Did you format the card while it was in the camera before shooting?

Oh, nevermind, I scanned the thread:

Amazing shots, man!

Thanks Dan! For the insect shots, I also use a full set of Kenko Extention Tubes to get roughly 2:1 Magnification (2:1 = 2x actual size). The lens alone will only do 1:1. I just used the lens without tubes, and not at 1:1 for the cigar shots. Might have to try that though, tubes and all on a cigar.

I've used a couple of mine for a wallpaper as well. Speaking of, if anybody see's anything of mine they wish to use as a wallpaper, just let me know. I'll get you the full size image or a size suitable for your desktop resolution. I run my res at 1680x1050 and they look good on my monitor.

Chris. 12-22-2009 10:49 AM

Re: Cigar Photography

I actually prefer the size that photobucket shrinks to for my monitor with 1440X900 resolution. I don't like it when the picture takes the entire desktop. It makes it hard for me to see the picture and the shortcut icons.

actually, I have a gurkha pic for you. My local B&M claims to have the most Gurkha of any retailer in the state. This entire section is dedicated to them. There are more that I couldn't fit in the pic.

One of my new year's resolutions is to learn how to use my canon rebel more effectively.

Build a lightbox today and started to snap some pics of some of my cigars. Here are the results.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Just want to learn how to snap better pictures.

Your white balance is off. Double check that it matches your lighting setup. It also looks like several of your pics are out of focus. Make sure your lens can take macro shots that close. The rebel should make a beep sound once the image is in focus.

EDIT: as the slideshow progressed, it looks like you got the focus problem solved. Just gotta work on that WB.

maverickdrinker 12-25-2009 07:35 PM

Re: Cigar Photography

Thanks Chris. Can you tell me how to check my white balance? I am really new at this.

Thanks for your suggestions. The rebel did beep when it was in focus. Starting to get the hang of this.

Chris. 12-25-2009 07:50 PM

Re: Cigar Photography

You have the rebel XT or XTi? There is a dedicated button for WB at the bottom of the directions buttons next to the screen on the XT and XTi. It looks like it's a round button just above the directional buttons on the XSi...

Your goal is to get the picture to look how you see it and the whites to be true white. If you are using fluorescent light, set it to the long bulb, etc...

EDIT: Something just hit me. What mode are you shooting in? Please don't tell me auto. lol! I can't remember if you can make adjustments to wb and ISO and all that in auto on a dslr. I haven't had one in about a year. You should really try your hand at shooting in manual mode. It's the only way to take full advantage of having a nice DSLR IMO. It just takes practice learning what settings to use for shutter speed, ISO, Aperature, WB, AF, and all the other cool settings.

strider 12-25-2009 08:07 PM

Re: Cigar Photography

For this type of shooting I think Aperture priority is just as good as manual. Just imho.
