What do you guys think of picking up Shaun Alexander - ex-MVP running back? 1-year @ league minimum?

tsolomon
10-15-2008, 02:48 PM
Shaun might be a good pickup, but it doesn't sound like he will be getting much work until he takes some hits in practice. Now replacing Brooks the punter with Plackemeier should be a real plus. :tu

Anyone has got to be better than Brooks. What a joke that was. You don't keep a guy on just because he was a high draft pick and you're paying him an a$$load of money. you keep him on because he's good at his job. This kid has the worst avg punting distance in the league...

We'll have to see how much they wind up using Alexander. Betts made for a nice change of pace back from Portis.

I love the team but hate the ownership. Another wasted draft pick released this week. We used a 5th round pick on a punter...A PUNTER!!! That could have been a special teams players, or someone to fill our D-line. Until Vinne C is fired, this team is doomed.

Dear god, anyone was better than Brooks. I would be better than Brooks. I didn't think Snyder would let it get to that point, but putting someone on the field just because you are paying them a lot of money is really crappy football. What are the chances Cerrato learned his lesson. Or are we doomed to hire Matt Millen as our next GM

They have the tools, just not the strategy in my opinion. They are way too conservative on offense and the plays they choose are easily recognized by the defense before the ball is snapped. Its nice to rely on the run especially when you have someone like Portis, but he can't do everything, and when he gets shutdown, the entire team (coaches included) looks lost. They think that 7-10 points are enough to win in this league and when they have a lead, they leave everything up to their defense. Imagine how many games they would've lost over the last few years if it wasn't for their defense playing thei hearts out.

They need to have their offensive playbook completely revamped and a health offensive line. Campbell is getting hit, hurried, and sacked way too much. :fl

I believe we all got sucked in early in the season with the success that they were having early. This is a team that had some weaknesses entering the season, but when they began winning, I really started to believe that maybe Zorn was the guy to get things back on track.

Before your time, but, years ago the Skins had a running back named Larry Brown that WAS the Skins offense. Pure hard nosed runner that played hurt, destroyed his knees, would smash opponents in the mouth with his punishing runs. This is where I've seen the Skins "evolve" their offense to this year. Run the heck out of Portis and then hope to get some support from the receivers along the way. The man is being beat up, terribly and there is no solid support behind him. Betts and Campbell are tied as the second leading rushers on the team! The NFL is a league that requires teams to have two solid runners. I'm not sold totally on Jason Campbell as being the answer, but, I think he progressed a bit under Zorn. Perhaps consistency in coaching may help him....but, I'd still be shopping. Another solid receiver in hopes that the Skins could balance out their offensive attack a bit more. I agree on opening up the playbook, but only when there is solid support at the key positions. Most importantly....the O-line has got to open holes and punish the defenses. The NFC East, week end and week out faces some solid defensive lines and putting together a solid line is essential, otherwise, it doesn't matter what backfield you have.

This past weekend was a perfect opportunity with the Giants and the Boys losing! Dammit!!!

silentjon....I don't believe I singled out moss or portis as being involved in legal problems. The attempt at HUMOR was in response to Made in Dade's comments about getting more Hurricanes on the Skins roster. In fact, I put the smiley with the cigar beside the comment. Again....HUMOR.

However, i probably don't need to provide an education on the number of present and former Miami Hurricanes that have been involved in an extensive number of off AND on field incidents. But, we could start this year with the 31 Miami and FIU players that were suspended in what has been referred to by many as the "Thug Brawl." We could go back over the years where Sports Illustrated called for the shut down, 12 years ago, for the football program to be shut down for being out of control. Some of Miami's finest have blessed the NFL---including Michael Irvin and his many off the field escapades or Ray Lewis and his murder charges, or the recruit Willie Williams whose Arrest Record was longer than his High School Transcript. The program have never been known for its virtues of cleanliness....but, I will say, Shannon has run a much cleaner program and seems to be righting the ship from its many years of bad behavior.

Again....the attempt at humor was apparently lost in the translation. Sorry you didn't get it.

I get it was a joke, but I still take objection towards the term thug.

1) The FIU-Miami brawl was indeed a black-eye for Miami. However, they have been other brawls in college football - Clemson and South Carolina for one.
2) Willie Williams was the number one ranked defensive recruit in 2004 and recruited by most major colleges (including Florida, Florida State and Auburn). While enrolled at Miami, he had zero legal issues. They same can't be said once he transferred.
3) Indeed, both Lewis and Irvin had their share of issues in the NFL. But maybe we should also call West Virginia Thug U for Adam Jones and Chris Henry.
4) The amounts of legal incidents at Miami have been minimal in recent time. The same can't be true for a lot of college football programs. Florida State and Penn State come to mind.

I get it was a joke, but I still take objection towards the term thug.

I have a very good friend from high school whose sister had a "reputation" for being the go-to girl if you wanted to lose your virginity or to get a little action. My friend has felt tremendous embarassment over the years for the things that his sister did. In fact, we all kind of feel sorry for her because she has been stuck for more than 30 years with that reputation and at each reunion, inevitably someone brings her up.

A reputation, once earned, is hard to overcome. Shannon has done a decent job of keeping players under wraps the last couple years. There are a lot of great players that came out of the U that were role models for others...but, they get lost in the reputation that the U earned. Of course, anytime you have a FIU-Miami brawl, the natural tendency is to bring back past behaviors and history of schools and individuals. To be upset about the term "Thug Brawl" is an issue that you'll have to take up with the media. They coined the phrase....the rest of us just use the term. In fact, if I recall correctly, wasn't the Sportscaster that broadcast the FIU-Miami also fired for his comments supporting what was occurring on the field by the Miami players??? If I remember correctly....he was also a Miami grad.

Here in NC, Chuck Amato began building the reputation at NC State of bringing in the "thug" players with attitudes and questionable behaviors. He came out of the FSU program that often times lacked character, as well. He wanted the players to have a get in your face attitude and not back down or be intimidated by the opposing players. With all that, came the associated problems, as well...on and off the field. To have Tom O'Brien as the new coach at NC State come in and rebuild the program with discipline and hard work is a joy to watch.

But again....as much as you may want the reputation to go away, Miami earned its reputation over the years and its going to take awhile to remove the stigma associated.

I had VIP passes for the first practice yesterday. Seeing those guys up close is amazing, they are just freaks of nature. Campbell looked good, as did Colt. The wr looked very strong, however our secondary looked pathetic. They were getting beat left and right on the field, it could be a very very long year if those problems continue.

There's no doubt this team has talent, and a defense that is still top notch (despite giving up 19 to the Lions.) I'm even willing to give Zorn a little more time. Honestly, I don't know what else to expect from a team whose players and coaches are constantly sabotaged by the ownership. Dan Snyder is the Al Davis of the east coast. Until he hires a real GM and let HIM build a real team, nothing will change.

Maybe I should follow the example of that guy who wrote letters to the front office of all 32 NFL teams asking why he should root for them.

I like Jim Zorn. I was in Seattle when he was their starting QB and always enjoyed watching him play. I thought he did a serviceable job as the QB coach for Seattle.

All that being said, I just don't think Zorn was ready to be a head coach in the NFL. I think he would have been a good offensive coordinator - which is what he was originally hired to be - and that he would have gained valuable knowledge and experience as an offensive coordinator. But he was just not ready to be a head coach and this may cost him any opportunity down the line to be a head coach with another team.

Sorry, have to really disagree with you on this one. The blame for this season falls totally at the feet of the front office. The idiotic owner Dan Snyder and his yes-man lackey Vinne Cerrato. Neither apparently have the first clue how to run a successful football organization. It comes down to the basics, O-line and D-line. Not flashy. Not headline grabbing. Not shiny new toys. Fundamentals. If those pieces are not put in place first, the coach has nothing to work with. It doesn't matter if you are Peyton Manning or Drew Brees, if you have a d-lineman in your face within 3 seconds of taking the snap, you're not doing jack with the ball. The running back has nowhere to go, the receiver's routes don't have time to develop. You are well and royally fcuked every single down. Until the front office realized this or is replaced by a new front office, the skins will go no-where. I wonder how long it will take for Snyder to realize how much value he is destroying by failing to build a club that is at least competitive. How long he thinks that most profitable franchise in the league will last if the fans stop showing up and stop buying merchandise because the team sucks and they don't want to be seen wearing it's name.

There is a lot of truth to what you are saying. You see it in high school football every year where a school has a good coaching staff and no real talent and they lose. The point I was trying to make is that Zorn didn't have the coaching experience I think a NFL head coach should have. I think he could be a good head coach down the line but not in the Redskins organization as it is now.

I just don't get the Campbell hate. The problem is obviously the line. I don't care if it's Peyton back there, with that line, he will get sacked, pressured into interceptions, it's just gonna be bad. Campbell is a good QB, when he has the 3-4 seconds to make a play that any serviceable line would give him.

:tpd:

That was the most painful game of the year to watch. The Giants d-line made our guys look like high school players. JC didn't even have time to set his feet, and there was no way we were running between the tackles. I hang my head in shame.

The bright spot is that London Fletcher got me a ton of fantasy points, as he has all season, to help secure a victory in my league. And I'm only partially kicking myself for starting Ganther over Mendenhall--Ganther put up a respectable 10 or so. Who cares if it was late in the game against their 3rd stringers? :cali I got lucky. Unlike our boys last night.

Oh, and wtf is that unsportsmanlike call going against Haynesworth? The one that jump started another NYG TD drive. Did none of the zebras see Jacobs and his buddies in there throwing punches like Mike Tyson?

I have no problem with that, as long as they get someone who can play on the O-line once in a while. Oh, and I think we might need a new running back, ours is getting awfully close to 30 and only plays 12-14 games in a good season. Might need a new FS as well, been seriously lacking there since Sean Taylor. Then maybe we can talk about the receiving corp?

Why do I feel like nothing has changed or will change with this franchise? It's Dan Snyder, once again, picking up the shiny new toy instead of buying the building blocks we need to win. I had been on the season ticket waiting list for about 10 years and they called me this spring to buy tickets. I turned them down for exactly this reason. I won't spend any more of my money on this team, and I think will be abandoning them if they don't prove to me that they can at least pretend to try and build a winning team.

If I had taken them, I would have gone to 3-4 games year, probably the divisional games, and put the rest on stubhub. But no matter, I'll just wait until my name comes up on the giant's waitlist and buy those and sell 7 of the 8.

What I would like to say is, "Congratulations on getting Jammal Brown from the Saints."

What I'm really saying is thank you for taking this Haynesworth wannabe off of our hands. Do you really think the Saints would have sent him to Washington for a future draft pick if they thought he was worth anything more?

Don't know if I can take an entire season of games like that--my poor heart....

Overall, I liked a good bit of what I saw last night. The play calling on both sides of the ball was consistently good, Trent Williams is a beast, McNabb is still mobile, the D is still "The D!", Portis has staying power (much better in the second half,) and our place kicker is accurate if the snap is good  Now if we could only do something about our punter and find some WRs who could catch, we might put it all together!

Not doing too shabby at this point. 3-2 and 2-0 in the division is not something I would argue with, especially with the way the league is looking this year. No truly dominant teams, looks like it's really open to anyone.

I love the skins, but dear god they are inconsistent. One week untouchable, then the next jokes. Curious to see if they will pick up McNabb's contract at year end... One side its a long time with a lot guarenteed, on the other, they have the money to spend, and who would replace him?

I turned them down when they called me for season tickets last year. Been on that waiting list about 8-9 years. I told them I won't spend another dime on this team until the a$$hat owner proves that he can get his act together and stop running the organization like it's a fantasy team.

Saw some encouraging things in preseason, even the local press has been relatively favorable about the coaching scheme & team chemistry so far. Let's see if they can pull it off in the opener tomorrow--probably gonna be emotional at the start, with all the 9/11 tributes they have planned pre-game.

Well they actually pulled ou the win against NY, I am very happy!
Grossman got extremely lucky on a couple bad passes that didn't get picked.
He will do well if he can keep from thowing picks.
Also if our O-line can protect him. I was very impressed with our 3rd & 4th down D!
Exciting season, havn't been excited in a few years. Our players seem to be playing as a team. And that tip six the rookie pulled off was magical. I hate Eli!

Well we held the lead and secured the win, but it was scary. Grossman is just not the answer. I am so impressed with the rest of our team, but Grossman scares the chit out of me when the game is on the line. Maybe he will become consistent over the bye week?:r

In the 4Q I had just texted a buddy of mine saying, "It's Dallas all over again," when the announcers started picking up that same vibe: stupid defensive mistakes, bonehead penalties, Rex's inconsistency.... fortunately they hung on and we got the W :banger but it really should not have been that dicey.

And as a bonus we got to enjoy the tail end of the Dallas-Detroit! game :noon:noon

What a great bye week, NY & the Eagles both loose!
Couldn't have been beter!
We should be able to beat the Eagles this week as long as Vick doesn't rush for 200 yards.
And Grossman needs to put up some early points and keep scoring as opposed to last week when they just stalled on offense.
