Checked cigaraficionado.com this morning to see if any recent news has been added and I decide to look at the TOP 25 cigars for '08 and looks like they accidently added #1, 2 days early.

My guesses were Rocky Patel Decade, an Opus X, or maybe a Cuban...

Casa Magna Colorado Robusto

I almost spit out my coffee. I mean don't get me wrong this cigar is good but way out of the left field.

Firing one now as we speak:ss
I'll write up a review on it after I'm done

I wouldn't doubt it. The sales of this cigar will sky rocket now.

Did not like this cigar when I smoked it a while back as a sample, way to sweet.

Their top 5 are non-Cuban.

As are 8 of the top 10.

Right.

why is the #2 cigar rated 96 and the #1 is rated lower at 93

If anyone has some, I'd like to try the Robusto. Everywhere I look, places are already sold out as of this morning.

Comes from Fonseca cigars, In all honesty it is like the Joya de Nicaragua slighty milder and smoother.

That sounds tempting for sure...I like JdN cigars, but the flavor is often hidden behind the strength of the stick.

Hell, I'm a sucker!!!

I'd be in on a box split of the Robusto, Churchill or Belicoso. If anyone finds a box, of any of those, and is looking for a split. I'll take a fiver for sure.

Cuban cigar companies cannot pay Cigar Afflictionado for advertising. Therefore, the Casa Magna is the greatest cigar made.

When some say, "The Casa Magna is a great $4 smoke", remember....Cigar Afflictionado doesn't consider price in their rankings...they are saying the Casa Magna is the best current production cigar in the World right now at any price. Gimmie a break. :bs

Sure they are. Cigar Afficianado did a double-blind, reverse hand job, "how much are you going to pay us?", asian massage parlor happy-ending survey. And its just the facts that Casa Magna was the best cigar produced in 2008, I am looking forward to where they end up ranking in history or in the "Cigars of the Decade" issue. :hm

I smoked a belicoso Casa Magna at my B&M about a month ago... eh! It was definitely good for the price (then), and would revisit it. My buddy at the B&M had similiar impressions as I did. Good, not great.

Of their top 10, (I have never had a Sir Winston), I would take the La Aroma de Cuba Ed Esp... can't find the new La Gloria, and to be honest the Padron 80th was a let down, even for a huge 1926 fan...

Actually that is not true for the top 25, here is part of Gordon Mott's explaination:

Casa Magna! I know you’re all surprised. We were too after our initial round of Top 25 tastings. And, then, that cigar just kept holding its spot among the top five cigars. In the end, the other factors—price, availability, intangibles—that we consider when making our final choice proved to be the tipping points in favor of the Casa Magna Colorado Robusto.

I saw that in another thread, you are absolutely correct....see what I get for shooting off my big bazoo without seeing the newest issue! :D

For $5, I will still take a fresh Party Short, though. ;)

but yet he also said in his blog they didn't even know it was a $5 smoke, its all a stroke job by them, if price played a factor for #1 why not #2, 3, 4, and 5?

You could be right. But in the end it gets down to smoking what you really enjoy. If a bunch of people try and like the cigars CA or any other publication puts out in front of the public then they provided a valuable service.

On the other hand (I gotta play Devil's Advocate here, John), if a bunch of people try and don't like the cigars that CA put in the top spots, then they have screwed us over! ;) :r

I can go along with that logic also. However, CA does a lot more for cigar smokers then politicians, goody-two-shoe advocates and for that matter the majority of non-smokers put together. So I like to defend them from time to time.

Not so sure I agree with this year, but haven't tried a Casa Magna yet.

2007 was interesting as well, although a good arguement can be made for the Padron 1926 No 9 as well as the Montecristo #2.

How the heck did the Opus Perfecxion 2 get in there though??? Put the Cohiba maduro 5 in there instead of in 6th place and it is pretty solid for me...

I heard Rod Blagojevich had something to do with the Casa Magna spot this year but need to research further...

What the hell, I just ordered a 5'er of the Belicosos. I couldn't find any robustos.

I just hope they are better than a Cremosa.

Wasn't there supposed to be a review of the cigar in this thread???

By intangibles does he mean advertising budget spent on ads? :r :r The top 25 is an illustration of why I prefer to read ECCJ.

Suppose there would be if people actually had them :ss

I like to see underdogs but it does seem like a bizarre pick.

I smoked one of these the other night courtesy of BeagleOne. He gave it to me and asked for my honest opinion, so I'll give it. It was a decent cigar. Good, but definitely not great. It was very one-dimensional, but the predominant sweet tobacco flavor was pleasant. It got pretty boring toward the end and I let it go out in its last third. I think he said that his experience pretty much mirrored mine.

I appreciate the opportunity to smoke it and can understand why folks would like it for the price. It just didn't seen very inspired or inspiring. The '00 Punch DC I had right afterward was much more satisfying.

Have you watched how they do their reviews? They leave the second half of the stick in the ashtray. How do you enjoy a stick when you miss the best part? I enjoyed the Casa Magna, but it's just a decent stick, nothing remarkable about them at all.

Yeah, I thought that was crazy. Some sticks don't even get good till the second half. And some change all the way down and you miss so much at the nub. But eh, that's why I and most I know take their reviews with a grain of salt. :ss

I was shocked when I saw that. What kind of AFICIONADO smokes like that?

Reminds me of the Castro story, when a fellow Cuban gave him his best smokes and was appalled that Castro only smoke 1/3 of each one and tossed it.

I remember seeing James Suckling canoeing every cigar he smoked in one of his Cuba-blog videos...
