Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I´m up for any style, but my preferences would go to:

Poker - Zulu - Egg - Bulldog, in order of preference (a Churchw. would be top of the list, if the price range allows for it - it would make a very stylish club pipe...)
Straight to 1/4 bent are my favorites.

I would definitely be interested. Under $150 would be about my limit. I am kind of partial to bent pipes like a bent apple, preferably a darker color with a smooth finish I don't mind a rusticated or freehand though they are also cool as long as they smoke well.

At some point one of us should start to contact these pipemakers to see if they can even fit this into their schedule.

I'm excited, though. Would be nice to have a club pipe.

That's a beautiful poker.

I too vote quarter bent poker. I would like to see it rusticated as well. :)

Just a note; a rusticated pipe would keep the cost down, for those of which this would be an issue.

I have both, so I can go either way. With pipes, that is.

I don't own any rusticated pipes... Sounds like a good time to add one to the collection.

Am I easy or what? :D

I think it would be good to have an option of rusticated or a smooth finish.

I could go for either depending on how they turn out

I'm not quite sure if what I saw was an apple or what, but I like the idea of either a bent or straight stem (if choices are possible), with a nice round bowl. Preferably finished.

Looking at it, I think an apple would be what I mean, also in a dark color.

I'm down for a club pipe. Preferably under a hundred, but can go over.

I like the idea of a quarter bent poker. Partially rusticated with a smooth rim.

I would like to get in on a club pipe, just as long as the price is less than $130. I would prefer to have a rusticated pipe with some kind of bend.

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I am not interested in any pipe group buys anymore, but I do have a few pieces of advice for you guys.

First, make sure that the carver that you choose has done group pipes before. Dealing with someone that has never done it before or has little experience dealing with a group's expectations is very frustrating. Especially if the pipes don't meet the group's expectations in quality or appearance once completed.

Next, if you are going to pick a shape before an artisan, make sure that the artisan is comfortable with the shape that you picked and has made it before. It is probably safer to choose the maker and then pick a shape that they make pretty often with possibly some tweaks. It may not be as special or unique, but everyone ends up happy with the quality, appearance and construction.

Lastly, picking a new or up and coming pipe maker can seem attractive due to price or other considerations, but going with one of the more established pipe makers is always a better choice. Even if they may be a bit more expensive, it is worth it to know you are going to get a quality product and if you aren't happy they will make it right. A couple good ones that I can think of off the top of my head would be Tinsky and Boswell.

Good luck to you guys.

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

thanks for the advice Sawyer

I would like to have Tinsky do it, but I doubt he could fit our budget. Boswell is probably the best candidate for price, but they are overwhelmed at the moment, so I don't know how soon they could be done.

I'll probably start sending out some emails next week to see who would even be interested, and figure out a shape and all that from there.

judging from this thread, I think I'll first ask about 1/4 bent poker, then maybe a bent apple.

If whoever picks us up can't/won't/doesn't like doing pokers, would you guys prefer an apple, lovat, or maybe even a dublin

let me know, I think the first round of emails will be to: Boswell, Senatorov, and Kirk Bosi (did the club pipe for IPC last year with great results)

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I'd still prefer the finished apple in a dark, RX.

But, an unfinished Lovat does look nice as I now look at them, not knowing what they were.

Good luck to you, and thanks for doing this! :)

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I want to be a pain; my updated choices are below.

1. rx2010 ($80-130)
2. JaKaacH ($79-129)
3. Nabinger16 ($81-131)
4. sixpacksunday ($79.50-130.50) pinching pennies!
5. Yellowgoat (up to 130)
6. Savvy (up to 130+)
7. KZM007 ($50 - $130)
8. WWhermit ($50-$150)

I like the idea of a bent or straight finished apple pipe.

I also found some interest in an unfinished/rustic Lovat pipe.

Lastly, as Requiem stated, a churchwarden would give CA a classy sort of appeal for a first pipe, and I really like Zeman's Lord of the Pipe as well as his corkscrew stem on the Fiery Cross model.

Sorry to be such a bother; the more I look, the more I like. No more choices lol.

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

looks like we've got 16 or so that would be interested.

I forgot about Zeman, I will include him in the first round of emails

:D Price ranges are fine with me. More of a bent apple kinda guy here - with a really big bowl.

maybe its time to add a poll or two?

i would prefer a bent apple myself as well, but have no problems with what the majority agrees to.
