Just to get things settled a bit in our new home... a question whose answer helps us to get to know the smoker behind the pipe:

What's your favorite pipe shape? And what makes you reach for those shapes more often than others in your stable?

I'll start:

I like bulldogs. My favorite four pipes have three bulldogs in the lineup. My favorite meer is a bulldog.

Why? They are sturdy... no frilly crap or wispy stems to break off or crack easily. They don't tend to be really flashy... even the expensive ones don't look like much until you look closer. Grain and fit separate a great bulldog pipe from a mediocre one. It's just sort of a comfort shape for me.

Plus I attended the University of Georgia. Go Dawgs! :D

Next?

Boy Bobby... you sure struck a nerve with this one. I'm sure everyone if sitting and thinking it out before they leap to the keyboard. Either that or the whole bulldog/UGA thing scared everyone off.

Fact is I have five bulldogs and I smoke them regularly; four are straight (Peterson, Amphora and two Sasieni 4-dots) and one is half bent (another Sasieni 4-dot). What you said. They're solid, perfect in the hand (as Root said - where IS the Rooter? -) they are the original ergonomic design) and no BS.

I seem to have one of everything else - like them all I guess.

I like the apple with a slight bend, Bjarne makes some that perfectly exemplify this

Gotta love a nice pup . . . be it a bulldog or a rhodesian. I own a few and a couple of them I didn't dedicate to latakia blends, so they are still in my regular rotation....lol. Fine smokers, the lot of them. My favorite pipe, bar none, is a '68 Dunnie bull. (Thanks Chad)

That being stated, it's not what catches my fancy as of late, when looking for PAD satisfaction. Rusticated billiards seem to grab my attention lately . . . slender, simple and sleek . . . as well as many of the slender, flowing shapes of many of today's high end carvers . . . most of which I cannot afford.

Man cannot live on bread (or bull) alone . . . such is the alure of the hobby.

I'm really enjoying the bulldog I picked up recently. Like others have said, great fit/feel in the hand and sturdy design.

The lovat shape for me. Don't have any reason why it is my favorite shape, it just appeals to me.

I've been digging pots too.... need to buy another one soon.

Probably a bent bulldog. I definitely own the most of those. My eye is drawn for them for aesthetic reasons and they just seem to feel good in my hand and mouth, too.

I tend to like bent bulldogs as well. I tend to like a pipe that is easy to hold in my mouth without clenching and straights are a little too much work for me to accomplish this.

I have a few pipes, nothing fancy... When I look to buy a pipe it always narrows down to bent bulldogs...

Bulldogs mostly, but I've started noticing more volcanoes and wanting to get more of those.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to ask the question too. As for myself, I love princes. A smallish apple shaped bowl and a ¼ bent stem. I've been finding myself looking at a lot of bulls lately, too; squat half bent ones.

I like a sitter/poker style mostly. I like that I can set it down and do something while I'm smoking.

Not a pipe smoker but if I was I would smoke a "Devil Anse" style pipe whatever it is.

This seems to be a popular shape right now. I don't know how I feel about the forward leaning bowl. It's kinda weird.

From what I read it's angled like that as to not burn your nose with a short stem.

Ah ok. That makes sense I guess. It's just so stubby. Are you attracted to stubby things, Mike? :D

But seriously, why don't you pick one up and give it a shot? There are a lot of great tobaccos to be discovered and it is a nice change of pace from the cigars from time to time. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than cigars too.
