Soda vs Cola vs Pop

So most of us drink Pepsi or Coke or some other smiliar brand of soft drink. The question is what do you refer to it as. This seems to vary from region to region. Do you call it Soda, Cola, or Pop?

For me it is soda.

Me: Coke

According to the posted map I'm suppose to be in the "soda" calling area. But nope - everything is 'coke" unless it's Sprite. Sprite is Sprite the rest are coke.

Growing up the in the 50's and 60's we'd just call it by the generic term,,,,coke. There wasn't the grocery store lineup like there is now with a bazillion name brands of soft drinks. When we were asked, " Do you want a coke" it was either Coke or Pepsi, that's all there was. If you wanted root beer you went to the A&W drive up. Ahhh, the golden days when things were simple.

"Diet." Covers everything.

Sorry to threadjack, but this reminds me of a story. Growing up in Europe I was unfamiliar with many of the expressions used in the USA. I asked a gal out on a date in college- to see a movie- and she happened to reach the box office before me- whereupon she turned around and asked; "Are we going Dutch?" Not having a clue what she meant, but wanting to be agreeable, I smiled; "Yes!" OOOPS!

An executive was being moved from NYC to Cincinnati. The moving company was from Cincinnati. As they were unpacking, the exec's wife said: "Careful with those lamps, they are antiques!" The movers, not hearing her well due to the wrapping paper used the typical polite Cincinnati expression for "what?" asked: "Please?"

"OK- PLEASE be careful with those lamps, they are antiques!"

No such thing as a brand called "Coke". There is Coca-cola, Diet Coke, New Coke (hope to God that stuff is gone),etc. Growing up in Atlanta, where Coca-cola is headquartered, it is as Cigary said, soft drinks are referred to as cokes. Now I understand the confusion it can cause but it is not wrong what we say just different than up there. If someone asked me if I wanted a "pop" I'd probably throw up my dukes thinking they were about to swing :D

In the hills where I was raised, everything was called Coke - even if it was Pepsi ! :r

Eventually some of us started calling it soda but we still get weird looks when we say that.

Normally the conversation goes something like this:

Them: What would you like to drink?
Me: Coke
Them: Pepsi okay?
Me: Whatever.

:tpd:

Like a good Yankee Southerner from Chi-cah-go, I call it a Coke. (And I prefer it be one too!)

When they say "Pepsi okay" I lie and say "Same difference!"

I called it pop for 20 years until I joined the Army. After living in the South for 6 years, it is now soda, and I feel like a tool when I go home to the Chicagoland area and say soda.

Soda is the real one. Those folks in WI call "pop". Me neighbor across the street calls it pop. My poor kids were so damn confused when he asked them if they wanted a pop to drink they didn't know how to answer.

All soda is SODA, until you are talking about specific ones, then is coke, pepsi, etc.

It's all called coke, although it's more likely to be Dr Pepper.

I put pop on the grocery list, but I drink soda

I was from that area in Central IL where it was borderline, and called both. I have been in TX now for 11 yrs, and do not call anything coke but Coke. ;)

When I lived in upstate NY many moons ago I referred to it as POP, and people still do to this day in that region.

I now call it - SODA

Called it Pop when I grew up in MN, then moved to VA and was quickly ridiculed by other kids for that, so switched to Soda. I also picked up the southern habit of calling any soft drink "Coke" and then asking what kind.
