I hate USAJobs, they make it so confusing sometimes. The problem I have found is they want you to have experience at a GS 5 level. The problem is that I only have 3 months at a GS 5 from when I was a seasonal park ranger at Gettysburg.

Re: What do you do for work?

My understanding is that you have to show that you have experience that matches that level. I'm a late-career government employee (just turned 40 with only 1 year as a fed at the FAA) and I just had to show comparable experience (mine was as a contractor) at the appropriate level. My situation was unique in that I had almost 20 years experience on my resume when I applied and got picked up as a fed.

You can look at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) site for detailed descriptions of the positions and what the responsibilities/expectations are.

Getty, pitman is right. go to usajobs search the areas your interested in working. If you have any questions, please feel free to pm me or email or whatever. I can elp you with KSA's (which I hate) if need be. Also, apply for whatever you want, let them tell you no rather than saying you only have xxx experience. Trust me on that. Also, be paitient as like anything with the GOV (unless you owe money) they move pretty damn slow. Again, fell free to ask anything

A college degree will typically get you a GS-7 if your grades were good, GS-5 should be easy. Are you still near the Gettysburg area? There may not be much up that way, but if you're willing to move east a bit there are always hundreds of postings for Ft Dietrick, Aberdeen Proving Grounds (my home), and the DC metro area.

Job fairs are great places to make contacts. Check out the nearby schools and see if the government is recruiting there, you usually don't need to be a student. I graduated from VT, but I ultimately got hired from a contact I met at UMD. Those sorts of personal contacts will mean more than a random resume online.

Thanks, KSAs suck. I know how slow the gov can be. I tried to become a secret service agent, got all the way to the polygraph (2nd to last step) and after that got a letter saying there were more qualified applicants. Whole process took 6 months.

I'm on my third career.
1st career was serving in the U.S. Coast Guard for 21 years. Retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer.

2nd career was for 10 years as the managing editor for a monthly hunting and fishing magazine owned by a small printing company.

Currently I am a sole proprietor LLC specializing in designing print advertising for grocery stores. (You know, those sales papers you get in the newspaper telling you who has Ribeye steaks on sale for $5.99 lb.)

I have no shame in being a janitor. :ss

As for the indoctrination ... I don't discuss politics with students since I don't teach political science, nor do I have an agenda.

I think outsiders would be surprised at how conservative faculty are in colleges of agriculture, where many were raised on farms or in small towns, compared to the liberal arts "I teach poetry" types.

I'll be honest. I don't think being a Janitor would be that bad of a job. Hell, I'd do it. You clean and don't have to help customers or anything, just work and do your thing.
