And now, down the stretch, I'm seeing the team playing unfocused in certain games, and their defense taking most nights off. Just please don't use the "hurt/injured player(s)" excuse... it's late in the season, and everybody's banged-up and trying to get healthy. While I always want to see good, competitive play through til the end, I just hope this isn't another early-out season (1st or 2nd round). And no, I'm not freakin' out.... just a bit concerned...

You and I both. Sharks have been playing flat for the past 2-3 months now. I think they have played maybe 2 good games, the rest have sucked. Yeah, they got injuries, and some major ones, but come one. Injuries means you can loose, not play like crap. I think for the sharks a lot has to do with the fact that they have clinched, but there is still the whole conference to go for. Saddening.

"DOUBLE WTF"... Gainey fires Carbonneau, takes helm as interim coach??...WOW!!... I mean, we all knew that he was kinda on the hotseat, with Habs fans and the press mounting a small revolt. Still, I thought the dude was safe for now, with a possible move made off-season (depending upon.._). Bummer.

Yeah Tom, but as you well know... they're setting themselves up for a lotta nice runs, and for a number of years!!! Man, I'd absolutely love another great Wings-Hawks rivalry!! :tu

I am hoping the Hawks are good enough to give the Wings a run sometime soon! :r

Just wait till the playoffs for Campbell... That guy flat out disappeared for the sharks last season. Didn't think he was worth that amount of money either. Anybody think the blues may find a way to sneak their way in?

Campbell has been playing like crap lately. :2

A gifted "puck mover" and powerplay QB, but a defensive liability...not worth what the Hawks paid, though I hope he proves me wrong come playoff time.

The Blues? They can set their tee-times for April 13th. ;)

How about a little love for the Hurricanes...

Look like a great sleeper from the East. They are 8-2 over their last ten games, including big wins over Calgary and the Rangers... not to mention, the total beatdown they put on Tampa Bay the other night. Erik Staal had 4 goals!

Eric Cole has been a real spark plug since the trade. Watch this team... they went from 9th in the East to 6th (closely contested part of the East standings right now). I feel real good about their chances. :tu

Williams was a popular player with Carolina... but the injuries were too much. :(

For his sake, I hope he is able to get healthy. He will contribute if he can get past that hurdle.

Yeah, Williams was great for a couple years - especially during the Cup run. It would be nice to think that he will get better and get back to his old self, but if the Kings track record (see Cloutier, Dan, et al) then the chances are slim.

Interestingly, the Kings have won all three games since booting O'Sullivan. Purcell has more than taken over for him. But the Kings just can't seem to figure out if they are good or not. They are so streaky - 4 road wins then 4 home losses, then 4 road losses then 3 home wins. If they do squeak in then they will get the privilege of playing either Detroit or San Jose. Good luck with that!

When do the real games start?

J/K, although that's how half of Metro Detroit feels from Nov thru March. But, high expectations are a good thing.

Re: NHL '08- '09 Thread

I think there are a couple teams in the west that are almost there, but not quite. The pacific division could get very interesting in the next couple of years if the Kings and Coyotes are able to add a few key players here and there in the off season.

I don't think the blues will make it, but I think I would take great satisfaction in that. They aren't TOO far behind, though I think they will come up about 4-6 points short.

Hurricanes in Chicago tomorrow, Joe! Carolina is playing some great hockey the past few weeks, and the Hawks are not. I am not optomistic about the game, but hoping for the best (for the Indian Heads). Be sweet if Ladd could dent the scoresheet. ;)

Yeah... I was thinking that about Ladd, too. 'Canes have been hot, but they have won 4 in a row... have not won 5 in a row all year. Could be the Hawks night! (I hope not... ;) )

Should be fun! :tu

Red Wings really need to step it up in there own zone. Two weeks and 2 games of 8 goals. Not what you need when you are trying to get ready for the playoffs. I don't know who they start in goal if the playoffs started today. Both Ozzy and Conklin have been shaky. Someone has to step up.

Congrats to the Hawks... and it was a good game. At least the Hurricanes got a "kiss your sister" point for taking it to OT. :r

Those great young Chicago players made a true number one goalie look like a sieve in the shootout! You have a lot of great hockey to look forward to with that crew if they stay together. :tu

You two wanted a good Hawks/Canes game and you sure got one. As much as I hate to admit it, the Hawks are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future. If they stay together, as Joe mentioned. :tu

Some unreal goaltending on both ends, Joe...and then neither goalie can stop a beachball in the shoot-out!

Kane, Toews, Keith, Versteeg, Seabrook, Ladd, Havlat, Bolland, Barker...the young talent on the Hawks is awesome...they better win the Cup by 2010 though, no way they will be able to afford all those guys in '10-'11 when Toews, Kane and Keith get new contracts!

Great game....I hope the 'canes make the playoffs, the line of Staal, Cole and Rutuu looks like a force to be reckoned with, and Ward sure is a stellar goalie. :tu

You're absolutely right, Tom... definitely a young team to be reckoned with. And as I keep telling you, it's something that's not lost or taken lightly by Wings fans.
As far as the contract year goes... with TWO Bowmans in the front office, I'm sure you'll guy's will be better than okay!!!:tu (gotta love Scotty!!)
Big game for the Wings tonight with Calgary in town. Can somebody say "Playoff Atmosphere"??!!!!

I am gonna TiVo the Wings/Flames game, John, should be a doozy...I will be rooting for Pavel, Henrik, Nik and the boys.

Scotty Bowman is the Man....hope he can keep helping the Hawks close the gap on the Wings....been a long time since we could hang with the best in the West.

Agreed... :tg But what a game (i think?)!! You know, a lot of people in the D have been kind of dismissing (or dissing) Calgary, and focusing more on San Jose. Even though I wasn't part of that crew, and nervously applauded the Flame's moves on deadline day... I'm still scrathing my head a bit after what I saw tonight. Joe, I couldn't agree with you more. It's the hardest trophy to win in all of sports. Period. Anything can happen in the early rounds, and NOBODY can ever be totally counted out. I've loved the Wings, Bruins (lots of family there), and Canadiens (old school) since I was a little kid. I don't know if Detroit and/or Boston/Montreal will reach, but as long as we have good, tough, competitive hockey (along with fairness & consistency from the refs) the whole way through, I'll be happy... although the "ref-part" might be a stretch!!! :bh

Talk about a busy day in the NHL, so much for Sunday being the "Day of rest". :r

My Blues gained another two points, beating the 'Wild'.

Detroit did us (Blues fans) a favor in beating the Blue Jackets. :tu

Rangers 4-1 vs the Flyers
Islanders 4-2 vs the Hawks (My condolences, Tom) ;)
Penguins 6-4 vs the Bruins

I watched the Rangers/Flyers game for lunch and for super enjoyed the Blues/Wild game. A good day of Hockey. Now time for my second :ss.
