Feels ironic seeing this again, stuff like this just happened with the other forum site I'm on.

It was a lot uglier and just ... real nasty all over, still not done though.

All breaks down members make a site. Not that I ever had problems on the other site, this site has a lot warmer feel, as I'm getting to know everyone more I feel more welcome and equal here :).

That would explain all of the "Hey, it's almost my birthday, let me post a countdown" and "Boo hoo, I'm only 18, and CI says I need to be 21 to order" posts. I was so darn sick of those! I thought cigars were for grown-ups, which in my mind, is not just a number, but also a mindset. If your post contains the phrase, "My mom won't let me [fill in the blank]" maybe you should wait a while before you pursue this great hobby.

RIP, Club Stogie. It was there that I met all of the people that I got to meet in person at the Epic Ybor Herf, as well as the Florida guys that I have herfed with in person, and the Tulip Twins, who I hope to meet in person soon.

Fellers, I haven't been around as long as a lot of you guys and I certainly appreciate your frustration with all that happened. But I just think it's a bit presumptuous to think that the things we appreciated at the original CS are now gone forever and maybe even a little sad that you've completely written off the place and are looking forward to its demise. I think it makes complete sense to be concerned when your 'home' is (I wouldn't say taken away from you but) 'changed' but that's just my :2 and well, what do I know. I've been anxious though, like you guys, to see the change. It'll be an interesting week! Oh, and don't get me wrong, I love CA and all that the Amazing 11 have done to create this great place.

I feel like the "Pimp Stick" is going to be the #1 cigar on Puff.com. Based on what I'm seeing so far, I have no desire to be a part of that site any longer. The spirit and feel of CS definitely faded when everyone left, but the PUff.com "feel" so far seems totally different.

Never really "got" the brotherly intent of buying the #'s 3,6 and 16th largest cigar sites, merging them and creating the... # 3 largest cigar site. I pared this down to home in on the part I wanted to answer to. I don't think anyone is really looking forward to the demise. What the f**k...

I only plan on doing 2 things at a hotel: sleeping and humping. Luxury? Why.

5 star dining to me is a steak that I grill on my balcony and enjoy while watching The Simpsons.

Yeah, sounds like an elitist fanboy club now. I guess since I normally stay at Holiday Inn expresses when I travel, have a 4 dollar Ronson lighter, haven't gotten around to buying a yacht yet, don't even own a watch, rarely go out to a 5 star restaurant, drive a Nissan, like beer better than wine, that i'm not welcome anymore. I just ain't living the puff lifestyle fellers!

I am curious about the best cigars part though. This being my first visit to Puff, I stumbled on this and laughed so hard I damn near blew beer out my nose!

Gurkha makes some of the rarest and most unique cigars on the market. Their use of some of the world’s best aged tobacco puts them at the top of the industry and with limited production runs, each cigar is rolled with precision and detail, ensuring a strict level of quality control.

Quite the change from Club Stogies old no snob policy. I agree with borndead that it's a complete 180.... the "no snob" thing and more casual atmosphere were some of the reasons why I joined. This sounds like they are trying to cater to the high-rolling crowd that actually tries to live the GQ lifestyle verbatim. Ugh.
Wow! Puff is a horrible looking site :pu
I know... that fish and the mixed fonts on the banner are weirdly contrasting and rough looking. There isn't much I like about the way the site looks, and I feel I'm being impartial here....

I guess I'm sort of "lucky" in that I wasn't a CS member long enough to grow this strong attachment to the site.... I joined in October and a couple days later the bomb dropped. I will still miss it though. :sad

I just noticed the flag at half mast at the top of CA. In memory of CS. Nice.

Good catch! (And nice move by the mods!)

Shall we deliver three volleys with Blazers and blow "Taps" with smoke signals?

"Like the perfect cigar, the smoker’s lifestyle is a rich and well-blended mixture of the all the finest ingredients. At Puff Lifestyle, we discuss the finer things in life: the most luxurious hotels, the finest wines, 5-star dining, the hottest wheels, insane watches, really cool lighters, hand carved cedar humidors, and of course – the best cigars. Come, live the life of a true cigar connoisseur. Puff Lifestyle – the sky is the limit."

Sounds like an online version of Mr. Marvin Shanken

If they had done *ANY* research about CS before they bought the site, it would have been clear that CS was *NOT* about any of this elitist BS. Thanks Team of 11 from saving us from a-holes like this!

I compare what is happening over there to what happens at a military unit when there is a change of command or a presidential inaugration.

You're still a family but it just doesn't feel the same until everyone either get used to it or is transferred to a new unit where you have no expectations.

Doubt it. If he cared what any of us had to say he wouldn't have turned it into that ugly ad ridden mess it is now.

The new layout if fugly with a capital F. I will suggest however, that anyone here that still goes over there download FireFox adblock addon. Does wonders for that site now! Not like it matters much for me now though, today was my first and last visit to puff :r

So the end has arrived. So long Club Stogie. Welcome Puff.com. No cigar site is perfect. We find them and become addicted to one or another based upon primarily the people that hang out on them not the look and feel or even the intent of the site owners.

Over time, we all learn a little more about the nature of public on line cigar sites if we pay attention. They differ in fundamental ways. From my perspective there are 3 basic types...

1. Sites started and operated by folks in the cigar business. Pretty straightforward. You know that Fuentes, a Magazine etc owns the site and your expectations are set as such.

2. Sites that started out as hobby boards and evolved into a blend of hobby and revenue producing. CS, CL, CR, CP etc fall into this mold. (All the sites bought or attempted to be bought) The desired vibe is the "community" vs the business of the board. The business is in the background seen only by the owner. When you first join one teh "community spirit" disguises the business side. Over time you gain an understanding of the lay of the land. We know the guy that owns it and know that the site is a passion vs a business and appreciate the fact that ads etc help offset the cost of our homes. Interesting that these are the targets for acquisition as they are primed for moving to "the next level". We get rude awakenings when the hobby board owner decides to cash in on "his hobby/our community".

3. Hobby boards. Fall into 2 categories. Ones that started from scratch with no "family" to start them up and migration based boards.. like here. Most of the from scratch ones die off, very few make it. Seems like longer term folks tend to migrate to these types of boards in general as human nature typically gets in the way of brotherhood somewhere along the way on commercially oriented sites. The fist time they put up an ad they become less of a hobby and more of a business to some small degree and begin the evolution or brotherhood to cash cycle.

New hobby boards get started when there is change in existing boards more often than not. Typically in the past, it has been falling outs among st former friends that leads to creating these new boards. This is a new situation ... Kmart comes to the cigar boards kind of thing.

It's another of the many "slippery slopes".. money. One that is hard to gain objective brotherly traction on once a cigar board owner begins to slide.

I'm sure Mr. Caputo will do fine, make lots of money and flip the thing he builds to a "cigar entity" at some point in time. Lot's of new smokers who do searches and they will be right there at the top for them to find "Puffworld". Difference might be that unlike other boards, there might not be longer term knowledgeable folks to provide "ongoing content" that facilitates personal evolution and growth for new members. Could turn into Cigarboardgateway.com where folks quickly move to another board (once they know boards exist at all) that are less commercially tacky.

or.. this is the future and Puff will rule the cigar board universe with "awesome content", "unique visitors", and cool prizes available to everyone who clicks the ads. :D

From a purely technical standpoint, I am impressed at the integration. It could not have been easy, as behind schedule as they were. From an aesthetic viewpoint, it is an embarrassing eyesore. Functionally, it seems to work like a vbullitin app. I don't think it is though. I can easily ignore the banners. I hate the fish and I don't want anything to do with a "Puff Lifestyle".

I take exception with anyone who says this thread is bashing CS....lots of long time "Gorilla" are just expressing the sadness at seeing something they once cherished turned into something....well, different. People who were members there for 5 years or even 5 months want to express their feelings about the change, whether those be feelings of sadness, of anger, or ambivalence. We are all human.

Functionally, it seems to work like a vbullitin app. I don't think it is though.

It appears that vbulletin is still handling the forum portion.
The front page is cnn layout (compare them side by side) with cigar "content" surrounded by ads.
Looks like ads and so forth are driven by shareasale.com and bigresponse.com
Then there is vbSEO providing LinkBacks, URL rewriting, etc...

Since CA was started it was asked by the 11 not to get into any type of CS negativity. I felt this thread could head that way. My comment was meant to have guys think before posting. That was all. I should of not said anything as I am not a MOD. I apologize for that.

I clearly don't have the wisdom to know what is opinion and what is bashing. Case in point, I had posted some of MY opinions in my later days of CS to have them deemed bashing by the new MODs there.

Let the opinions continue! :)

Cross posting is probably going to be an issue between here and there as MrC has taken the position that he owns your words, pictures etc. Not sure how we are going to handle this but for the time being you cross posting Commiteed Pufferfish should post it here first ... to put it in the public domain then "elsewhere" if you desire to do so.

Do it the other way around and we may have to remove MRC's "property" from our site.

Not only that, but I'd be careful about posting photos (taken from puff forum agreement (http://www.puff.com/forums/vb/faq.php?faq=toplevel#faq_puffagreement)):

"2. Picture Posting

2nd Offense: Account Suspension for 14 days

Upon a members second offense, the member will have their account suspended for 14 days. Any attempt to circumvent this suspension by creating extra accounts on the forum will directly lead into a Permanent Ban from the forum.

Well gentlemen... I just made my last visit and paid my respects.

I visited once the other day when it first went up and my initial impressions weren't good. I figured I would give it a couple of days and then go back for a look. I was poking around and clicked on the Puff Lifestyle (or something like that) link where it was talking about the finer things in life being great watches and awesome hotel rooms blah, blah, blah... That did it... It just ain't me!!! I signed off and won't be back. I wish them well it just isn't my kind of place anymore.

To me the finer things in life are much simpler... my family, my friends including all of you, my favorite pair of jeans, my old arse redwings, Jack Daniels, a couple of decent guns, and my cigars.

...the gist of it is someone said they were not going to be a member of Puff.com due to the policy of owning the content, etc. MrC responded by saying that "it is the same language" as the CS sign up agreement.

I was wondering if that was acurate, since it seems like people that were on CS are suprised/upset about it.

For what its worth I am not trying to call anyone here out. It very well might have been the policy (who reads those agreements anyway...you just scroll to the bottom and click whatever). I don't think that it even would have been an issue with the previous site.

Dunno it was a long time ago for me. Dont remember it but wasn't looking for it. Might have been one of those "anticipitory changes" in the brotherly to cashout process mode. The point of comparision I put forth was here vs there not CS vs Puff. We have a concern about being harrassed over "owned content" from cross posting Committeed Pufferfish per my previous post. Feel free to post the thoughts you post here, on the bathrrom wall at your favorite bus station, on your Myspace page, on the Paris Hilton fan blog.... etc. The cities are looking for revenue now though so you might want to post those here first as well. :D

Read their revised rules regarding ads as well. Seems none are welcome unless they are paid for. No more "specials" posted in the retailer forum based upon enforcement of the rule. It's all about the money is my takeaway.

I understand your concerns. I was just wondering, thanks.

FYI -

My user title was swtiched to "Alpha" and then what the mascot is over there. I switched it back to "Alpha Silverback" and it shows as
"Alpha **********".

Nice huh?

For now I am an "Alpha Silver_Back".
