After Garfield's released a JDBS and ECPB picks a couple weeks ago, they released an OFBS single barrel yesterday at 134.6 proof. Doesn't have that cherry cough syrup note, so I'm liking it so far.

I totally agree, James, I've had gems and duds. Probably more duds. :gary

Stopped by my B&M, grabbed a Bookers 24-04. Just had a pour. Let’s hope it gets better as it opens up. Got a very medicinal cherry note off it. That’s about it.

I hope it improves for you when it opens up, Bob. I still haven't opened one, this weekend I will. I get that note from some Old Forester Barrel Strength picks, and it's usually not good.

Walked through the liquor section at Mariano's Grocery yesterday. They have a 10 year 7 day Knob Creek single barrel pick, and it was $16 off MSRP.

This one is much less oak forward than a lot of the KC picks I've had. I've been holding onto my older picks like a nun holds on to her chastity, so it's good to have an open bottle on the bar.

Sweet, Hugh, can't wait to let someone else try it! :noon

Opened a Pinhook single barrel chosen by Jay West. It's the most "in your face" Pinhook I've had. Jury is still out, I need another try.

Absolutely, Greg. It's a Beam product that has more punch than the Basil Hayden but not the strength of Booker's. I actually liked Baker's better when it was small batch, but the single barrel is a solid pour. Hope you enjoy.

I like Bakers too. I liken it Bookers light, basically what Tom said.

Thirded for Baker's. I grab a bottle on base every couple of months. Bookers Light is an apt description.

For Christmas Steph got me an OF set, with the 1897, 1910, and 1920. I've had them before and really enjoy the 1897 and 1920. She also grabbed a Rabbit Hole gift set. I knew nothing about them until I got it. I had some of the High Rye Double Malt last night and it's quite good. I got some Scotches, too, but that's for another thread... :D

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

I've had a couple of those Rabbit Hole blends, James, pretty interesting.

Binny's called me up. Weller 107 single barrel pick. About half the cost of regular 107 on secondary. Yes please.

Opened up the latest Booker's (24-04, Jimmy's). Pretty hot right out of the gate, seems pretty middle of the road for Booker's at best. I recommend the 24-03 if you see it.

I just poured a beer, so I lasted 16 hours into 2025...well, not counting the bourbon I finished at 1230 in the morning. :D

Got tha call from my B&M, I was next up on their list to grab one of the HTF bottles. I think I was like 15-18 on the list. The few BTAC they had gotten were gone. There were some really nice bottles though, but at close to secondary prices. Just couldn’t swing those prices. So I got one of the two I’ve been wanting.

Nice pickup Bob! I've gotten my hands on a few Stagg's but never at retail from a store, that's a definite win

Last March I did an ECBP bracket to determine which was the best batch, this year we're doing Stagg (jr), batches 11 - 24C. It's gonna be a fun month :dr

Nice pickup, Bob, though it kind of sucks that your B&M has a list, but then charges secondary? Enjoy that Stagg, though, that's great stuff.

Ben, looking forward to the results of your Stagg tasting. Remind me of your top few in the ECBP battle please.

Yea, I was kinda chaffed when I saw the prices. I’m ok with a little markup, but some of the rarer bottles were up there. I paid $150 for this bottle. Overpriced, sure. But the cheapest I’ve seen it and was in my budget and on my hit list.

Tried it last night. Well worth it.

My personal top 3 were C919 B519 and A120, the group as a whole preferred A119 C919 then A120

Glad it's worth the price, Bob! I love me some Stagg.

Thanks Ben!

I had B520 and C919 as my faves. I've never had A120, looks like I will be "hunting". ;)

stearns 01-09-2025 09:27 AM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

B520 was an interesting one, we did a poll before asking what everybody thought the best would be and B520 was up there with what people remembered as their favorites, but after trying it blind it ranked 13 out of 16. Sweet oak but not as much complexity as the others. The brackets were randomized so nobody had it facing the same matchup as anybody else and everybody still thought it was in the bottom

Stopped by my local store to see if anything was left after their raffle. Wanted the Weller 107, but there’s still two people who need to pick their bottles. There’s only the one 107, so that wasn’t available yet. But…

Watching The Mash and Drum review the new ECBP A125. Interesting. 10yr, 7mos, 118 proof. Tom, you might really like this. Says it gives him a Bookers vibe.

I try to give each ECBP batch a try, and this one sounds intriguing even without the Booker's nod, Bob.

The proof will be in the taste though, the C923 was 13 years + and 133 proof, but I thought it was way overhyped. Selling for $150+, after having one bottle at retail I passed on any more.

stearns 01-15-2025 11:25 AM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

I haven't tried the last few, I do love ECBP but really wish I had a nice tasting bar where I could give releases like those a try first. Too many ~$100 bottles coming out makes me not want to buy any of them

Had a friend looking to rehome an old bottle of Kentucky Owl Rye, which I've had my eye on for a while. Yadda yadda yadda I made it two whole weeks into the year without buying any whiskey :r

Chainsaw13 01-15-2025 03:40 PM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

I get that Ben. I think the last ECBP I grabbed was A124. And you made it longer than I did with buying.

icehog3 01-16-2025 07:35 AM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Agreed, Ben, and not just for ECBP but for lots of releases. We have a liquor store with a bar kind of like that, it's saved me a few bucks more than once. ;)

Before COVID, Party Source had a "tasting library". Most anything they had an open bottle of, you could get a splash. Never brought back the concept, that was a combination of stupid, short sighted, and greedy.
