Ya know I just unsubbed from AO and EvE (let the month run out but they're both boring me senseless) and poked my head over to WoW to re-up for a month, and it gave me the option to take a free week. I clicked, so I could laugh at them, thinking it was "we'll give you a free week if you re-up for a year." But it turns out it was an honest to goodness plain old "no credit card required" free week.

That ought to be enough time to get sick of it again ;)

I can't wait until the rest of my toys come so I can set up the machine shop in the new house, keep me away from this garbage.

You're waiting on that - I'm waiting on the new Final Fantasy, the new Call of Duty, the new God of War...

Priorities. I have them :)

New FF MMO? The style of the old one (11? I'm never sure.) was really slick but it took forever to do anything and get anywhere.

I just took up the machining habit in October for the first time. Moved in April and need some widgets to set things up. It's currently more interesting than video games (though I'm becoming a serious minecraft whore.)

As for games, I'm waiting for Skyrim, ME3, SWTOR and... I can't remember what else. What I need is for Steam to pick up the old C&C series :-)

I actually downloaded the free trial for EQ just to explore Qeynos and see if it might be fun to revisit, but they stuck you on a newbie island and the combat was so painful that I couldn't play it for more than 15 minutes. I did get a little shiver up my spine when I hit level two and had that *DING* sound play.

Ah, memories :p

madwilliamflint 07-13-2011 12:32 PM

Re: Games thread!

EQ1 DING FTW! Seriously. That makes me salivate every time I hear it.

Thing about EQ now is that there are new starting zones, so Qeynos is a ghost town. Freeport has been totally redone though, it's freaky.

I still wanna kill Sgt. Slate and Holly Windstalker.

Apoco 07-14-2011 09:59 AM

Re: Games thread!

That reminds me - for my Shaman I had taken a screen shot of him at each level up. I wonder if I still have my EQ screenshots saved somewhere...

And who cares about Sgt. Slate and getting to KOS with the Freeport faction. I need to go to Oggok and farm myself a Crude Stein for the +CHA!

EDIT: I just had a thought - are emulated EQ servers still around?

Don't know about emulated servers. Too busy searching for secret ale recipes.

I spent most of last night just playing either Beat Hazard or Sanctum.

Beat Hazard is a fun game to hop on and just goof around with.

Sanctum is a fun Tower Defense/FPS game.

No new blockbuster games recently to my knowledge. The ones that I'm tracking & which system I want them for (The majority of these are available on 360, PS3, and PC)

PC:
Battlefield 3
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Diablo 3

PS3:
Driver: San Francisco
Twisted Metal
Uncharted 3 (**** - I still need to play 1 & 2!)

360:
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
Final Fantasy XIII-2

All of these games will likely be worth it.

Uncharted 3 will be great, as will AC:Revelations.

Batman:Arkham City should be very good too.

Aside from:

Minecraft 1.8
SWTOR
ME3 (I'm replaying the Mass Effects all the way through again. Can't get enough.)

There's really nothing I'm interested in coming down. yeah I'll get Skyrim because... eh. it's elder scrolls. But I predict being bored being unable to finish the main quest with an assassin without getting my arse kicked every 3 seconds just like in all the rest of the ES series.

Also I just saw that there's a Fallout MMO coming.

I'm definitely pre-ordering it with the hopes that "early access" means beta at some point. I'm very sad I haven't gotten into beta yet.

Better hurry. They're talking about limiting the number of preorders.

There was a whole "we'll email you in 48 hours to see if you got one" thingie. Maybe it's fake, but maybe it's not.

And the collector's edition is $149 (no, I didn't. that's more than I'm going to spend on the thing + subscriptions.)

As long as they have an actual class system instead of the "instagimp" abstract skill system Fallen Earth uses, it'll be possible. There's a lot of room for some great content there.

Too bad V.A.T.S. can't make the translation though :)

That's true. I guess their hope is to take the setting & control scheme moreso than the actual game. Removing VATS and changing the leveling system are HUGE changes

Absolutely. The only thing that really CAN survive the translation process is content and "flavor." Everything else has to change, from the console-like interface to the levelling system.

They've got a leg up with the way they've been going with crafting and such.

It can work. But it's definitely not going to be Fallout 5 (or whatever that number would end up being.)

This Star Wars pre-order is absurd. Limiting a DIGITAL game? Are they afraid they'll run out of bites?

And a PRE-ORDER FEE? Are you ****ing kidding me? Even gamestop, which is known for nickle and diming people to hell, doesn't charge a fee for pre-orders. $65 for a MMO that you will then have to pay a monthly fee for?

No. EA - **** you. This is completely unacceptable and I absolutely refuse to support it.

Well, a legitimate reason to throttle preorders is starting server capacity.

Playing the Battlefield 3 alpha right now. Little rough and EAs new origin service kinda sucks compared to steam. Also picked up Captain America, which pretty much ripped off Batman Arkham Asylum. Which is a good thing, game is pretty decent.

Yeah - pretty much all of those should be out late Q4 of this year or early Q1 of next.

Also - did anyone watch the SHOUTcraft Invivational 2 this weekend? I can't BELIEVE the outcome (I won't say it in case any of you are going to watch the videos on YouTube and don't want it spoiled).

This one is coming to PC. Do not buy it on the PC. For reasons listed in this article.

Essentially - if you want to play Driver: San Francisco on PC you have to have a constant internet connection. This is for your computer to have constant communication with their 3rd party DRM server. (Been done before and REALLY annoying. If your internet connection blips off for a second you're out of the game and have to restart. Here's to hoping their autosave feature is good)

In addition - Ubisoft is really going to start laying into the Uplay system...it will cost about $10 to get access to multiplayer on consoles. This is to make sure that they will get a cut of all used game sales. Oh wait - I mean to help them cover server costs. Yeah - that was the official statement I mean.

I really don't like some of the things that have been happening in the gaming industry lately. My fear is that crap like this becomes standard.

A video regarding a company that claims to be able to get rid of Polygons all together. Doing this would make graphics real. Really - you wouldn't be able to tell a difference any longer.

I'm not convinced that it is truly a viable option without forcing everyone in the world to massively update their computer...but it is still amazing to see.

Game is ruined IMO

I've heard a lot of people say they thought the game was ruined...but I don' think so at all.

The fact that it is online only is lame, I'll admit (even though I only ever played D1 and D2+Expansion online). But most people seem to take offense at the idea of real currency being used to buy items.

Keep in mind that those items are only for sale from other players and still have limits on them as far as level goes (iirc). The absolute end-game items probably won't be available for a while anyway because they are a player-to-player transaction and not player-to-blizzard. And lets be honest - purchasing virtual goods for cash in WoW, D2LoD, EQ, any online game has been around for a while. What they are doing is legalizing the act, protecting the consumer, and taking some off the top for themselves.

I can see where the fears are coming into play...but I can't see it really being a game killer. Is it a game changer? Of course - any new mechanic is. But I doubt that it is going to be as utilized as people fear it will be.

I am really just pissed that it is going to be online to play. I am currently "deployed" to a naval station and the internet here is horrible. The last time I ran a speed check at my hooch I came up with .09mbs. The only thing it is good for is browsing the interwebz and buying cigars online.

Interesting stuff. I think that from the perspective of being something new, I'm sorta honor bound to try it. Looks like it could be interesting.

Besides if I buy any more cigars I'm going to need a third coolidor so I've got to chill for a while on that.

The Fallout/Elder Scrolls stuff all just ground to a halt for me. They just take too damn long. I recently hit the Oblivion/Morrowind GOTY for $15 on Steam, booted up morrowind (and remembered why it was so much better than oblivion) and got sick of it after an hour. Same thing with New Vegas.

I used to be such a proud RPG monkey.

I'll end up getting Skyrim out of habit "just to see" I guess. But I'm not as excited as I should be for a $60 game.

I hear you, but I'm a persistent little bastard. Plus, with all the side storylines and the fact that I just sometimes boot up the game to go on killing sprees. It amuses me to know end and sometimes, I even actually start to do the main storyline to progress my character.

Oblivion/Morrowind is an excellent game, but damn, that thing takes forever and a day. I seriously almost rage quit after it took me an hour to get somewhere, to only get jumped/killed and having to repeat it all over again. Granted, I could have skipped that by saving along the way, but sometimes I really push my luck.

I'm looking forward to Skyrim, once again, that's just habit kicking in. Hopefully I'll be able to keep interested in it, but at the exact same time. I'm not sure if I can invest five or so hours every time I play it. Cause those types of game need a lot of time to do anything in one sitting.
