My son has me looking for Westerhall?? Rum, made in Granada. Says it's good, but I haven't run it down yet. Of course, Bama isn't exactly the Mecca for fine spirits!

I haven't tried those Kelly shows, but I enjoy Appleton Estate's 21 year aged. Waiting on my one bright spot of suppliers to get in the new 30 year Appleton.

I'll eventually find some rums other than the standard grades that really need mixers to be accepted!

I really appreciate the link. However, I suffer from a state that is backwards in many ways, One being that they still have dry counties, and thus do not allow shipment of Alcohol into the state. as expected, the site shows they will not ship to Bama! Got a sister in Tennessee (unless they lose home to the economy), so I might be able to have it shipped there. Don't know if I can trust her to keep bottle sealed til I can get it, though:r

Ron

Wife is Venezuelan .... I bought this one in Venezuela for some ungodly amount of money at the time ... 15-20 bucks I think ... when you realize drinkable anejo runs 3-4 bucks a fifth, the Diplimatico I see people liking here around 7-8, and gasoline is 12 cents a gallon .... thats a lot of money.

Short answer, no, we can't get that one here in Radford.

If there is a trip to Venezuela at Christmas, I'll smuggle you back one - I think we were 4-5 bottles over the limit last time, whats another bottle?

:-O

Mark C

I've got a bottle of the Santa Teresa, either got it here in MD or Florida, can't remember.

Nobody mentioned Pampero yet? That's another nice Venezuelan rum, should be pretty readily available too. I think it's similar to Zacapa, but not quite as sweet. I like it better.

Ron del Barrilito 3 Star is one of my all-time favorite rums. I like the dry, lighter style of Puerto Rican rums, this is the best I've had so far.

Rhum Agricole - Neisson, St James, La Favorite, Rhum Clement... all are great, and very different from every other rum you'll ever try. You owe it to yourself to pick one up if you come across it.

El Dorado 15 yr - Great cigar rum, smokey, heavy, full-bodied, stands up well to a heavy smoke.

Gosling's Black Seal - Cheap, available everywhere, delicious. Don't ever buy Meyer's Dark when Gosling's is sitting nearby.

Angostura 1919 & 1824 - I'm really liking these both a lot lately. The 1824 is a little more complex, the 1919 screams 'vanilla', but both are the drier style that I tend to prefer.

Pyrat XO - Not bad, but I have a hard time getting paste the citrusy/orange flavor. Almost seems too 'orangey' to be real. Great on ice though.

10 Cane - Only buy it on sale, but it makes a helluva mojito.

Of the sweet rums, I think I like Diplomatico a touch more than Zacapa, though they're awful close. Can't ever find Zaya (any Zaya), or Centenario in MD.

I'd love to get my hands on some HC, that's one that ain't exactly common around here. Maybe next trip overseas.

Now that there's a rum thread, someone needs to invite Che over here :)

My favorite at the moment is Zaya. I just wish I could compare the Guatemalan with the Trinidadian stuff. I've had both, and liked both, but really don't knwo what the difference was, as it was months between the time that I had them. Even my wife (not a rum drinker) will drink Zaya neat. :D

I've also had and liked Ron Matusalem Clasico.

HC 7 is another good one. Though I have had it side by side with Guatemalan Zaya, and preferred the Zaya. Just suited my palate better.

I know that I'll need to try some of the others that have been listed here, too

Recently tried the new Zaya, I never had the older version, but I was surprised how sweet it was, lots of vanilla... I liked it, but I have a serious sweet tooth, ask my dentist.

Another rum I enjoy is Saliors Jerry, a little SJ with coke and a wedge of lime on a sunny day at the pool.... nice.

A host of great Rums have already been mentioned! I'd like to add a link to some truly great Plantation Rums as well: http://www.plantationrum.com/en/produits.php

The 1998 series (Jamaica, Nicaragua & Grenada) and all worthy Rums, especially the Jamaica, at least IMHO.

If your serious about Rum, you should give all of these a try. You will be amazed at how good they really are!!!

I've got the Trinidad 1993, Jamaica 8 Yr Old (no date on the bottle), and Trinidad 1991. The Jamaica is harsh, but sorta in a good way. I like it on cold nights by the fire, it definitely needs to be chilled or served on ice. The two Trinidad bottles are very different. I think I prefer the 1993, the '91 seems kinda harsh, but in a bad way.

I really got into rum before I went into the Air Force, rum and bourbon actually. But I really enjoyed the original Zaya that I managed to get my hands on, I'll have to try the new stuff when I am allowed to have alcohol in my possession again. I had some original zaya left when I bought my latest trini blend and I could taste at best a minimal difference in flavor the trini is perceptably a hair sweeter on the finish than the original but I think for swapping countries and production they did a amazing job of maintaining the original flavor of the original. I firmy believe, hands down its the best rum available for the money up in my parts. Having sampled all mentioned by poker :2

Question:
The only really good "sipping" rum that I recognize and that I've found in the State Liquor stores up here is Pyrat XO.

So how does Pyrat compare to the rums that you all are raving about here like Zaya, Rhum Barbancourt, Ron Zacapa, etc... Am I missing out on a lot?

Also anyone have a opinion on Rhum Clement? I recently tried some Clement Creole Shrubb which is an orange infused rum-based liqueur and was very good. I'm curious if their premium rum is good stuff, too. http://www.rhumclement.net/main/

Mark C
11-25-2008, 10:57 AM
You're missing out. I find Pyrat to be fairly sweet, so in that way it's similar to Zaya and Zacapa, but the flavors are very different. Pyrat is a little lighter in body, I'd say medium at most, while Zacapa is more full. I get a dominant orange flavor from Pyrat that pushes everything else out of the picture, while Zacapa is more molasses, vanilla, and a little wood. Haven't tried it, but I hear the new Zaya is similar, with much more emphasis on vanilla.

Barbancourt is a different animal altogether. It's not a sweet rum, and the flavors depend on which bottle you buy (i.e. the age of the rum). The older versions are fuller bodied rums with 'darker' flavors, not as bright as the sweet rums.

Rhum Clement is also an entirely different thing, being a rhum agricole from Martinique. That type of rum tends to present more floral flavors, no molasses, little wood, and a medium body. It's a little more complex, and a little more subtle than the 'in your face' rums like Zacapa. If you can find it, grab a bottle.

I am going to have to agree with someone on the first page of this thread....

Matusalem is by far the best Rum I have come across and tasted.

That said, I have seen a bottle of Appleton's 30 yr rum before. I don't know if its better, never tried it....but if I ever see it again I will be getting it and then I will have an opinion. I am betting I will end up changing my answer....not that I am biased or anything

All the talk of Zaya and the vanilla flavor has got me intrigued . I'm a beer guy with probably 20 different beers on hand and I do enjoy Port occasionally . Would the Zaya be a good place for a Rum Rookie to start ? The only other info I can add is that I do like mixed drinks made with rum . All the standard resort concoctions except I've never had a Mojito .

A couple of rums I enjoy...

Brugals, good enough to sip on a regular basis, yet inexpensive enough to serve to folks who aren't picky.

Don Q, Serralles - a good sipping rum, and their crystal is good for mixing

Planters Gold, another good sipping rum.

H Club is awesome, but being illegal, I hide it and horde it.

I despise all of you. Whenever I read a rum thread, for some reason, I drool.
I do enjoy the Guat Zaya, and have tried a couple of the very common other brands listed here, but hope to branch out a bit myself when the itch becomes a scratch.

Note to the rum rookies, however, you want a white or silver rum for Mojitos, not a dark or anejo. One of the Rummies can correct me if I am wrong, though.

A dark rum will work fine if that's what you want/have available. I use lighter/white rums for mixing because they tend to be cheaper, and the complexities of a premium rum tend to get lost in a mixed drink. Kinda like smoking a Siglo VI instead of a yardgar while mowin' the lawn.

So I've read elsewhere from those who have tried both that the Zaya from Guatemala is definitely better than the current one from Trinidad.
Are you saying the Trinidad variety is an excellent rum as well ?

Tried the NC Matusalem for the first time last night and thought it rocked!

My son mentioned that rum to me a few weeks ago, while we were discussing a few different spirits. My son lives in the Chicago suburbs. I believe he said that it was only available in Illinois and a few other mid-west states. I have to laugh, as his description was just the opposite of yours, saying that is was pure rot gut! I guess I'll have to get my hands on some to see for myself!

From what I've read it's about 50/50. Seems like the people who were diehard Zaya whores prefer the old version, but most accept the new one is good, just not AS good. The rest of the crowd who didn't buy Zaya by the case seem to think it's comparable, some say it's hard to differentiate, and some say it's better. Everyone has their favorite, but it seems to me the new Zaya is still considered a good to excellent rum, depending on your tastes.

I got my bottle of Zaya and tried it on the rocks . I'm not real wild about the flavor but it did immediately coat my tongue . Any recommendations as to what I could do to get myself to tolerate the flavor . I didn't get any sweetness from it at all .

Sweet flavors are much more noticeable at warmer temperatures, so use less ice. I like sweet rums like Zaya and Zacapa neat. If that's not your taste, try a single ice cube. If THAT doesn't work, pour it in a glass of coke :D

Speaking of rum's, I'm in Hawaii right now and in Waikiki in the Sherraton hotel there is a bar called Rum & Fire. THis place is flat out unreal. 101 different bottles of rum with some of the most amazing Mai Tai's and Mojito's I've ever had. Not to mention they are pouring Guatemalan Zaya. Were going back tomorrow night, I'll try and get some pictures and update this thread with them.

Been meaning to post about rum, had the chance to try a few new ones over the holidays:

Bacardi 8 - I was pleasantly surprised. A lot more flavor in this one than every other Bacardi I've tried, and for the price, it's really darn good. I'd definitely buy this for mixing or even straight sipping. It's not terribly complex, but that's part of the Puerto Rican style that I like.

Don Q Grand Anejo - I was a little let down by this one. It's good, but tastes young for something labeled 'grand anejo'. Needed ice to cut the burn a bit, and the flavors were somewhat muted. Not bad, but a bit overpriced.

Zaya - I finally got my hands on a bottle. I started looking for one last January, but by then all the local shops had sold out and didn't get any more in until the shift to Trinidad rum. Definitely a strong vanilla flavor in this rum, very smooth, and quite sweet. It reminds me very much of the other Angostura rums, probably closer to the 1919 with a bit more sweetness. I've long been a fan of Angostura though, and I like the vanilla, so I'm very pleased with this one. I have no idea how it compares to the old bottle (can't find it locally, can't order it online...stupid state laws), but I'm happy with this one.

Went by Hi Time Wines today and grabbed a bottle of Zaya (Trinidad) and Zacapa 23. My first of either of these. Had the Zaya tonight with a Monte Edmundo. Boy, the Zaya is a vanilla-fest. It had a tag on it saying "The world's best sipping rum." Maybe so, but the truth is that to me the vanilla overpowered everything else. It reminded me of a vanilla rum my uncle used to drink in his rum and Coke. I will probably not have Zaya while smoking. It probably is a great sipping rum, just not with cigars, at least for me. Of course if you like vanilla then the Zaya would be right up your alley.

I did try the Zacapa 23 afterwards. Now that is more like it. So smooth and much more to my tastes. I am definitely no rum expert, but it was no contest. Zacapa 23 by a mile. :dr :dr

Yeah, I think Pyrat is very similar to Zaya in the sense that it has one dominant flavor. Except with Pyrat, orange is the dominant flavor instead of vanilla. But I don't think the orange is quite as overpowering in Pyrat as the vanilla is in Zaya so I like it much better. Either way, I like the overall balance of Zacapa 23 over both.

Trinidad Zaya sucks compared to the old stuff from Guatemala. I've had them side by side, and I don't notice the vanilla anywhere near as much in the Guat version, which is also appreciably smoother than the Trinidad version. I'm very disappointed with how they screwed up this once top notch rum. :(

I have a rum question for you rum aficinados. I am about to have a friend (over seas) sending me a bottle of zacapa 23 (not avileble her), the cost (shipping included) would be the same as a bottle of el dorado 15 would cost me at the shop her at home.. It seems that both the zacapa and the el dorado are nice rums when reading your posts. Should I go for the zacapa (with the extra hassle with overseas shipping) or would the el dorado be a as good choice as the zacapa?
The plan is that he would send me a bottle of Elmer T. Lee bourbon at the same time. For thoose of you that also like bourbon, is this a good choice, given the price?

To me, the Zacapa 23 would be worth the trouble. But I am not an aficionado nor have I ever had the El Dorado. The Zacapa 23 is GOOD. Not only does it put the other rums I've had to shame (which, admittedly, is not a ton), it puts many other spirits to shame. While I like variety, I find myself constantly wishing I had poured the 23 whenever I have something else.

That said, I was introduced to Legendario Elixur recently. When I find that, it will spend some time as the TOPS for me.

My wife recently gave me a bottle of this, Vizcaya VXOP Cask No. 21. I had never heard of it before and she was turned on to it by one of the guys where I normally buy my rums. It is agricole, made from pure sugar cane and fermented in old oak bourbon barrrels. I like it. It has some spice up front and plenty of the sweetness on the finish that I like, others may not like as much, in a sipping rum. I'll give it a thumbs up and will buy it again.

Haven't had the Zacapa, but I've had a couple bottles of El Dorado 12, and do like that a bit. There is not a lot of difference between the 12 and the 15, at least not that I had tasted, so either would be a good investment, IMO.

I've also had and liked Ron Matusalem Clasico.

HC 7 is another good one. Though I have had it side by side with Guatemalan Zaya, and preferred the Zaya. Just suited my palate better.

I know that I'll need to try some of the others that have been listed here, too

IMO, the new Zaya definitely has more vanilla taste and is a bit sweeter. The old had much less vanilla, less sweet, but had more taste if that makes any sense. More dimensions if you will. I preferred the old in a side by side test, but like both very much.

Black Seal I like - have a couple bottles of it, and don't think you can compare the two against each other.

Black Seal - I like to call it a "hearty" rum. It's very unusual to me in the world of rums. Straight or mixed - it gives you two distinct tastes as if it was two different rums. Also keep in mind, if you've never seen a bottle of it, that the bottle itself is actually clear and not black!

Black Strap on the other hand left me with a please God - remove my tongue from my mouth and I'll go to church everyday and twice on Sunday.

Seriously - Black Strap tasted like it was distilled in old pig gut barrels with bridle straps cut from a dead horses ass tossed in for flavor.

Took four shots of Flor de Cana 12 year to cut the taste from my mouth.

Could just be me though - my friend Bob tried it and seemed to enjoy it. So either I'm way off base or he has a hankering for dead horse butt.

I liked the Ron Zacapa the best, sweet, but not artificially so, and very smooth.

2nd was the Pampero, less sweet than the RZ, and with an oaky hint, also quite smooth

3rd was the Zaya. I was most excited about this one, I love vanilla, and everyone says this has it in spades. Well it does, but it was the least smooth, and had the most alcohol bite. It was still good, but I think it will reside in the freezer.

GUATEMALAN!!!

Had them side by side and there was noticably more bite in the Trini version. And had too much vanilla for my taste.

My current favorite is Zacapa 23, but after all the high praise, I intend to find a bottle of Zaya when I get home from this desert.

The only bottle in my collection that hasn't been mentioned is Seven Fathoms. It is currently only available in the Cayman Islands and is well worth trying if you can get your hands on it. The strong oak flavors are slightly reminiscent of a good bourbon. I am more stingy with this stuff than I am my pre-Patron Planters Gold Pyrat XO Reserve.

Unless you're going to try to find the Guatemalan version, don't bother. Zacapa is better than the Trini Zaya.

Which ever is available, most likely Trini. I think for changing locations they were able to maintain an amazingly high level of consistancey between the two blends :2 and fwiw, the Guat Montecristo is the best rum I've had from that distillary.

My parents were on Grand Cayman this summer, brought me back a bottle of Seven Fathoms, and Havana Club. They actually brought 3 bottles of Seven Fathoms back, and managed to get two different batches. There's a noticeable difference between batch 9 and batch 10. If I remember right, 10 was the first batch with a new still. Since it's a small shop, there's room for that sort of variance from one lot to the next. I think that makes it even more interesting. Which lot is your bottle from?

In other rum news, I spent the weekend in St. Pete, FL and came home with a bottle of Barbancourt Grand Reserve, Prichard's, and Centenario rum. Tasted all three side by side, at room temp, neat.

Centenario tastes a lot like Zacapa 23. Haven't tried 'em side by side yet, but not sure I'd tell the difference otherwise.

Prichard's is quite good, especially since it's a Tennessee rum. Has a bit more barrel flavor, almost like a hint of Bourbon. I like the 'toasty' rums better than 'sweet' rums, so at first taste I put this above Centenario. Might improve with a tiny piece of ice, but not bad neat.

The Barbancourt is the loser of the bunch. It wasn't all that great, definitely not on par with the other two. Needs another try though, maybe on ice.

I tend to agree with this, other than the vanilla taste in the new version. The old version was a bit smoother, but if I don't compare side by side, only the vanilla stands out as a difference.

I don't know. The bottles are patiently sitting on a shelf waiting for my return from this desert. What did you think of the "underwater rum?"

I also have a bottle of Havana Club that has been in a closet since I brought it home in 2002. I really need to crack the seal on that one.

I like the 'underwater rum'. Pretty smooth, clean, not too complicated, not sweet, fits what I like to call the 'spanish-style' rums, i.e. rums from Spanish-influenced islands like Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, etc. I'd love to see this rum aged a bit longer, I usually like a little more barrel flavor in my rums and it could stand to smooth out a bit.

Seven Fathoms is a good rum, but I like the Havana Club better. I've got the HC7, tastes a lot like what I would hope Seven Fathoms would taste like after 7 years in oak, a bit smoother, more wood flavors, etc. What're you waiting for, crack that bottle!

"Aromas of prune, allspice, dates, nutmeg, cloves, balsam, Demerara sugar and dried-fig build to also show caramel, candied tree fruits, maple, butter toffee and molasses—each carving a marvelous invitation to taste. The palate is full with treacle, sweet tea, Lazarakia, mince tart, Panettone, Marzipan, toffee bathed in a lovely sweetness that washes the palate but maintains a clean, salient limpidity. The simple mouth-feel reveals dried fruits, caramel, fig custard, sultanas and butterscotch. All this leads to a solid finish, with lovely balance that articulates in a gentle fade that is rich with excellent palate activity. "

A friend turned me on to a sale on the RZ XO, so I figured since Zacapa 23 is my favorite now (along with Centenario), I should try the premium stuff while it's a bargain...hopefully it gets here ny New Years. :dr

I do find the description of flavors on the vendor website rather amusing, although not quite as over the top as the one Mark posted for the Ron Millonario.

On the nose, Ron Zacapa XO displays rich notes of toasted oak, burnt caramel, roasted nuts, marzipan and orange peel. Smooth and sweet on the palate, flavors of dark chocolate, dried fruit, and baking spice lead to hints of mango and ginger on the lingering finish.

Gosling's Black Seal - Cheap, available everywhere, delicious. Don't ever buy Meyer's Dark when Gosling's is sitting nearby.

Pyrat XO - Not bad, but I have a hard time getting paste the citrusy/orange flavor. Almost seems too 'orangey' to be real. Great on ice though.

OK, have tried the Black Seal, and it is tasty. Was given a bottle of Brugal Anejo by a brother on the board and have enjoyed a bit of that.

Now, here's the dilemna. I tasted the Zaya, wanted to get some of my own. So, I've been looking for some Zaya & Ron Zacapa, but noplace nearby (within an hour drive) has them.

I did find a bottle of the Pyrat XO for $26 so I snagged that and had some with an Oliva Connecticut Lonsdale today - very nice pairing. I kind of like the citrusy notes in this rum.

OK, I have done many wines - am no expert, but no neophyte.

Like my Single Malts Scotch and Irish Whiskey - know what I can afford, and know what I like.

Plenty of decent small batch Bourbans out there.

Enjoy a good Cognac &/or Aragnac.

Never thought of rums as anything other than a mixer. Usually bought the cheap ones, since when you mix it, you can't really taste the nuances anyway.

Now, I have been exposed to good rums - sipping rums -- and have a few questions.

Why do the really good Whiskeys run $50 and more, and the great rums start at about $25 and you can get award winners for $35 or less?

Is it just me, or do good rums taste best warmer, like a Cognac?

Depends on the rum. The sweet rums like Zaya, Zacapa, etc. I like at room temperature. Too cold and the sweetness overpowers the flavors.

I'm partial to a more 'dry' style usually (Ron del Barrilito is my favorite), and I think they benefit from being slightly chilled, just a small ice chip or two. I figure it's using cold to help smooth out the alcohol instead of sugar.

I've heard others say that a few drops of water can 'open up' a glass of rum, but I haven't noticed that.

Has anyone else tried Renegade Rum (http://www.renegaderum.com/)? Difficult to find, and quite expensive as rum goes, but well worth the purchase if you come across a bottle. My wife bought me a bottle of the 1995 Panama Don Jose (http://renegaderum.com/2008donjose.html) from their 2008 release last year for Valentine's Day, such an amazingly beautiful rum. Even she, who never sips spirits because she can't get past the alcohol on the nose, enjoys this one neat in a snifter. We've since bought 2 more bottle for ourselves and 2 for her father.

Much more "scotchy" than most rums, however you'd expect that given that these are rums that are matured and aged by Bruichladdich in Scotland in the whisky tradition. Adding the different cask maturation stages gives a very different flavour profile to most rums.

Cruzan Single Barrel is my 'old faithful'. I think it's a great value, and it's easy to replace (rum selection is slim in most of MD). I like Pampero a little more, but I don't think I've seen it in this state.

I did grab a bottle of Vizcaya just after Christmas from the recommendations here. I think it's a 'sleeper' rum, doesn't get a lot of press but it's very good.

The Cruzan was 23 bucks, so the same as the Appleton

once I open it, I'll do a side by side and the better of them will become my "old faithful" type as well as they're relatively cheap and readily available

although there is a place in town that carries RZ for it's 44 bucks

too lazy to search, what's a reasonable price for guata. zaya? found a local store w/ a case @ $40 pop.
$28 ea @ TW
Heck, the Trini version is $40 at my local Total Wine. I'd buy 2 or 3 bottles of the Guatemalan at that price.
if you can find it then buy them all

Buy them all, and I'll take a couple from you!!!!!! Trini Zaya goes for about $45 here in MN.

How did I not find any when we were down there last month. :(

OK, being new to this. Stopped to pick up a 6-pack of some Spotted Cow in Green Bay, and stopped in the rum aisle. They had Appleton (clear & a dark), Oronoco, Mount Gay (a clear & a dark), Kilo Kai (?) and some others that were mass market stuff I see everywhere.

I looked. I wondered. Then I thought I'd ask here.

So, how do those compare to Zaya or Ron Zacapa 23 or Brugal or Black Seal?

Never had Brugal or Black Seal. Todd, but Zacapa 23 and Zaya blow the doors off the Appleton, Oronoco and Mount Gay IMHO.....totally different leagues.

It all depends. I've never had Oronoco, but it generally gets ranked pretty good for a clear rum. Should make a killer mojito. I'm not a fan of the clear Mount Gay, never had clear Appleton. The 'regular' dark rums from both companies are comparable to your average bottle of Bacardi, the V/X maybe a little better, the Mount Gay Eclipse a little less. Both companies make some nice aged rums though.

Mount Gay Extra Old is comparable to Cruzan Single Barrel. I think of it as an 'entry level' aged rum. It's got a nice 'barrel' flavor, toasted caramel, etc. If you like sweet rums like Zaya/Zacapa, Extra Old may not fit your taste. If you prefer a drier style, it's worth keeping around.

Appleton is similar, though they have more of a variety of aged rums. I just finished a bottle of Appleton Extra. It was good, but not as good as Mount Gay Extra Old. The V/X is their 'standard' dark rum, again similar to Bacardi. I haven't tried the other blends, so no comment there.

If you liked the Brugal (was it clear, gold, or anejo?), try the Appleton. If they've got Mount Gay Extra Old, give that one a shot too, but I'd avoid the MG Eclipse. If you want a change of pace/clear rum, pick up the Oronoco.

I am not looking for rum to mix - sorry, but I'll probably get crucified for saying this - good stuff is wasted on me when mixed.

I guess I am thinking in regard to sipping rums - straight up. I like to sit and sip a shot's worth while enjoying a cigar. I can do a couple beers with a cigar, but about 1.5 ounces of rum is great to sip through a whole cigar. And, according to what you have all said, the clears are more for mixing and the darks, while you can mix them, when they are good, are good for sipping.

In that case, try the Mount Gay Extra Old, Appleton Extra, or Appleton 21 yr. I think those are best with a small ice cube instead of neat.

Anything less from those brands and you'll be disappointed if you're drinking it straight.

Have any of you had the Cockspur? What are your thoughts? Saw this at a local liquor store.

I have the Old Gold and 5 Star versions. I don't use as a sipper. A bit rough and bite - use only as a mixer or jet fuel.

Seriously though - I'd rank it above say standard Bacardi but under Bacardi Select or 8 year.

Right now Im just easing into Rums. Before I just had Capt Morgan/ Baccardi stuff like that and I dont like them at all. My cousin gave me a shot of Sailor Jerry and it was (to me alot better than those two)

What else should I look for. Mind you I dont have a huge selection here in rural NJ (yeah I know its hard to comprehend but its true)

I havent seen Zaya or anything really fancy

Might pick up a bottle of Black Seal to try that with, from what I tasted last night the Old Rum is a sipping rum that I won't be mixing (especially considering how much it costs in BC). I tend to prefer neat spirits to mixed drinks anyways.

You're on the right track, I think Sailor Jerry is much better than the Captain. There are a few good rums that ought to be easy to find most anywhere. Bacardi 8 isn't bad, and it'll be everywhere. Mount Gay Extra Old and Cruzan Single Barrel are usually easy to find, and I enjoy them both. The sweet rums like Zaya/Zacapa will be harder to find this far north, but you may be able to find a bottle of Pyrat. It's not quite the same as the Z's, but it's more common. Going in another direction, try a bottle of Gosling Black Seal. If you can't find any of those, drive further :)

I've beeen eyeing up the Old Family Rum for awhile now, haven't been able to pull the trigger though. Is it comparable to anything else?

Unfortunately I'm not the best person to ask that question. I'm primarily a scotch guy so my experience with premium rums is quite limited. It's quite different from both Pyrat and the bottle of Renegade (1995 Don Jose Panamanian) that she gave me last Valentines if that helps.

I acquired two more bottles of rum this past weekend, both Tanduay from the Philippines

one is the 5year Rhum, and the other is the 12 year superior. I don't know much about them but some buddies visiting the 'ppines hooked me up

I just saw this http://www.krakenrum.com/ at the store tonight, I may have to give it a whirl for about 20 bucks a bottle.
Sounds like a passable sipper and a mixer, but at 94 proof.. a tich of water might be a good idea.
