That'll be the end of the Culture Series by Iain Banks. I'll be a sad panda.

On Prime Day I bought Kindle Unlimited, so I'll be rooting through all that stuff to find nuggets for the next year. I hope it was worthwhile, it looks like it is.

Not really reading but listening to Pirate Hunters: Treasure, Obsession, and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship. Loving it!

Re: What are you reading?

I bet I'd like Pirate Hunters, Steve. :tu

I finished Hydrogen Sonata, read a few shorts by Hugh Howey, Beacon 23, I believe.
Now I'm reading Death World by BV Larson. It's another sci-fi series that I've enjoyed.
It's not the greatest, but it's an easy read. Larson's vocabulary is about a 2 compared to Banks, if that.
He does write a nice picture, but the series is getting a bit soap-opery with this book.
I hope it straightens out shortly. :tu

I don't get much time these days to read, so I have really been tearing up the audio books. I think this was one of the best books I've read/listened to in quite a while.

Re: What are you reading?

Just finished "Catching Fire: How Cooking made us Human" by Richard Wrangham.

The book presents the theory that it was cooking, more than speech or tool making, that accounts for the transition from homo habilus and erectus to human. As a corollary it makes hash of the current paleo or raw diet claims and cites evidence that our bodies have in fact evolved in specific ways to reap the benefits of a cooked diet. Generously footnoted if you"re academically minded and a pleasurable read even if you're not. A great book for anyone interested in evolution or anthropolgy.

I read Battle Cruiser and I'm working on Rebellion, both by BV Larson.
I have a mess of books to catch up on this series, so I'll be busy awhile.

"Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho's House" written by Steve Stoliar.
He was a student at UCLA and he finagled himself a job as Groucho Marx's secretary. This was near the end of Groucho's life, so most of the anecdotes are bittersweet.

Here is one of my favorites: A newspaper reporter interviewed Groucho on Groucho's 85th birthday. He asked Groucho, "How does 85 feel?" Groucho replied, "69 felt better!"

The First Commandment by Brad Thor. This is the sixth Scot Harvath novel, I believe. Kinda flying through these books. Great suspense novels.

The most recent in the series is Code of Conduct and it on the NYT Best Sellers list, I believe.

Welcome to Cigar Asylum.

Most new members start a thread in the New Inmate forum introducing themselves and telling a bit about their cigar interests and/or journey. I encourage you to do the same.

Re: What are you reading?

So, I went back to #1 in the Star Force Series.
I read all 12 of them. All good, except maybe 9. It was a bit slow.
For wasting space's sake...
Swarm
Extinction
Rebellion
Conquest
Army of One
Battle Station
Empire
Annihilation
Storm Assault
The Dead Sun
Outcast
Exhile
Demon Star.
And thus ends the series.

I just started Assault Troopers, Extinction Wars Book 1.
New author, I forget his name. So far, not bad.

Take your time, the third book isn't out yet. So along with ASOIAF that makes two series I'm waiting on books for. :D

Couldn't get into 11/22/63 ( I liked it, but i'm a slow reader unless it's autobiographies, biographies or true crime)

So, I just started

I finally finished all 7 volumes of Proust, much to the gratification of Scott I am sure. :D

So now I've begun lighter fare, from an author more akin to Scott's liking . . . The Rat, by Nobel-winning former Nazi Gunther Grass. :r

I really liked the book -- and they did a good job adapting the book to the screen. I saw the movie yesterday and it is pretty good.
