Are all the Wellers wheated, Ben? If so, I've had the SR, Antique 107 and Full Proof. Also had Maker's several times the last year and a half, but only because it's the only thing my friend Jim has at the house. :r

Had a pour of woodford reserve rye last night, not my favorite, I've been hit or miss on rye lately. I almost picked up a knob creek rye store pick on my way home but managed to hold off, trying to stick to bourbon for the time being until I can amass a better selection of open bottles :al

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Yeah, Woodford seems kind of "safe" to me if that makes any sense. The Knob Creek Cask Strength is purty good though if you can find it.

Glad I have a second Colonel waiting....

Had pours from a couple opened bottles last night, Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare, both tasty. After that I had a glass from my most recent barrel aged old fashioned (made with Elijah Craig), delicious but so very sweet by comparison, been drinking neat bourbon almost exclusively for the last week or two and it caught me off guard. That being said I'm looking forward to pouring another of those tonight :al

Has anybody tried Maker's Mark RC6? I've heard good things, saw it at a shop the other day and am worried it's going to sell out soon. I've made it 9 days so far without buying anything, I consider that pretty good :tu

Here's a review of the Maker's RC6. I'm probably not going to look for it, but the review may appeal to others.

Thanks, I use that site a lot for reviews and their release calendar. I think I'm going to pass as well, there are a few other things that interest me a little more, but if I see it out at a bar I'll give it a taste :tu

Stopped on my way home to buy a bottle of BT, as I was checking out I saw a single bottle of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof up behind the counter, I'm too weak to say no to that. Looking forward to cracking 122.2 proofs of goodness :al

Also started my infinity bottle last night, Sarah got me a really nice decanter for Christmas and I finally decided what I wanted to start with. Poured in 8oz each of BT store picks from my two favorite liquor stores, one definitely tasted sweeter than the other so I think that blend should give a good base until I figure out what I want to put in next. My rule is as soon as it gets down to 25% full I add more or whatever seems like it would help the blend, the goal is for it to never run out and remain a mix of everything that was put it in it before, should be fun :D

I put two ounces of good or better bottles in my infinity. I'm waiting until it's full (34 oz capacity) before I'll taste it, and then I'll add some of the stuff that's dwindling.

Eagle Rare 90
Westward Single Malt 100
Bulleit Rye 90
High West Double Rye 92
SA Contradiction 92
Bulleit Barrel Strength 125
Four Roses Sng Barrel 100
Colonel Taylor BiB 100
Blanton’s 93
EC BP A119 135
Knob Creek Cask 120

That's the one!

Nice looking list you've got there. For now I'm keeping mine to larger amounts of fewer types but that may change in the future. My only hard rule is true bourbon only, I've seen some that mix all different types of whiskey but that seems like it would be easy to muddy things up quick

You're gonna love that ECBP. :dr

I understand with the Infinity bottle, I just went a different direction and am mixing bourbons and ryes. My only caveat will be no finished bourbons or ryes. And no more wire hangers, Mommy, ever.

Went to a cigar bar yesterday and figured I'd re-try a few of the staples that I haven't had in a while, Knob Creek Basil Hayden and Makers Mark 46. I don't know if I've every actually had the 46 before but I really enjoyed it, the KC was nothing too special but the Basil Hayden happened to mix perfectly with an HU Connie 1 I was smoking, that pairing won the afternoon :ss

I was a bit surprised about the 46 as well, I'm heavily leaning towards wheaters recently so I guess I should have expected I would like it. Not super complex by any means but I could easily drink a few drams of that every day :al

Thanks for the thoughts on the 46. :tu

Really like the New Riff Bib bourbon, Ben. While I like the SiB Rye, it's not as spicy as I had hoped. I'm inclined to try the regular rye next. But all in all, great bourbons for the price.

Hmmm....I'm not very good at describing and picking out notes yet. Initial aroma is brown sugar/maple syrup with an undertone I can't quite make out. This is going to sound really strange, but it reminds me of the way my Great Aunt's house used to smell.
It's only 93 proof but packs a little more heat than the other bourbons I've had so far. Flavors......I don't know.....it just tastes like whiskey lol, but I like it. Told you I'm not good at this haha.

stearns 01-14-2020 07:42 AM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Sounds like a review I would write... tastes like whiskey but good whiskey

I'm weak and stopped by my shop on the way home yesterday to get their bottle of RC6, haven't cracked it yet but I'm sure I will soon. They did have a bottle of Old Forester 1910 that I was very tempted on, but managed to say no.

Got home and had a pour of 1792 Full Proof, opened that one the other night. When I tried it the first time I thought it was too hot and ethanoly to be able to drink neat (125 proof), yesterday it seemed to be a bit more mellow. Still on the hot side but the aroma seemed improved and small sips didn't ruin the pallet. Towards the end I did put a few drops of water in which helped take away the numb tongue feeling but didn't do too much for the flavor. Not my favorite, I don't know if it's because I usually drink lower proof stuff (around 100 seems to be my sweet spot currently) but it struck me as just alright. Maybe I'll have another pour tonight over an ice cube or two to see if that helps bring anything out

Grabbed a Larceny store pick on Saturday, cracked it last night and it tasted like straight up pistachios and peanuts. I've heard about nutty profiles but not often from Heaven Hill, unique to say the least. It wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't to the level of being off putting. I'll give it another shot tonight or tomorrow to make sure nothing else was influencing what I was getting, after that it may take a seat on the shelf to break out as a change of pace pour

icehog3 01-20-2020 09:22 AM

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

I'd seen some other guys touting Larceny on another board (though not a store pick). Glad I read your thoughts, Ben, I am a little less intrigued now. :D

I'm still gonna give Larceny's regular release a try, heard good things about it, maybe this pick was done specifically because of the unique profile. To some I'm sure the profile is sought after, to me it's just interesting

I have been sampling a whole lot of different bourbons since my move to Texas in Oct. I and 3 other fellas knocked off a bottle of Balviens Doublewood...excellent! We are currently working on a bottle of four roses which is really nice. Sweet aroma, not too much of an alcohol burn, real pleasant.
I was introduced to Wellers (not the 12 year) it's a good inexpensive drink. Like it a lot. :tu
