Yah man it's an SV650. The pipe you're talking about on the bottom right is a Savinelli, I think it's a hybrid b/t a billiard and Lovat, it's huge though.
My dad had a 2001 Ducati Monster 900. That thing could be scary, I hit 85 in first gear getting on the freeway once on that bike. My dad sold it for a huge profit so i couldn't blame him.
I would post a picture of my tins but it's pretty pathetic at this point.

i started with 2 ceramic jars of some goopy aromatics called "Black Forrest" and "Peach Cobbler". your cellar can't be that bad, gotta start somewhere.
It's good baccy there just isn't much of it, I got a couple coming in the mail. When they get here I'll post them up.

This stuff is very good!! I also got AJ's VaPer, that I think I like a little better though. It seems to be stronger in the perique dept. However I haven't gotten to sit and truely enjoy the anni kake completely yet. I let one bowl dry out way to much, and the second attempt got interupted and I wasn't able to return to it. I will get back to it though!

The smooth bamboo is a Bari, danish (paid about $55 on Ebay, unsmoked), she's quite small (super small for a bari), smokes great, it's like a straight Zulu shape, a bit like Cutty.
The poker is a Stanwell no.207, (about $70) they're big and they do them in all sorts of finishes.

I'm just another idiot Escudo lemming, running scared when JR says they're not selling it anymore. (Greg mocks me when JR lets me down.) I don't know anything about Dunhill brands that hasn't already been bantered around for the last six months or more. All I know is this: it has been hard to get, the price has jumped and, if they stopped making Escudo (the way it is) today, I'm good for a few years.
It happens that I like the lonely little tin of London Mixture a lot - very nice flavor and easy-easy to smoke - but there are a couple of other english blends I favor and I wouldn't miss the Dunhill version terribly. Fact is, I only had two tins and just sent one to a new piper so he could try a nice-and-easy english tobacco.

Penzance and Margate are two of my favorites. :)
I have heard really good things about Stonehaven. Never had it, but I believe it is a Va or VaPer.
Either way, they make some good quality tobac.
I like heavy Latakia blend but in my opinion Penzance is carried by it's reputation. I participated in a blind review on ICC and almost everyone gave Penzance so-so to bad reviews. On the other hand I know a ton of people who love it, just never appealed to me.

There was obviously post processing done in the photo, though it was more in line with a target of color accuracy than color manipulation.
One possible idea is that this Penzance looks lighter because of the dark tones surrounding it and the lighting setup. The black point is set to the black in the stem, so the blacks in the photo should be true.
I will look at my Penzance when I get home and the photo again on my calibrated monitor and tell you how far (if any) it is off.

Looking at it on my monitor and comparing it to the real thing, it is slightly darker. It looks like in post processing I must have lightened it up a bit. I didn't have it at my desk for reference like I would have if I was shooting a product for a job or something.
Though, it is more of a dark brown than a black, at least the sample I have (which is from the tin, obviously).

Here are a couple shots of flakes of penzance from my jar. Bought from the B&M in Oct '08.
Both of these are just the flakes laying on my desk with my desk lamp over the top of them. No editing of either other then to resize the pic.
1st one is with just regular indoor light flash on a 5mp sony cybershot camera. Still looks alot darker with alot less lighter streaking then the one MFM posted:
http://home.comcast.net/~fuscat/pipes/pez1.jpg
Second one, one more shot, no flash. Pretty much looks just like it does to the eye laying there on my desk. MUCH darker!
http://home.comcast.net/~fuscat/pipes/pez2.jpg
Very interesting! Perhaps that tin is fairly young? I know the B&M had the bulk bag that mine was from open for quite some time in a jar on the counter (months). And this sample I have had at my house for the last 4.

Looking at the first pic under better lighting, I would say that my Penz is pretty close to that.
The darkness in the bottom pic I would say is due to underexposure and poor lighting.
The nature of the lighting I took my pic in was more of an ambient, warm light which will increase the perceptions of browns. I some of the focus was on getting the baccy light enough to see good texture too. I also combined four or five photos to get a precise depth of field, so the in-focus parts and increased texture may make it look lighter.
Or is may just be younger. Tin was bought in Nov. and opened in Dec.
I have three more tins, so we'll see what the next one looks like. Gotta smoke through this stuff first though. :)

None taken at all. I like trying to piece together a puzzle. And while the photo turned out pretty much as I had intended, it is nice to get feedback, particularly if it isn't an accurate representation of the baccy. :D

For comparison purposes, here is the picture I posted:
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p125/zarquonfrood/Tobac/Penzance.jpg
And here an unprocessed jpeg from one of the RAW (digital negative) files the above photo was made from. This jpeg was taken one stop underexposed from what the camera read as correct exposure.
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/7614/tlm1039se4.jpg
You can see how the tone enhancements have altered the tobac color a bit. I used a WB setting of around 5000 or 5500k, so it is slightly warmer than what the camera AWB selected, somewhere around 4000k.

there are a couple cuban pipe tobaccos, but most ppl who've smoked it (and judgement i trust) say it sucked.
there are other types of tobaccos, though, and hundreds of blends in each type. so, if you fell down the "Virginia Slope", as opposed to the "Balkan Slope", then yes, there are different slopes.

Only one slope, the hoarding slope. lol you can never have enough!
With that said there are two slopes, tobacco and pipe.
With pipe tobacco being relatively cheap compared to cigars, in my opinion anyway. You will buy multiples of tins and tobacco in bulk. Why buy 1 tin when you can buy 3 or more? Why buy 2 ounces, when they sell it by the pound?
There is also the pipe slope, which if not watched is pricey.

02-11-2009, 08:18 PM
Nope haven't figured that yet. I smoke about probably 2 bowls a day. I don't smoke everyday of the week either but atleast 5 out of 7 days. On the weekends I might sneak in an additional bowl each day if I'm lucky. I guess 2bowls a day is a fair for an average. I am guessin at that rate, the 15 or so pounds I currently have on hand would last a good long while!!

Last week I was driving north on I-29 to a job in Council Bluffs IA. While driving I had couple cups of coffee, of course the urge hit and there was no rest stop immediately available. The next exit on the road was Hamburg IA, so I get off the interstate and drive into town to find a gas station. Not seeing one I find a nice antique store so I go in there to use the facilities and figure while there I look around.
I came across a nice pipe rack and 5 nice pipes. Nothing special but for the price I had to get them.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/jkach/IMG_1262.jpg
A couple Dr. Grabow Grand Duke's, a Medico Cavalier, and a "Dr Medico" Cavalier??:D. The top left pipe is marked Medico Cavalier on the bowl but has a Dr. Grabow spade trademark on the stem. But it fits great. I will give a test smoke in a couple days after it dries out from the salt and rum treatment.
The fifth pipe is a Savinelli Punto Oro, 802. The bit is oxidized and has a chip but worth the $7.00 price tag, I think. Savinelli's web site has a price of $25.00 for a new mouthpiece.

jeff, if you are close by Cigar & Tobac on Metcalf Ave, you can swing in there and drop off your pipe to have a new stem put on. i dropped off one of my Nordings, need to call them back to see if it's done. they say the turnaround time is about 3 weeks (which is actually pretty quick). you can also select which type of material you want your stem to be made from: ebonite or acrylic (i believe).
prices are $15-25, depending on type of stem. also, it'll be FIT to your pipe.
just an FYI.
that'll be a great lookin pipe once the bit is fixed.

my last two pipes i acquired... one was strictly by accident, was an ebay auction that i just threw up a snipe bid on, figuring i'd surely be outbid by $75+ bucks... low and behold, i was the 2nd and last bidder on the pipe and the first bidder only put in an initial bid.
Larrysson Pipes "Bun" off ebay for less than half what it was new, only had 4 or 5 bowls of Reiner LGF in it, still bare wood in the bottom of the bowl.

so, i know that place pretty well. actually just called justin last week, a guy on CS was asking where i got the Farnams Reserve that i sent him from and if he could get any more.
Oh, okay. Then yeah, I definitely remember you. I didnt realize you were the same person. Oh, you know if they have any by chance, I'm down to two tins.

only if you kiss Justins ass. he said when they got really low, he and the owner bought the rest... but he told me that it's just a McClellands bulk blend that was pre-aged 10 years. and since they're not getting any more, and aren't selling any more, i don't htink it matters if anyone knows what it is now...

Andrew in fayetteville I can not recommend any. There is a shop in the mall but not my cup of tea. I live outside of fayetteville on the north side of Bragg in southern pines. There is a small shop there with a nice selection of cigar and pipe stuff. Helps that the owner is retired air force.

Yeah, I've been trying to find the bulk version for a while and couldn't remember what it was called. Cool, I'll probably buy some now and do my own aging. Thanks.

Nice pipes Nuero!!! I especially like the Tinskey's and the Sav. churchwarden!
Here are a few pics of some pipes I picked up while visiting Bay City for a funeral for a pipe-smoking patriarch and beloved uncle. He was married to a british woman, and his pipes were from London or London-made from Paul's Cayuga in Flint. My cousin and I smoked a cigar and had some scotch after the funeral and we split up his dad's pipes. I think of 8, I got 3. They are a Barling, a "Finecraft" Made in England and a "Italy 705" lol, the latter two being Paul's Cayuga stamped. (+'oil-cured')
They need to be cleaned and polished and photographed with better light. But I am not sure about "patina"?
