Wow!
Watching it now.

Mr.Maduro
01-15-2009, 01:53 PM
It was on its way to Charlotte. Pilot said he hit a flock of Geese and chose to bring it down in the river.

Blueface

People are still in the plane.
They have yet to open the doors?

They have yet to open the doors?

Not sure, they said people were spotted standing on the wing. not sure if they were passengers or rescuers???

smart, fast-acting pilot, could have been so much worse

Blueface
01-15-2009, 01:59 PM
....and to think of all the flights I took last year......
....and to think how I just ignored and never paid attention to the "your seat bottoms can be used as flotation devices".......

Scary.

That pilot is a "real life" hero.
Amazing to pull that off.

watching it as well

Mr.Maduro

If it had to happen anywhere, I couldn't think of a better place for immediate response!

Blueface

Patrick,
This thing is sinking fast.
People are still on board it seems.

Well that was just dismissed.
It seems they got passengers off.

Linus
01-15-2009, 02:04 PM
Whoa. Good for him. Definitely a smart move and does make me nervous about the amount of flying I do each year.

Mr.Maduro

Another report (NY1) just said its still floating. Water temp is 42*

Blueface

One of the passengers is being interviewed on CNN.

Says they all got off.

Knowing CNN, they probably found and paid someone...

I hope DrMRS doesn't see this story. I was just flying US Air on the east coast earlier in the week.

Thoughts go out to all the passengers....

Blueface
01-15-2009, 02:10 PM
Fox just stated they are waiting to confirm but have indications all are survivors and all off.

Whole lot to go in this year so far but I nominate that pilot for hero of the year for now.

Mr.Maduro
01-15-2009, 02:12 PM
Plane keeps floating downstream....South...

Glad to hear this is having a happy ending for all onboard. :tu

Blueface

Plane keeps floating downstream....South...

They have it strapped and held by tug boats.
No way they can let that plane head south, specially towards the Verrezano Narrows Br.

Blueface

The way they have it strapped and the size of the tug boat next to that plane, that thing is not going anywhere. That, coupled with the pilot's amazing job of gently laying it down on the river without damage to the fuselage appears to be the saving grace. They are saying he had no engines. He glided. Not sure how valid that is but that just makes it even more incredible they all survived.

+1

+2, unless there is another pilot that is able to miss the geese all together!

Mr.Maduro
01-15-2009, 02:22 PM
The plane is now almost completely submerged!

Blueface
01-15-2009, 02:22 PM
Back half of the plane is under water already.
Only part afloat is the front area that is being held up by the tug.

Blueface
01-15-2009, 02:26 PM
They are now confirming both engines went down.
That pilot indeed glided that plane down.

Just saw this on yahoo; horrifying. At least there don't seem to be fatalities.

Other than the birds. Expect a protest from those wastes of skin at PETA.:r

Mr.Maduro
01-15-2009, 02:29 PM
Passenger saying that Pilot said "Brace for impact, we're going down!" They smelled gas on the plane after the engines blew!

Blueface
01-15-2009, 02:33 PM
OK folks, this is huge.
FAA has confirmed ALL passengers have survived.
Miracles do happen!!!

148 passengers plus 6 crew members.

Kreth
01-15-2009, 02:34 PM
Kudos to the ferry crews as well. Apparently they were on the scene within minutes.

Listening on CNN.com Wow

Blueface
01-15-2009, 02:37 PM
FAA just confirmed pilot lost both engines.
Was nevertheless able to turn the plane around and prepare it for a water landing while gliding.

Blueface
01-15-2009, 02:39 PM
OK,
We need to lighten things up now that God was with all those folks and are now dry and safe.
The plane can be replaced.
The pilot and the emergency folks are true heroes.

Now, for the humor.
They say a flock of geese caused it.
Some say it was a flock of these things.

You too would crash if that crap was coming at you.

How can a Bird Phuck up a Jet Engine? I'm not a rocket scientist but cmon you would think an engine would shred the little tweety

Many documented cases of birds messing up engines on planes really badly.

Right, but how does that happen? Engines are powerful. Birds are not. It must have something to do with the collision speed

They are holding it afloat as I guess the NTSB is not going to let that plane go down only to have to pull it out later.
It seems it is being towed to a spot it can be recovered.

That is an amazing story... I am very thankful for that pilot's skills.

Yea I've had a bird go through the engine of my helicopter before. It really messes up your compressor blades. No compressed air no engine. Glad everyone is ok. Airbus is know for their ability to glide and make good emergency landings.

Tell you what, it has sparked my curiosity.
Perhaps some BOTL pilots can expand.
I would think it impacts the blades on the engines which in turn cause the engine to shred as result of its own debris being sucked in.

I think that's it Carlos although yes would like to hear from some aviation experts

We're not talking about a robin here, either. He hit a flock of geese.

Well, there is our answer. Interesting those small things can bring a big "bird" down.

Thanks.

Article said that striking a 4 pound bird at 200 mph had a force of 6 tons. Those geese go upwards of 15 pounds. :hn

Probably more than one bird. If you go through a flock and suck in several birds under take off(full power) conditions its possible to knock a blade off. And once one blade goes its over..

Heres what happens when a blade lets go..

For those that lived the 60's or 70's, if they thought that was crazy, the freaking 80's were nuts with groups like this.
I saw them a while ago on that VH1 show where they try to get bands together again for one show but the two brothers that found this group despise each other. Good thing.:r:r:r

almost looks like they are walking on water outside the plane. The reports that I heard were that most got on the ferry w/o even getting wet.

Let there be no doubt this pilot is a hero.

First off, he is a former US Fighter Pilot with the Air Force.
Next, he landed that plane safely with no lives lost.
Lastly, he walkedd the plane TWO times, back and forth, to make sure no one was left onboard and was the last to leave the plane.
That man is amazing!

The whole thing is very scary, and hits home a bit...

I flew US Airways out of Charlotte (the destination of the crashed plane) just TODAY

Mad props due to the pilot for the safest landing possible!
