Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I would like to be part of a group buy on this.I could go as high as $150.It seems like a good idea to me.:D

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I would like to get in on a club pipe, just as long as the price is less than $130. I would prefer to have a rusticated pipe with some kind of bend.

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I am not interested in any pipe group buys anymore, but I do have a few pieces of advice for you guys.

First, make sure that the carver that you choose has done group pipes before. Dealing with someone that has never done it before or has little experience dealing with a group's expectations is very frustrating. Especially if the pipes don't meet the group's expectations in quality or appearance once completed.

Next, if you are going to pick a shape before an artisan, make sure that the artisan is comfortable with the shape that you picked and has made it before. It is probably safer to choose the maker and then pick a shape that they make pretty often with possibly some tweaks. It may not be as special or unique, but everyone ends up happy with the quality, appearance and construction.

Lastly, picking a new or up and coming pipe maker can seem attractive due to price or other considerations, but going with one of the more established pipe makers is always a better choice. Even if they may be a bit more expensive, it is worth it to know you are going to get a quality product and if you aren't happy they will make it right. A couple good ones that I can think of off the top of my head would be Tinsky and Boswell.

Good luck to you guys.

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

thanks for the advice Sawyer

I would like to have Tinsky do it, but I doubt he could fit our budget. Boswell is probably the best candidate for price, but they are overwhelmed at the moment, so I don't know how soon they could be done.

I'll probably start sending out some emails next week to see who would even be interested, and figure out a shape and all that from there.

judging from this thread, I think I'll first ask about 1/4 bent poker, then maybe a bent apple.

If whoever picks us up can't/won't/doesn't like doing pokers, would you guys prefer an apple, lovat, or maybe even a dublin

let me know, I think the first round of emails will be to: Boswell, Senatorov, and Kirk Bosi (did the club pipe for IPC last year with great results)

kzm007 03-14-2009 11:14 PM

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I'd still prefer the finished apple in a dark, RX.

But, an unfinished Lovat does look nice as I now look at them, not knowing what they were.

Good luck to you, and thanks for doing this! :)

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I want to be a pain; my updated choices are below.

1. rx2010 ($80-130)
2. JaKaacH ($79-129)
3. Nabinger16 ($81-131)
4. sixpacksunday ($79.50-130.50) pinching pennies!
5. Yellowgoat (up to 130)
6. Savvy (up to 130+)
7. KZM007 ($50 - $130)
8. WWhermit ($50-$150)

I like the idea of a bent or straight finished apple pipe.

I also found some interest in an unfinished/rustic Lovat pipe.

Lastly, as Requiem stated, a churchwarden would give CA a classy sort of appeal for a first pipe, and I really like Zeman's Lord of the Pipe as well as his corkscrew stem on the Fiery Cross model.

Sorry to be such a bother; the more I look, the more I like. No more choices lol.

DrDubzz 03-15-2009 02:09 AM

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

looks like we've got 16 or so that would be interested.

I forgot about Zeman, I will include him in the first round of emails

Just an unofficial vote: I REALLY like Jirsa's work, especially the grain on a number of his pieces.

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I wasnt too partial to the ones on his site, but this one on fleabay has really nice grain.

The price direct from him is attractive too, but I would rather pay a bit more if the quality is going to be more consistent (some of the comments on pipes.org indicated offcenter draft hole, etc.).

sounds like you just had that problem (still waiting for my re-done pipe as well).

i have to agree, i'd stick with a basic shape, one that you know the pipe maker chosen makes frequently and you like the outcome.

anyone looked at Joel Shapiro and his "chubby" pipes? he was a member of CS a while back.

ok, I have emailed and received an initial repsonse from the Boswells.

J.M seems willing to take on our project. I can attest to how well his pipes smoke, and I guarantee he will have the best price point of anyone we've been discussing.

So, take a look here http://www.boswellpipes.com/classicpipegallery.html and post up what catches your eye.

These will be the easiest to have made, and be the most inexpensive. Most of these ran in the 50-90 dollar range when first posted.

I have posted the ones I like, but post yours, or if you see something from a different gallery post that as well. I can call him monday or tuesday if we have a good idea of what we want. I know many wanted a poker, but a nice quarter bent apple or something along those lines may be the best for getting this done and at an agreeable price :wo

All right. I'm glad this got off the ground. Also really happy that Boswell's said they'd do it.

I'm really up for any shape from Boswell. I'm not picky. Bent Apple, Bulldog, Egg, Dublin, Pot, you get the idea. I'm up for whatever.

Thanks for taking the initiative to organize this and get it off the ground Tim.

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I like the shapes you guys are picking out. Might I add though, that I am not a big fan of 1/2 smooth 1/2 rusticated.

Is it possible for him to make some and then rusticate the ones that want it?

It would be nice to offer the option if it is doable for him.

Either way though, I am happy. I love Boswell pipes and it is nice to keep it in a decent price range.

kzm007 03-28-2009 01:09 PM

Re: Asylum edition/club pipe interest thread

I agree with him, I would prefer a smooth bowl over a rusticated on, and would greatly appreciate being able to choose if it is an option - make the pipe a bit more personal and all that :)

I appreciate you heading this up! I can only imagine what a headache it's going to be before it's all said and done. If there's anything I can help with, just shoot me a PM.

I'm definitely on board whatever the pipe and cost ends up being.

Ya'll could get a stamp made for this pipe and would also be for future CA pipes. Add it to the price, divide the cost amongst all members ordering.

Tom, I think we're gonna pursue the Boswell route first, as it will be the most cost effective. If that doesn't work out we can try someone else.

Boswell makes great pipes and it's very likely they'd be under 100 bucks, I just need to get ahold of J.M. who happens to be very busy

alright guys, I'm calling tomorrow, as requested by Mrs Boswell

hopefully I can get JM on the phone for a few and try to figure something out. I will consider all requests, and I'll try to get 1 or 3 options for us to vote on, and hope then just turn it over to the artisan himself.

There are other great makers out there, but I think Boswell is the best combo of price and quality I've seen, plus his pipes are somewhat quirky, so I think that fits this forum pretty well.

if you have any last minute comments or requests or anything, post em up before tomorrow evening
