JR Alternatives?
Who has tried any of the JR Alternatives and are they smokeable?
|
Re: JR Alternatives?
Yes and no. Stay away, stay far away!

Re: JR Alternatives?
I had the Cohiba Siglo 4 Alt. It was pretty darn good. For $1.50, it is hard to pass up.

Even some of their sales staff acknowledge the less than stellar make-up of these stogies. |
Re: JR Alternatives?
Some are Dog Rockets, others are wonderful! Cohiba Sig IV and Bolivar Corona (I believe they are the same cigar w/ different packaging) are wonderful. I believe all of the Cuban Alts are Nicaraguan.

Re: JR Alternatives?
I liked the regular alternatives as a good yard 'gar especially for the price. They're not great but the ones i've had didnt taste bad either.
They do have some called JR Edition Limitada alternatives, with a darker maduro wrapper which I thought might be good too. I was so wrong, They were just bad. Luckily, I was able to find a fellow gorilla to take them off my hands. I would give the regular alternatives a try. If you don't like them, you're not out much $$ |

Had a Fuente one and it was so awful. Great cigar if you are looking to give up smoking... |
Re: JR Alternatives?
I would avoid these. So are decent and some are just bad.

Re: JR Alternatives?

Stay away. Far away. blech |
Re: JR Alternatives?

you asked if they are smokeable. Yes. Are they comparable to what they are marketed as? No - that is why they are an ALTERNATIVE! |

I have tried a number of them over the years and all of them have been terrible. From bad construction to bad taste. Keep away.

Re: JR Alternatives?
I've had the Monte #2 alts and while they were smokeable they weren't particularly good. But what can you expect for $2.00? You get a $2 cigar. I'll take them fishing and smoke them for something to do, to give away, or trash, and I don't mind.

Re: JR Alternatives?
The edicion limitada's are decent. Most of the time they turn too crap alittle past halfway. The Rocky Patel Edge Maduros are fairly close. Besides that......Not good.

Re: JR Alternatives?
Bought HdM alts a while back, found them to be harsh and not that good. Left them alone for over a year and well, smoked a few lately and all I can tell you is that they are WAY more enjoyable than CAO Anni Cameroon I smoked last week.

Re: JR Alternatives?
I've got Alt's and Connies in my cooler from as far back as 04.....and I have NO complaints. I'm a cheap bastid, what more can I say??

Re: JR Alternatives?
As with any other cigar lines, you need to pick and choose through Alt selections, but I would advise anyone to let them sleep for a while before making up their minds on these. Not that I buy them on a constant basis, but they are good buys with age on them. I would definitely advise either a Honduran or Nic tobacco mix if buying Alts.

Re: JR Alternatives?
Used to purchase from JR's Alternative collection; IMO, they all tasted the same, just come in different sizes and color wrappers. It's probably been about 10 yrs. since last JR purchase. When it comes to yard gars, tend to stick with low end blends from list of preferred name brand manufacturers. Some supplier's offer name brand 2'nds, which I have found are not too bad.
