not be fact.
But back to the original post, I think it is a really good quote |
Re: Great Quote
It's a true statement Tombstone, just sucks that we do nothing about it but discuss it.
Re: Great Quote
The late Dr. Adrian must have never heard of doubling down.
I win. Go ahead and lock this thing up, Peter. :r |
Just like when my friend who was playing in left fielder for my softball team was jump around all motivated screaming. We all stopped in the middle of the game and look out there at the same time to ask...WTF did you just say? His response was...I have no idea either. :r |
Re: Great Quote
Its a quote and lets leave it at that folks. If you choose to believe it to be fact that's fine. If you have differring opinions that's fine as well. I just hate to see threads closed because folks can't accept others opinions. This is a cigar forum and not a showcase to present a persons side of the aisle. So lets not ok. Read it and move on. If this post offends anyone? You can pm me. I only work four days a week and I have time.
Re: Great Quote
Can I throw this out there for discussion? This info comes from Wikipedia and I have not checked the sources.
Since the late 1960s, Sweden has had the highest tax quota (as percentage of GDP) in the industrialized world, although today the gap has narrowed and Denmark has surpassed Sweden as the most heavily taxed country among developed countries. Sweden has a two step progressive tax scale with a municipal income tax of about 30% and an additional high-income state tax of 20–25% when a salary exceeds roughly 320,000 SEK per year. Sweden has one of the best education systems in the world. The health care is governed by the 21 landsting of Sweden and is mainly funded by taxes, with nominal fees for patients. Me again. This last paragraph indicates that Sweden is lowering taxes. A September 29, 2008 editorial in the Wall St. Journal quoted Jan Björklund, leader of Sweden's Liberal Party, as saying, "The corporate tax is one of the taxes which large companies really study when they plan to set up business somewhere." The editorial goes on to say, "The corporate tax reduction will bring the Swedish rate down to 26.3% from 28%, continuing its fall from a high of 57% in 1987... entrepreneurship had become such an alien concept that more than half of Sweden's 50 largest companies were founded before World War I and only two after 1970—the period when taxes and social welfare programs proliferated... Three years ago Sweden eliminated its inheritance tax." |
Positive vs Normative statements. That will give you the distinction your looking for.
Re: Great Quote
Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don't have that problem.
Ronald Reagan, President of the United States; 1985 The United States Marine Corps, with its fiercely proud tradition of excellence in combat, its hallowed rituals, and its unbending code of honor, is part of the fabric of American myth. Thomas E. Ricks; Making the Corps, 1997 pretty much anything from this site is a fav to me :tu |
