Colosimo was a major early Outfit boss in pre-Prohibition Chicago...about 1920-21 he dumped his longtime (Italian) wife for a young (non-Italian) singer at his restaurant, which outraged many in the Chicago underworld and opened up an opportunity for his longtime second-in-command, Johnny Torrio, to remove him and take his place. To do the job, Torrio brought in a young man from Five Points, Brooklyn...named Alphonse Capone. |

Have really enjoyed this so far....

Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
I thought the second episode was a bit slow. I was hoping for more action, but maybe this set things up for the next few episodes and things can start happening.

Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
While we are certainly enjoying it, my wife and I have taken to calling this show B00bwalk Empire...

I think this might be a one season show, since it is loosely following history and might be wrapped up in one season. I can't see Scorsese doing TV long term. :2

Just finished up watching the latest episode. It was my favorite so far. I really like Jimmy's character. Love how their using Jimmy to show how WWI veterans were "the Lost Generation". If the show makes it five more season's they'll be talking about a "new" book that comes out in 1925, "The Great Gatsby" :tu

Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
This show looks great, good scenery, great costumes, incredibly detailed period depictions. What I'm missing is a story to pull me in and keep me interested. I just don't have a reason to care about any of the characters right now. After three weeks lets go through em Jimmy - He's decided he wants to be a gangster and has just abandoned his common-law wife and son. Nucky - he likes to sleep with showgirls, is move liquor and is free with his money - only slightly redeeming qualities I've seen are that he deals fairly with everyone and takes on charity cases. The sheriff brother is an ass and is only still around because of Nucky. They can't seem to decide what to do with the irish widow, one week she is coming to Nucky for help, next week refusing it, pretending to be too proud to take it. All the remaining characters are caricatures of mobsters, showgirls, black leaders, and businessmen. I'll give it a few more weeks, to see if there are some more interesting developments, but so far I just see a number of very good actors (Buscemi, Gretchen Mol and Michael K. Williams mainly) wasting their time on weak material.
The Sopranos worked because Tony was an engaging character. We didn't like him, weren't meant to. But we wanted to know more about him, just as we wanted to know more about his crew and his family. We wanted to see just how far he would go, and how low he would sink. Boardwalk Empire is missing the human depth that was the center of The Sopranos. |
Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
The Sopranos was likely the last of the great tv or movie mob
depictions. Ive been going to AC, as we call it in Philly, since i was 2 yrs old, before the casinos. I actually was the parking lot attendant next to the Ritz as a summer job after my freshman yr. in college. Empire is showing a snapshot of prohibition that isnt normally talked about. How many of us knew AC played such an intergral part in liquor then. Nucky was in the right place at the right time, and he knew what to do with it. I predict the girl in the dress shop becomes his girlfriend. |
Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
If they drag this out long enough, it could be a prequil to The Sopranos.
|
Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
From the 20's to the 90's... Thats some serious dragging out of a storyline.
|
Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
Going to watch the latest episode later tonight. I'm engaged, but not yet thrilled by the show.

Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
I liked Sundays episode. A couple of quetions...
#1 - Who was the guy that slashed the hooker's face? #2 - Who was the girl toward the end that grabbed the guys junk and said "I know what you want, maybe after the show?" |

#1: a man affiliated with the crew who already possessed the chicago area's alcohol provisions. I think he was making a statement to Jimmy and al. #2: the woman was jimmy's mother, and the guy was lucky Luciano. |
Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
Anyone elso think that Jimmy is Nuckys son?
Also it seems like that irish woman is going to be the beginning of the end for Nucky as well. |

The last episode was really good IMO. They are doing a great job mixing in the historical events of the times, no matter how nasty, with the plot development: prevalence of the KKK throughout America in the 20s, Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, debate about the League of Nations, Jim Crow laws etc. I'm hoping next they'll show a reunion of Civil War vets :tu |

Just got done with tonight's episode. Looks like everyone is giving into their temptations. Not sure what Jimmys mom wants with his kid, could go a few ways. I'm sure of one thing that Shouder woman is the beginning of the end.:2

Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
WORD. Damn Jimmy's girl just offed herself, I don't blame her that massive scar and stitching. Decent episode for sure.
WOW nucky's hitting the poor chick with a kid! Shes a feminist and ruined his party...I saw him hitting it but DAMN. |
Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
Just finished the 5th episode. Some good history references that made me happy and we got some Civil War vets in there :tu
What happened to Lucky Luciano and Jimmy momma though? He wasn't in the episode :hm |
Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
This is such a great show. They are not shy about nude scenes either :tu!

The prohibition agent is pretty creepy.
Wish they hadn't used a body double for Margaret Schroeder. Bit surprised by it, since the actress has done nudity before, though it was some time ago. Some good violence, the way it happened was great. Was wondering if Jimmy Darmody a real person? Quick google seems to indicate that his character is based on James Boyd, who was the assistant to Nucky. Anyone know anything about him? |
Re: "Boardwalk Empire" Season 1 Banter
Awesome episode! I was shocked at the way the Chicago meeting ended...

This was the first great episode so far in this series imo, hope they keep this up.
