You can strip down pretty much any single thread heavy gauge (lower #) wiring used for electronics such as phone or ethernet or even grounding electrical panels.

If you are going to use any type of electrical wire 10 to 14 gauge be sure to hit it with some steel wool or fine grit emery paper. Wire these day has a very thin plasticoat on it to help reduce oxidation.

it is actually "platinum" that is in cat converters. that is what these things are being stolen left and right for. not copper.

Heh, the cat would weigh about 300lbs at the current price of scrap copper. There's also Palladium and Rhodium in there too.

Oh yeah, don't use any of the older pennies for 'demolding'. They're most likely worth more than a penny.

Just bought a hydra tonight and I'm going to do this tomorrow I think. I filled the hydra up tonight, and after two hours of it running in my cabinet, the stupid buzzer started going off. I don't know what the hell the deal is....Not to mention that my humidity hasn't changed much at ALL in those two hours. this cabinet is turning into a pain in the ass.

It's a cool thing you're doing - not that I would expect anything different.

The copper doesn't impart any metallic tang?

Hmmm . . . I don't really have anything to do today. I might take a ride over to Michael's and do this to my Hydra.

Re: Re-Upped my Cigar Oasis (picture intensive)

I was able to get a hold of the Water Jewels and did this to my Oasis. Could not be happier. Those things get huge. I put 1/2 to 3/4 a table spoon in a Solo cup and filled full with distilled water and in the morning the thing was full. Pretty interesting. I was able to stuff almost all of them in my XL IIs cartridge and she is running fine. Next time I refill I will probably mix some PG solution with the distilled water to keep things headed in the right direction.
Thanks for the tips on the mod!

I'm afraid that my hydra's floral foam may be starting to get mold. I think that these "water jewels" will work great.

Does anyone know where I can buy these "water jewels" online?

I have a Michael's like 5-10 minutes from me but I can't drive b/c of my recent surgery. I haven't been able to find them online anywhere.

Is there anything else you can buy online that are comparable to these "water jewels"?

Thanks

Re: Re-Upped my Cigar Oasis (picture intensive)

Myself & several of the guys I herf with on a regular basis have just removed the foam to increase the volume of water that it holds and left it at that. It still does as it claims to but there is a lot less time spent in baby sitting the water level.......... Putting any media back in it will just consume space in the water cartridge and seem kind of pointless in this type of device.:2

Re: Re-Upped my Cigar Oasis (picture intensive)

so you are saying that you are now "water only" in the cartridge?

i thought about that originally but i decided to use the crystals so the humidity would enver spike too high. but now im just using beads to safeguard that.... perfect combo (even though i havent needed the beads, just did it for peace of mind)

Just water in the Oasis and a large Tupperware lid with the edges trimmed down a bit to fit under the bottom shelf with about 1lb. of 65% beads in it.
No bubbles no troubles!!!

yep, i never needed the safeguard (before i put beads in there) but the beads give me peace of mind!

Re: Re-Upped my Cigar Oasis (picture intensive)

This is exactly what I was looking for. Sorry to bump an old thread folks, but one more question:

I have the Hydra LG and have removed it due to the humidity this summer (tons of rain up this way). When I removed it and let it dry out, the cartrdge was moldier than a 5 month old glass of milk. So I would like to do the whole "gell" thing.

Should I do half the beads with PG and half of them with just distilled?

kydsid 07-14-2009 09:59 AM

Re: Re-Upped my Cigar Oasis (picture intensive)

I don't use 50/50 with the gel in my oasis only distilled water. I am unsure if 50/50 would accomplish anything as the beads are only designed to hold water.

I will say that when I went through the process after S15 posted this thread I tried two different types of gell I found at the local hobby shop. I tried a spherical type and a more chunky random type. I like the latter as the spheres seem too good at holding water and were designed more to look nice in a vase.

Re: Re-Upped my Cigar Oasis (picture intensive)

I tore the foam out of my hydras a long time ago.
I fill them with distilled water, and every time they go empty I scrub them out with a bottle brush.
I tried the gel route and the gel would crust over in the hydra and then they'd go off on the alarm. Plus the gel turns green and grows stuff.
Just plain old distilled water seems to work real well. :tu

Re: Re-Upped my Cigar Oasis (picture intensive)

I debated about what to do with the oasis after it ruined about 40 cigars and took the easy route, stomped the crap out of it and threw it in the trash where it belonged. Worst $100 piece of junk ever. Nothing on them works right on any kind of dependable basis. Sorry but I rant on certain things that I feel are inferior and I am still venting on the Oasis after 2 years. Beads have relieved my humidity headache quite well.:)

Here are some detailed pics of the Watersorb crystals I added to my Oasis after ripping the foam out.......amazing how they grow so quickly

Word of caution: Make sure not to put too many in the Oasis or the crystals will rise and possibly interact with the Oasis fan ;)

Can anyone who has been using the gel or water jewels for a long time comment as to how well they are working over a long period of time? I am thinking about doing this to my Oasis, but am curious for long-term feedback now that folks did this several years ago.

I was just given an Oasis to go with the Trunkador:
http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=51363

So, let me get this straight you just take out the foam and fill it with distilled water, no beads? no "ice?" just water nothing else?

Re: Re-Upped my Cigar Oasis (picture intensive)

I am now onto just water BTW too.

No worries, no issues.

Re: Re-Upped my Cigar Oasis (picture intensive)

Wanted to note that I did this mod over 2.5 years ago to an Oasis ULTRA (the little slim one) that had been bombed to me. I've been using the same bag of "cracked ice" since then that S15 recommended and have had ZERO issues. Every 1-2 months I check it and recharge them.

For the Ultra cartridge I actually broke it apart to get the foam out and then superglued it back together. I'd love to use just water like you guys do with the larger Oasis models but I'd more than likely have to position it standing upright which is not optimal.

Best DIY Mod I have done to date and mad props to S15DK!

Re: Re-Upped my Cigar Oasis (picture intensive)

On the surface this is pure genius. I too had zero success with beads or KL in the Hydra instead of the foam.
I cut a new chunk of foam and it quickly and solidly returned my foot locker humidor to perfect humidity. Then after only about a month I checked the foam and the entire underside was speckeled with white mold spores. Busto.
I am going to mock up something where the Hydra containing only distilled water sits in a container of KL and see how it goes over a few months.

Re: Re-Upped my Cigar Oasis (picture intensive)

Really, I am sorry to hear this.

As stated a bit ago, i am now doing straight water in the cartridge with some grain alcohol. works fine.

BigJPinDC 02-15-2012 12:43 PM

Re: Re-Upped my Cigar Oasis (picture intensive)

Straight water is rocking so far. The humidor is solid and barely half the water is gone. Looks like a winner here.
