The wonderful Cigar
Is there anything else that transcends generations like cigars? Where else but a herf do you run into 20 sumtin to 50 sumtin's sharing a passion together?
Then there are the cigars themselves. Thin ones, fat ones, short ones, long ones, thin short, fat long..etc. The whole varied size thing is so cool and interesting. Add to that the issue of blending.. mild to strong, tart to sweet, etc. On top of that you have leaf from different countries to explore. Hell the cigars themselves are composed of varying quantities of leaf from different parts of different plants, sometimes blended from up to 5 different countries. Then comes the dimension of age. Fresh vs rested vs aged vs vintage. So many aspects that have an affect on the flavor of a cigar. Speaking of which, the environmental factors.. where you are, who you are smoking with.. seem to have a great impact on the enjoyment of a cigar. It's such a neat hobby in that there are so many variables and combinations of things that it doesn't get stale. Making friends and sharing the passion is the best part of it all. Cigars! Enjoyed daily, but a lifetime of sharing, exploration and fun. |
Re: The wonderful Cigar
Good post. I can't agree more. All my life I have had hobbies...but I'm not sure any have captured my interest like cigars.

Re: The wonderful Cigar
I love being able to walk into a cigar shop, light up, and suddenly be able to strike up a conversation with such a diverse group of people.
At one local shop, I have experienced exactly what you are describing, Dave. In the last three weeks I have had some really enjoyable times just sharing a smoke with a couple of college guys... two 30 sumthin ladies... a distinguished black gentleman in his 60's... a Korean business man... a soldier... a guy who was pushing 80... and all around these remarkable little pleasures we call cigars. Cigars forge the bonds of friendship in a most unique way. They have certainly helped me make some extraordinary friendships. You all know who you are! :D |
Re: The wonderful Cigar
Great Post Dave.....Variety is the spice of life! I think that's why a lot of us have more than we will ever smoke.....:tu

Re: The wonderful Cigar
I was at my local B&M before work today (Friday) and we had a nice crew in the lounge ranging in ages from 30 (me) to the oldest who was 69. Always good times when you are smoking with friends or strangers.

Re: The wonderful Cigar
Agree 100% with you Dave.
Went to a B&M here in Madison while I'm home and sat down for a cigar this afternoon. An older gentlemen comes in and we start talking about cigars, scotch and everything else. As were talking I hand him a 99 Hoyo du Depute. As were sitting there he buys a nice bottle of Scotch and we have a glass. I told him about the Asylum and I'm sure we will have another Madison area BOTL stopping by soon. So I got another smoking pal in WI. |

Re: The wonderful Cigar
Completely agree. :tu
Great hobby, with some of the finest people I've ever met. |
Re: The wonderful Cigar
Absolutely true Dave! One of my best smoking buddies was barely legal when we started herfing together (King James), and a few of them have been even older than me. :)
Rumor has it that one of the people I am most looking forward to herfing with is actually older than God. Looking forward to the day, Rick (galaga). ;) :r |

Re: The wonderful Cigar
I love that they are such a social creature. If you have cigars then you have a friend. I was out with buddies last year and forgot to bring a smoke with me. As we were hanging out I noticed a group of five guys smoking so went over and struck up a conversation. Of course they insisted I have a smoke with them. :ss Felt bad for sort of bailing on my buddies but made some new ones at the same time. :)
