Re: Allow me to be a grammer nazi for a while
Irregardless is legitimate..regardless means "without regard to" so irregardless means"Not without regard to"...do the math...there is a paperback book titled "Eats,Shoots, and Leaves",you will enjoy,on the cover is a Panda with a gun...the book is about the incorrect use of punctuation and syntax,,,,you will love it...

Re: Allow me to be a grammer nazi for a while
I had a girlfriend who always seemed to find a way to mess up an idiom. Ex. "I'm in the boat right next to you."

Irregardless, a semiliterate Portmanteau Word from irrespective and regardless, should have been stamped out long ago. But it's common enough in speech that it has found its way into all manner of print sources--e.g.: "Irregardless of the Big Ten outcome, Knight said he is gratified with IU's improvement over last season" (Louisville Courier-J.). Althought this widely scorned NONWORD seems unlikely to spread much more than it already has, careful users of language must continually swat it when they encounter it. |

from wiki: The prefix ir- means 'not' (as it does with irrespective), and the suffix -less means 'without,' irregardless is a double negative."[1] According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Irregardless was first acknowledged in 1912 by the Wentworth American Dialect Dictionary as originating from western Indiana. Barely a decade later, the usage dispute over irregardless was such that, in 1923, Literary Digest published an article titled "Is There Such a Word as Irregardless in the English Language?"[2] |

"Whats your watch say?" (Meaning what time is it please?)
"How many corns do you want?" (Meaning how many ears of corn would you like me to cook for you?) "Can I see the remote?" (Meaning please pass me the remote.) "We don't got no more Extra Grispy" (Meaning I'm sorry, we're sold out of Extra Grispy chicken at this time.) I love Massachusetts! |

FYI: Grispy: A term used to describe ones goofy, but Krispy looking clothes , shoes, hat etc. Usually complementing someones ridiculous freshness and/or good looks. Combining Goofy and Krispy gets you Grispy.

Re: Allow me to be a grammer nazi for a while
Spelling and grammar in a resume are crucial. In a forum like this, not so much. But I still hate it when people talk about their "pallets" in reference to cigar flavor. If you have a pallet in your mouth you should probably see a doctor. Or a dock worker maybe?

Re: Allow me to be a grammer nazi for a while
I be's a ninth grade grammer teecher, but I hates using me some proper grammer when I talk. I's gots me a Southern dialect and is proud of it.
I do use proper grammar when talking in many situations, (such as when speaking in a professional setting, church, and in business matters) but I turn the dialect back on when I'm around friends and family. I guess that makes me bi-dialectal. BTW, if Eye-talian is the way that Archie Bunker says it, then it must be the correct usage. |

Re: Allow me to be a grammer nazi for a while
While we're on the subject, I know most teachers tell us that "aint" is not a word. "Ain't" is a word; it's a contraction made up of the words "am" and "not". Amn't just doesn't sound right. "Ain't" is not proper grammar but it is a word.

Re: Allow me to be a grammer nazi for a while
Believe me, I'm there with the OP. Poor grammar is just rampant, and not just in schools.
Ask a High School teacher...it's BAD. Even at work I see people TYPE just as they speak. No difference. As a result, work from our office can seem completely unprofessional. Don't people know you write in a different manner than you speak? Of course ideally we should all speak proper grammar...something I have started to attempt. Some people think it makes you sound pompous....I prefer the term "educated" |

I was thinking of what to post, and went through a list in my head.
A) Nope. B) Nope. C) Nope. D) Nope. E) Ugly. Therefore, I will not post in this thread. (Except for this one recounting my dilemma. :tu) |
