Irregardless is legitimate..regardless means "without regard to" so irregardless means"Not without regard to"...do the math...there is a paperback book titled "Eats,Shoots, and Leaves",you will enjoy,on the cover is a Panda with a gun...the book is about the incorrect use of punctuation and syntax,,,,you will love it...

I had a girlfriend who always seemed to find a way to mess up an idiom. Ex. "I'm in the boat right next to you."

According to Bryan A. Garner's "The Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style"...

Irregardless, a semiliterate Portmanteau Word from irrespective and regardless, should have been stamped out long ago. But it's common enough in speech that it has found its way into all manner of print sources--e.g.: "Irregardless of the Big Ten outcome, Knight said he is gratified with IU's improvement over last season" (Louisville Courier-J.). Althought this widely scorned NONWORD seems unlikely to spread much more than it already has, careful users of language must continually swat it when they encounter it.

I don't care if people use it, it's a stupid word.

from wiki:

The prefix ir- means 'not' (as it does with irrespective), and the suffix -less means 'without,' irregardless is a double negative."[1] According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Irregardless was first acknowledged in 1912 by the Wentworth American Dialect Dictionary as originating from western Indiana. Barely a decade later, the usage dispute over irregardless was such that, in 1923, Literary Digest published an article titled "Is There Such a Word as Irregardless in the English Language?"[2]

Well done!!

I hate seeing irregardless. It is definitely one of my English pet peeves.

Lumped in here, I think. We (speaking in the Royal Sense, of course), wouldn't want to clog up the Nuthouse with too much superfluous banter. ;)

"Whats your watch say?" (Meaning what time is it please?)

"How many corns do you want?" (Meaning how many ears of corn would you like me to cook for you?)

"Can I see the remote?" (Meaning please pass me the remote.)

"We don't got no more Extra Grispy" (Meaning I'm sorry, we're sold out of Extra Grispy chicken at this time.)

I love Massachusetts!

Sounds like Bama to me. I'm sure spoken differently but still.

FYI: Grispy: A term used to describe ones goofy, but Krispy looking clothes , shoes, hat etc. Usually complementing someones ridiculous freshness and/or good looks. Combining Goofy and Krispy gets you Grispy.

What superfluous banter. Most of it is barely fluous.:hf

Spelling and grammar in a resume are crucial. In a forum like this, not so much. But I still hate it when people talk about their "pallets" in reference to cigar flavor. If you have a pallet in your mouth you should probably see a doctor. Or a dock worker maybe?

Starscream 04-22-2009 07:48 PM

Re: Allow me to be a grammer nazi for a while

I be's a ninth grade grammer teecher, but I hates using me some proper grammer when I talk. I's gots me a Southern dialect and is proud of it.
I do use proper grammar when talking in many situations, (such as when speaking in a professional setting, church, and in business matters) but I turn the dialect back on when I'm around friends and family. I guess that makes me bi-dialectal.

BTW, if Eye-talian is the way that Archie Bunker says it, then it must be the correct usage.

Thats just the way some people seem to type around here. No capitals and no attention to spelling or what they are actually writing, makes it worthless to try to follow some folks posts. :2

Re: Allow me to be a grammer nazi for a while

While we're on the subject, I know most teachers tell us that "aint" is not a word. "Ain't" is a word; it's a contraction made up of the words "am" and "not". Amn't just doesn't sound right. "Ain't" is not proper grammar but it is a word.

You should see some wine boards, I can never explain how people spending hundreds of dollars on a bottle of wine can't tell the difference between palate and pallet.

Because being able to spend/spending hundreds on a bottle of wine doesn't require intelligence?

Thread drift.

Actually, intelligence IS required, IMO. Price has nothing to do with quality. Same as with cigars and any other consumer product.

Believe me, I'm there with the OP. Poor grammar is just rampant, and not just in schools.
Ask a High School teacher...it's BAD.

Even at work I see people TYPE just as they speak. No difference. As a result, work from our office can seem completely unprofessional.

Don't people know you write in a different manner than you speak?
Of course ideally we should all speak proper grammar...something I have started to attempt.
Some people think it makes you sound pompous....I prefer the term "educated"
