Coffee Newb -- Where to start?

So going into the Military I'm pretty sure coffee-drinking is a prerequisite. I don't even know where to begin in trying coffee, what should I start with?

I have been very fond of www.unclebeanz.com Roasts when you order, and IMO a very high quality product. I have about 6 or 7 bags right now that my wife is burning through. As I am typing this, I am enjoying a cup of Jibaro that she made this morning. I also really like the PR Jayuya peaberry prob. my fav however I have many more to try. I suggest not starting on coffee (or solid foods) until after you have taken your oath and gotten to a training station. Best to start where you're at. Drink what they have if you need to stay awake. Report back. And good luck - and thx for your service to our country.

In my house, my South American wife drinks Cafe Bustello as she thinks my expresso and milk drinks are to strong.

In a pinch, or when in South Floridas many cafes, I will drink this happily.

If I have a choice, it's Jerry's Killer Beans or Uncle Norman's Uncle Beanz.

I need to get around to roasting one of these days I'm sure.

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm not a coffee newbie as I drink it everyday however I am a newbie to blends/brands that aren't commercial like Folgers, Maxwell house, or the local Wawa, Starbbucks, or the Keurig machine at works which uses Gloria Jean beans or something like that.

I've never lurked on the coffee forum before but was always intrigued, now that you all provided those links I think it's time to dive in and try something! :tu

Start drinking the worst coffee you can find... this way what ever they have available where youre stationed will probably be an improvement. Its hard to go from the good stuff to the bad stuff.

Will this grind the beans better and more evenly then the cheap one with a blade I have now? To step up my coffeeness (new word maybe?) should I even bother or do I need to spend lots of money on my grinder to taste a difference? I plan on brewing out of this when I get home.
