Not to spoil but can someone explain the murder of the Italian restaurant owner? Did someone think he stole the liquor?

Watched it last night. I don't want to like it because I don't usually get HBO, but it's free this week. I'm getting sucked in!!!!

It was interesting to see a young Lucky Luciano character as well.

If I had 3 female roomates, TV would not be my first priority. ;)

Just watched the first epi and I like it. They have done a great job of taking you back to that time. First class writing, acting, directing, producing....everything. I can't find any faults in the first one.

I just finished reading "Havana Nocturne" which is a history of the Mob in pre-revolutionary Havana.

I was pretty stoked to see some of the characters represented in this series...

I highly recommend the book!

Just finished it up a bit ago. Great stuff so far. I NEVER watch a series from the beginning, so this is new for me. In fact, the only series I've ever watched are the Sopranos and sons of Anarchy.

I'm excited about this series. I came into the Sopranos at about the 3rd season, so I had a lot of catching up to do. I'm gonna see this one from the git-go. I love mod stuff like this.

Got to be honest, I enjoyed this, but I'm still waiting for the story to start. This episode felt a lot more like it was just setting the scene, introducing some characters and maybe planting some seeds that will grow into a story. I enjoyed it for that and I'll keep watching but I'm still waiting to be pulled in by characters that resonate. For the moment, I think they spent too long dwelling on the little details, the costumes, the billboards, the cars, the store signs, etc. and not enough focusing on who these people are and why I should care about them.

Both Steve Buscemi and Scorsese are awesome and have earned the benefit of the doubt from me, though the smaller, long form of TV is very different from the larger short form of cinema.

I agree to ur basic point. they definitely were establishing characters, spending time briefly on their backgrounds (stressing Jimmy was in WWI etc). And with an era different than our own, u need to get the sense of the times in the minds of the views right away. The first episode of the Sopranos is very similar. :2
