Mike, why not try 300blk? All you need is a different barrel. Everything else is the same between 5.56 and 300blk

Except ammo prices and availability! That's the only reason that I've stayed with 5.56 in my AR.

Yes but he was talking about doing a 6.8spc build. 6.8 ammo is more expensive than 300blk

Sorry about that... My comment was out of context.

Honestly, I would love to try out a 300blk upper, but money always stands in the way. With heavy bullets, it can be run suppressed, or with lighter bullets, it has a longer and more effective range than the 5.56.

Okay here's the deal with that title above. Recently acquired a low mles used Smith and Wesson M&P full size pistol in .40 caliber. Didn't realize til afterwards that magazines for those and the full size 9mm version are hard as heck to find.

So yesterday I made my first visit to a Rural King store. Knew they carried ammo and sometimes guns, just thought it would be worth a look see. Darned if they didn't have a good supply of Pro Mag brand magazines for the M&P full sized guns. Knowing Pro mag's lousy rep I was hesitant to buy any but rolled the dice on one. Turned out the price was less than what the shelving tag said, so that was a plus. $16 and tax.

Anyhow my next stop after the store was the range. Darned if that Pro Mag doesn't work exactly as it's supposed to. It fit perfect yet dropped free when the release is pressed. It held the right number of rounds, fed them properly, etc. etc.

Given Pro Mag's track record I am very pleasantly surprised.

UPDATE: I scored a second Pro Mag for my M&P--once again perfect fit and function at the range. Coincidence, or am I onto something good here?

Thanks! It needs some work though. The bore is garbage and the safety is seized. Those are easy fixes though.

A safety is a little important on a 1911 :)

My experience has been that promag fit and function is fine but they use a weaker material for the spring and so they need to be stretched out every now and again, especially when you keep them loaded all the time. You can also rotate them from full leaving one mt at all times and the springs will last longer.

Have you given the Talon Grips a try? Cheap, reversible, and thin. I really like the rubber version when I had my XD

The 300blk was designed around shorter barrels and suppressor use, from what I understand. Not much use/fun for us in Cali. That is why I sold mine I couldn't take full advantage of the round, just my opinion. The only reason I bought one was that the rounds at the time were fairly inexpensive, I think I found them at Midway for under $10 a box. Also I didn't have to buy more magazines just to hold a different round.

Don't get me wrong from what I have seen the round is a good all purpose round for not a lot of money ( I haven't checked prices for 300blk in a while). It just wasn't for me.

It's a great hunting round as well, for places that won't allow .223 to hunt
