Pair of punches showed up today that I ordered to play with. Cut my first cigar with the Palio last night, that was nice. Been cutting so far.

I used to punch, then I got a Palio...

I used to punch, but now i cut everytime. The key is to just take of the top cap, and see that nice divot left behind.

I have a punch, but it gets less use than my Xikar. I have punched maybee three or four smokes, but I prefer to use my Palio for everything. I would punch a chisel, but I rarley smoke them.

Cut with my trusty Palio, everytime...

Re: Punch or Cut?

I'll do whatever it takes to get the cigar smoked. If I have a cutter near me, I'll use it. If not, I'll use whatever I can get my hands on. I don't normally bite the end off my cigar, but I'm not at all adverse to the idea.
I have a v cutter I've never used, and in the past I carried a lighter with a punch.
I mostly use one of my Xikars.

Re: Punch or Cut?

I have always been a cut guy, started with cheap guillotine and went to a palio of which I thought I would never stop using. However of late I have been using my pocket knife, it has now become a new ritual for me to take my time carefully cutting the cap through to the point were it just pops off but none of the filler is cut. Anal perhaps but just a little more time in enjoying my sticks.

Re: Punch or Cut?

I personally don't even own a punch, so for the most part im strictly a cut guy. However, if a buddy or someone has a punch available i'll probably use it just because it's something different. Nice to change things every now and then.

Re: Punch or Cut?

I tend to cut up to 55 RG and punch anything larger. I like to punch the Taboo Twist Toros that are 58's - I like the amount of smoke I get and can control it if neccessary by opening up the opening.

I think it depends on the draw; I've punched a stick that had lousy draw and ended up cutting it to be able to finish it.

Palio cut most of the time, but I use a punch occasionally.

I'd like to see a demo of this "pinch" method?

Punching is far superior for mixed filler cigars, I cut everything else.

I usually cut but have been known to punch.

Re: Punch or Cut?

I bought a Boston V cutter 10 years ago and it still cuts like it did on the first day. l love the V cut as it is deep enough to pull the smoke and clean enough because of the surgical cut it gives. For the $110 I paid for it I would hope to shout!

Re: Punch or Cut?

I always go with a cut. V or straight simply depends on my mood at the time. I do enjoy the V cut though.

I enjoy a v-cut but most of the time I just straight cut.

Either, though mostly I cut. I'm with everyone else on punching for larger RG

Re: Punch or Cut?

I used a punch for the first time a couple of months ago, and now I punch all the time except for cutting the occasional torpedo. I like the draw better with the punch.

Re: Punch or Cut?

I used to use a punch and a V cut when I first started mainly because I was afraid of cutting too much of the cap off when using a straight cut, now I am more used to it and really prefer the straight cut to the punch or the V

Cigary 01-11-2009 09:03 PM

Re: Punch or Cut?

I cut with a Xicar and V cut with a BostonCutter.

Re: Punch or Cut?

Cranial Screw Top, of course. :ss

I developed it after watching with horror what some people did to the caps of their cigars, lopping off 1/8" or more. I frequently see people cutting off almost the entire cap to the cigar. I've found that cutting a cigar this way leaves a nice intact cap and reduces the amount of unraveling problems I had before using this method.

Step one:
Find a cigar that has a nice rounded cap for best results. Will not work on torpedo or belicoso cigars, though I confess I have never tried.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/d...IMG_0016-4.jpg

Step two:
Place cutter gently and barely into the sides of the top of cap. While holding the cutter there, rotate the cigar.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/d...IMG_0017-3.jpg

Step three:
Peel off the cap. The cap should just pop off with the cutter, I left a tad bit uncut to show that the cap is coming off but there was no filler cut at all.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/d...IMG_0018-3.jpg

Final result:
Should be a very clean cut of just the cap without destroying any filler and leaving the remainder of the cap intact to avoid unraveling of the wrapper.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/d...IMG_0025-4.jpg

And you get bonus satisfaction points for knowing where the name comes from. :groucho:

I have been using Ratter's method for quite some time without fail. If you have not tried it, I suggest you get on board, it delivers one of the best cuts possible IMO.

Re: Punch or Cut?

I was mostly cutting before, but now I find myself punching first if possible, mostly because I prefer my draw a bit on the tighter side. I figure if it's too tight I can lop off more with the cutter afterwards, but if I open it up too much first there's no going back. Also, I find punching better on those cigars with the really squared-off caps.

Re: Punch or Cut?

I acquired a very cool Zino cutter so I've been using that, but I do still like the look and feel of a punched stogie. Just has to be a big enough ring gauge to justify it.

I agree totally so I just punch it multiple times, basically to the same area as I'd do with cutting, just with a punch for the neater edges.
This is it with only the one punch in it
http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/645...punchedoa0.jpg
And this is it punched a few more times. I just start from the middle and work outwards nibbling away with the cutting edge of the punch from the centre outwards.

Having the shoulders still on makes it feel a load nicer when it's on my lips taking a draw.

Depends on the RG, larger ones I like to punch, but most of the time I cut

Re: Punch or Cut?

I have been cutting cc's and punching nc's because the nc's have a looser draw. Some times I punch a cc with a larger rg also.

Re: Punch or Cut?

I punch larger ring gauges (usually 54+) and cut anything less then that.

Re: Punch or Cut?

I have been punching latley. But Sometimes I really like my cigars to breath so I cut. I currently use a Magnum 44 bullet that has been turned into a punch. Its pretty cool, but I want to buy the xikar wolf because it has two punch sizes...

Re: Punch or Cut?

For years I was always a cutter. Last year I tried a punch for the first time and it's good. Much less tobacco particles in the teeth and no annoying caps unwrapping.

I'm about 50/50. I usually punch on-the-go.
