My green label.
What's left of it. Just peeled it off. What a mess to clean up. What should I use to get the glue off? |

Re: Rolex Owners?..
Cleaned up the mess with a bit of soapy water.
Looks and feels better for sure. I was afraid to wet the watch trying to take it off (scroll down) JUST KIDDING!!! Mine has seen many reefs. |

Re: Rolex Owners?..
Carlos, great story and I understand the Rolex prestige. But never wanted one myself. Do any of y'all ever have a problem with them? One post earlier said "doesn't keep good time but nice watch". Nice watch that doesn't keep good time? Anyway my point is that my ex worked at a jewelry store that had a watch maker certified to work on Rolex, and it was the most brought in watch with problems. My understanding is you pretty much have to wear them every day or get that automatic watch winder, other wise you will have problems.
Anyway I want a Concord watch myself, nothing to crazy under the $1000.00 mark. |

Neat looking watch. Just afraid to wear it. As far as the Rolex, mine keeps time very well. My wife's and my mom's do also. My dad's on the other hand, different story. So 3 out of 4. I had mine serviced once due to stupidity. I beat the crap out of my mail box post with a bat (someone hit it with a car and it fell over), trying to dig it in a bit until I got the post replaced so I could still get mail delivery, and did it with my watch on. As result, stopped working completely and had to send it in to Rolex in NY. Cost me almost $600 by the time they were done, as also replaced the crystal, hands and forget what else (hands due to glow in the dark crap fading out). My dad serviced his once due to not working well. My mom and wife have never serviced theirs in nearly 14-15 years. |
Re: Rolex Owners?..
Rolex keep as good a time as any other watch of that caliber. As long as they have the same vibration, they should have similar accuracy until they wear. The more jeweled the watch is, the less need for oil and oil oxidizes over time. Rolex is known for accuracy and ruggedness of the movement.
You watchsmith probably saw more Rolex as there are a lot of them. Current production is 800K+ a year. So, even if they were making 300k+ 30 years ago, that millions and millions of Rolexes around the world. All automatic watch should be serviced about 4 years. If you have a tool to remove the case back, you can play around the advancement, but if it need service, it needs service. |

I was under the impression my watch is built as a solid case, from the top down, as opposed to via opening the back as most watches. I thought they built the case sort of like a boat and drop things in from the top down, making it difficult for just anyone to open them without causing markings to the case as they attempt to do so. |
Re: Rolex Owners?..
Adjusting a watch is always a compromise as the time will gain or retard in certain positions. When they say a watch is adjusted to seven positions, the watch is actually in a cradle a turned in seven different positions. A ticker marks above or below a center line which indicates perfect timing. No watch is going to be perfect in every position, but ones with the Turbillion escapements come the closest.

The case is opened with this: http://i.ehow.com/images/a04/ne/iu/r...ch-800X800.jpg It does require skill as you don't want to scratch the back and more importantly putting back you don't want to crimp a gasket or something. Between a solid case (not sure if they use an inner case like on some watches) and thick crystal, it's pretty solid. Older Rolex use acrlylic crystal that is softer, but more adaptable and easier to polish. Some watches have proprietary tools to open the caseback like Baume Mercier for instance. They want to make the money on the service or least make you buy their tool. |
Re: Rolex Owners?..

I know they can be opened but thought it was from the top down, as opposed to most watches from the bottom in. As to the tool, I was under the impression it was proprietary but some folks open them using similar tools, just not the same as Rolex. |

Just thought I would mention CA is like going to college every day.

Re: Rolex Owners?..
So can anyone get a discount on a Rolex?
Depending on the next step in my career I might be interested in getting one...still a ways off though :xxx |
Re: Rolex Owners?..

Does not make sense. What I could find on the web all said it was the caseback like a normal watch. I am not saying, "I'm right, you're wrong", but haven't seen anything contrary online. I would like to be wrong as it would be a lot more interesting to me. |
Re: Rolex Owners?..
The best "discount" on a Rolex from an authorized retailer is usually about 10%. You may have had to buy with them previously to get it. If you go outside the USA it can be more. Many dealers won't discount a Rolex because they know the guy behind you will pay full retail. You can get deeper discounts shopping on-line, but of course like other things we purchase on-line, know & trust your vendor.

The easiest way to lose your account is to offer a discount. Not to say folks don't do it. I got 15% on mine via someone I knew but that could have cost him his account. |

Re: Rolex Owners?..
I think I can get for 15% off in Biel, or for sure get the most sought after ones with no wait or overcharge. LNIB is the best bet with valid warranty card.

Re: Rolex Owners?..
Moses,
Found this awesome link. I was wrong and you were right, not that I thought I could be right as I don't know chit about watchmaking. The only thing I was right about is they are a solid case but are opened from the back as traditional watches are. Check out the images of the equipment used and how they do it. http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=49454 |
Re: Rolex Owners?..
Cool pictures, but I could not see where the watch is regulated from? Maybe someone else could point that out? Do they have a proprietary way of regulating their movements? Usually it's a + and - with an arrow between.
The machine that takes apart the case back in the vice or holds the watch while being worked might the kind of piece our machine shop manufacturers for Rolex. |
Re: Rolex Owners?..
Dayum, nice watch. I wish my dad would have gone halfers on a $20K+ Rolex, well that and wished I had $10K when I was still in high school...haha.

She says in addition to what was on that link, after they are done putting it back together, they place it in a special machine for 48 hours to pressurize it and then ensure water tight. I will ask if she knows how they adjust it. |

Re: Rolex Owners?..
Wow, that tool is a serious looking machine. Yes, they can be opened from the back, and all the settings are in there, but they are put under a extreme amount of pressure afterwards to make sure that they are sealed. Rolex is a serious watch. :) But I certainly cannot comment on how to ascertain a discount, except through a dealer..
Nor do I know how they adjust them. I love loev watches, but the inner workings are still a unknown boundary for me. I opened up a old watch from my grand-dad (RIP) and I slapped the back right back on.. Too complicated, too many small parts, too many things to mess up! |

As Rolex goes, they aren't that expensive. They are almost indestructible. This one keeps pretty good time and runs about 5 minutes fast a month. I've never serviced it and wear it 90% of the time. |

One years ago eh?

Re: Rolex Owners?..
I hope the guy at the Flea Market gave you a good deal. :D

Re: Rolex Owners?..
Haha, ohh he did! Great guy, can you believe that he threw in a LV wallet, and a pair of Diamond Earrings for just 25 bucks extra??

I polished the watch because its easier to maintain the finish that the original brushed finish. It also allows it to dress up a little better. This watch takes a daily beating. Surprisingly the crystal has held up well. |

I would love to get a sub. I have my father's oyster day/date stainless from the early 60's (I think) and my own day/date in stainless that my wife bought me for my 50th birthday. I have worn my own one about 2 times and wear my dad's one daily because of the memories and my wife understands and does not hold it against me. I made the offer to get her a Rolex but she preferred the Seiko version of the watch.

Re: Rolex Owners?..
Yet another example of one's inability to chose his or her parents. I graduated with a 3.7 and got accepted to a nice little private school. My Dad, the Uncles, and I sat down and had a dutch masters (my first cigar, and I thought it wasnt half bad :r) and a glass of 12 year Glenfiddich. A $12,000 watch?? That could have financed my freshman year!

Re: Rolex Owners?..
My uncle was a guy I admired as a youngster. He was a jeweler who I really didn't see much except Thanksgiving. He always had a cigar in his mouth and cool rings and stuff on his fingers.
I remember him saying a Rolex was a rite of passage into manhood. Might be wrong or materialistic, but I couldn't wait to put one on my wrist and a Harley under my ass as fulfillment into things I really wanted but thought to be out of reach. Perhaps the oddest part of the Rolex story is that I bought it by Poopalling a couple thousand dollars to a guy I knew nothing about except some guys in an old cigar forum said he was a good gorilla and he had a large ring guage. http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...e69/Rolex1.jpg Couldn't be happier and I found one that wasn't too "blingy" for my tastes. |

I belonged to a forum several years ago for Car Enthusiasts. We had some similar posts. A kid claimed to own a MB S-600 Lorenser, if I recall. He posted all these photos of an S-600 and claimed it was his. However nobody was ever around to take photos of him next to his sweet ride. It turned out the S-600 did not come in a Lorenser and he was just some 15 yr old high school kid trying to act like he was hot ****. Their are a lot similarities between our pal Colin and the kid I am referencing. |
Re: Rolex Owners?..
I think you guys need to calm down. He might just be nice kid who's proud he got a sweet gift, and everybody's getting on his ass about it. I'm not sure why everyone assumes he's just here to tell you stories.
