View Full Version : Chose your truck: Ford, Chevy, Dodge or Toyota

Some friends and I were having this discussion recently. Everyone seemed to be pretty loyal to thier truck. I was not raised having been loyal to any particular auto maker. I have been lucky enough to own one of each of Ford, Chevy and Dodge. By far, all things considered, my 2007 Ford F150 FX4 has been the best truck I've ever owned. Whats your pick?

Depends on size and what for.

If it's post 72 and from Dodge, I rather walk.

I would have selected Honda Ridgeline but it wasn't an option. I've owned 2 F-150's and I have a 93 Ranger with 183,000 miles on it and it runs like a top.:2

Sorry about that. I hadn't really considered Honda an option.

Well, the only one I've owned is my 2006 Dodge Ram. I wasn't beholden to any truck at the time but the deal on the Dodge was too good to pass, quad cab, hemi, decent set of options for $19999. I must say I love the thing.

Chevy for me.

My first truck was a '99 Ford Ranger, I liked it a lot. But after watching how fast it went down hill along with my dads '01 F-150 I decided to try Chevy.

I bought an '05 1500 Silverado that I started to prerunner. Had a mid-travel kit in the front, but one day I swung by the Chevy dealer just for kicks and saw my current truck.

I traded in that Silverado for my current '01 CC LB 2500hd Silverado. What can I say I'm a sucker for diesels.

The Chevys have been my loyalty, but who knows I may switch to a prerunnered 05+ F150 next year. I kinda miss gas now. The one I have always stayed away from was Dodge. Not because they're not good trucks or anything, just because I've never been a fan of their front end style. Also my buddy has one and I jsut can't get use to their driving.

I have a 2001 silverado, and a 2002 F-250. The 01 silverado is the only vehicle I have ever owned that wasn't a ford and it will probably be the last. I have has some problems with it, but all things considered it has been a good truck, but I am just a Ford guy at heart. My next truck is definitely going to be a 4X4 F-250 Power Stroke.

I'm the same way man.... I kinda notice that usually, my most recent truck is my favorite. In the last 10 years trucks have become more and more like Caddys!
I voted for Dodge though. I've never been let down by one of my 3/4 ton or 1 Ton Dodges. Especially with the Cummins.
The new Dodge commercials DRIVE ME NUTS though. As do Chevy's.

My dream truck would be like a 77 C-10

I had a 77 3/4ton GMC - short bed - 4 barrel with headers, side pipes without the bullet mufflers in them. Posi-track - sun roof - custom tuck and roll interior with bucket seats. Pioneer head unit - 200 amp with 4 6x9 Jenson tri's stuck in that little interior - :D

Custom paint, originally had murals on the hood, rear and sides - but had it repainted about 81. Complete paint, door jambs, bed, engine compartment, etc. Engine was mostly brushed aluminum over with blue and red braided hose. To many engine parts to mention. Micky Thompson Weather Vane rims with Goodyears.

Man I loved that truck. In 1985 it had a fuel line leak at the 40 micron filter - caught fire and burned up. That was in Feb. ***** was that I had dropped my "custom" insurance in Jan. Insurance adjuster almost cried with me - he gave me full blue book value which was the best he could do.

I have the fire pictures around here somewhere -

And on edit - Oh yeah - nothing but Fords since that GMC.

Okay - one more edit - forgot about the 85 Dodge 1/2 ton. After that a few Ford Vans until 2000.

Last three trucks:
00 F150 4x4 -
01 F350 Powerstroke Dually Crew Cab -
04 F350 Powerstroke Short Bed, Crew Cab - King Ranch.

ridgeline is a pilot with the back windows chopped off. not a truck :p

Im a chevy guy. Dodges new one is decent, but its fit and finish is less than stellar. Ford doesnt do much for me, a bit too plain jane inside i suppose. meh. I love the new chevys! :D

Back when I was probably 6 or 7 my dad had a 80 somethin Chevy C10. Standard cab short bed I believe. I loved this thing. Baby blue with a 350 and 5 speed(I think). One winter he was comin into town off a hill and put it in a pond nose first. Had it pulled out and kept drivin it and she kept goin but the back axels got bent and it messed up the rear end. Had it fixed and kept drivin it. One day she just caught on fire :( and that was the end of big blue

Well, Ive still got my 98' Dodge 3500 ...They will pobably cremate me in that truck.

Would have bought her a Dodge, but we got a great deal on this one,
It's a Cadilac of a truck.

Latest purchase was a F150 Super Crew Cab 4x4. It all came down to legroom in the back seat. Ford had plenty for my 6'2" frame. Chevy was 6" less, Dodge at least 8-10" less than Ford. Forget Toyota!! Knees in my chin in their 4-door.

Third Ford truck I've owned. Owned 3 chevys in the past. didn't last as long as the fords. Never owned a Dodge. Looked at one when brought the Ford, but they were $4000 more than Ford, and dealer would not deal; at all!!! Ford made me one helluva a deal. No wonder Dodge needs bailout.

1990 Ford F-150.

She's a beater truck, for sure. Lives outside, packrats have eaten up some of the wiring and most of the vacuum lines, only seven of the eight cylinders fire, brake line leaks, power steering leaks, neither the a/c or heat work anymore; ... but she still gets the job done!

Like somebody else already said, it would depend the reason. Plus, I've not had a truck since my 86 Toyota 4X4. I really liked it, but to be fair, I'd have to have a look at everything out there since it's been so long...

I've got a '99 Dodge Dakota with 130,000 miles on it and other than routine maintenance and the fact that the air don't work she’s been a pretty good truck. I am done with Dodge though. The gas mileage on Dodges suck. I average about 13 miles to the gallon since I do a lot of stop and go city driving. My dad’s got a Full size Chevy Silverado and he gets better gas mileage than me. I been wanting a Chevy Silverado but if I got a good deal on an F-150 I would buy it.

I've got a 98 Dakota w/ 178,000mi on it and the only problem I've ever had was a rear wheel speed sensor at 95k mi. I still get 25mpg out of her! (4cyl, 5sp) The radiator has developed a leak this winter, I think one of the plastic tanks has cracked...

I also have an 07 4Runner that I love, so I'm a bit torn.

Ive had 3 GM trucks, a Suburban, a Yukon and most recently a new Avalanche. I have always liked the way that the GM trucks feel on the road and the generous interior space therein. The Yukon (1999) had a TON of problems, I eventually traded it in for another vehicle.

The Avalanche is probably the best truck I have ever owned - it gets 17/18mpg city and rides like a dream. My passengers say that it feels like they are in a car with a tuned suspension. The front seats are factory bench, so I have room to stretch out without banging my knees into plastic console supports. I have had minor issues with it, but nothing major and all have been addressed quickly.

I have always been a GM guy... But, the new 2009 F150 is a damn nice truck - and Ford hasnt asked for any federal bailout bucks (yet).... I may go Ford for my next truck, will see....

'08 Titan for me. It's been more than I could ever ask for from a half-ton, in every way.

Previously had a 97 F150, which was great, but I spent a ton on upkeep. Wish I had kept it to plow the driveway and for beater trips to Home Depot and hunting. I only got $1k for it with 110k (I think) when I traded it in.

Best truck I have ever owned was a GMC Z71. I didn't know how much I loved that truck until I sold it. I was 19 when i bought it and I was just trying to get some good credit but a year and a half later the payments were too much as i was going to school and I sold it. Bought it from my pops and he gave me a deal, I was able to buy a 1997 tacoma 4X4 with the 4 cylinder. Second best truck I've owned (I've had four).

Here's the GMC, I'll get a pic of the Taco later.

Yah I know (tear). I didn't go to crazy on the lift, it's just 6" with 35" tires. I got some pics of the front end on a big stump but can't find it. I wasn't afraid to get it out rough it up a bit. Some of these trucks have never seen dirt.

I've only ever owned 1 truck, an itty bitty 1992 Nissan pickup. Best vehicle I've ever had. I put almost 170,000 miles on it and the only thing that ever went bad was the water pump at 150,000 miles.

I voted Ford because that's what I would buy if I ever get another truck.

I agree. I've owned 3 Fords and 2 GMCs and my 2 Tototas were the best trucks by far. My 1986 I bought for $800 with 275 K miles. I drove it for a year and sold it for $1500 and it was running perfectly. Just saw the guy the other day and he still drives it daily and has over 400 K. My '99 Tacoma is the one I miss the most, perfect vehicle but sold it a while back for my GMC 1500 w/t because of my need to haul lumber. I miss that Tacoma. All the other trucks I've had a host of problems, with that GMC being the worst.

All three of my trucks above went to 170K miles or more. The Chevy was at 225K when I sold it. They guy I sold it to still has it and it's around 250K now.

I'll grant you fit and finish on the japanese trucks -- and maybe even overall "quality" -- but not longevity. If you maintain a Ford or Chevy full size truck it'll pretty much go forever in my experience.
Small trucks are different. Rangers / S10s are crap compared to the old Toyota SR5(?) pickups.

I would say it really depends on the truck and how you use it. For example, if I owned or worked on a farm, I would probably go with a Ford F series. Since I don't own a farm or pull a large boat, my current truck of choice is a 2006 Dodge Dakota 4 door. When I was looking at trucks in that size, it was closer to what I wanted then the other ones. Plus the dealer through in a spray on bed liner and step rails.
