View Full Version : Stray black lab mix story.

We've had a black lab mix stray in the neighborhood for what seems like at least a couple of years. There has never been a problem with this dog getting into trash or bothering us when we walk our dogs. She has always kept her distance from anybody who gets remotely close to her.
Around Thanksgiving when we had a freeze, I looked out the kitchen window and saw her and felt badly for her so I opened a can of dog food and took it down to the sidewalk with a bowl of water and whistled to her. She perked up her ears and sat up and as I walked back up to the house she headed across the vacant field where she often sits, stopped at the curb and looked both ways before crossing and coming over to eat. After a car or two went by and startled her a little, she picked up the paper bowl and again looked both ways before taking it back across to the lot and up the little embankment to finish the remaining food.
Since that day, I look out in the mornings on weekends and when I get home on work days and if I see her I feed and water her. She won't get closer than about 50 feet or so to me, but I talk to her when I'm walking over to put out the food.
We have two dogs, both adopted from Arlington, TX Animal Services - Rockie http://www.nozero.org/friends.htm#Rockie and Zoe http://www.nozero.org/friends.htm#Zoe. Rockie was the most recent addition to our family and when we got him I got a follow up call from the volunteer at the shelter who use to walk him. Over time, we exchanged a few calls and emails and became friendly. Once while we were at the vet, a lady was there and just by listening to her, I thought it may be her so I asked and it was. She turned around and loved on Rocky and we introduced ourselves in person for the first time. Since she lives not far from me quite often takes in strays, I decided to ask if she was familiar with this dog. She said she was and that she had set up a kennel with a tarp about a block away in the other direction, but had not seen the dog since last May and thought she had died. She was very glad to hear about her and when I mentioned the gray snout and chin, she was certain it was the same dog. She (Dianne) said she and her husband had nicknamed the dog Oprah.
Apparently, Oprah has been evading capture by Arlington Animal Services for quite some time now. Dianne asked if there was a place on the empty lot to put the kennel so Oprah would have a place to go out of the rain and wind. At one time the lot had a double-wide trailer on it that housed a Church/Day Care facility and I guess it went belly up since they closed down and eventually the trailer was towed away. Now there is a sign up for another church and based on the images on the sign it will be another trailer type set up. Since I don't know when they will be starting construction and since the lot is frequented by kids from the junior high school about a block away, I suggested that we put the kennel in our front yard or maybe on the front porch. I'm waiting for Dianne to call me to work out the details. I'd love to gain this dogs trust and adopt her, but since about a year ago when we had an incident with a neighbor's dog breaking it's tether and attacking Zoe. Rockie promptly put a end to the attack by engulfing the offending dogs head in his mouth. Rockie has since become very dog aggressive toward all dogs other than Zoe. We did eventually get the dog loose from Rockies jaws and the little fart bit me in the process. He had a couple of bite marks, but he was not badly injured.
I fed and watered Oprah this morning and am now waiting to hear from Dianne on the Kennel/tarp. It's 32 degrees outside right now and raining on and off. While it's not yet freezing on the street, we've got little icicles hanging on the tree branches in the front yard. I'm hoping Oprah is someplace dry if not warm and dry...
Thanks for reading and sorry for my verbosity, but one thing led to another and so on... Any kind thoughts you can send Oprah's way would be deeply appreciated.

I'll try to get a pic to post either way. I just get so excited when I see her, glad to see she's still OK day by day. Then I get in a hurry to get food and water out to her and I forget about getting a pic.

The kennel and tarp are in place along with a bowl of fresh water. I've not seen her since this morning, but Dianne saw her around noon before bringing the kennel over. I'll check tomorrow morning and put out food (near or in the kennel) tomorrow after work. Hoping for the best for her...

Fed her last night and once again she carried the bowl back across the street to the empty lot to eat... Sorry, I have yet to get a pic but will keep trying.
Looked for her after work today but so far no sign of her, so we put food and water out by the kennel in case she stops by later tonight.

We've been feeding he once to twice a day. Well, we know she gets most of the food because we watch her eat through the blinds on the windows. We assume she's eating the food we leave out otherwise, but we do have a neighbor who lets their Chihuahua out and... She still won't get closer than fifteen feet or so from me. Each time I open the door to try to get a pic, she head to the other side of the street. :-(
Yesterday when I looked out, she was doing donuts in the lot across the street chasing her tail then running full speed one way then the other. Seemed like she was in good spirits. Still hoping for the best for her. She's a very attractive dog.
Thanks to all for reading and for the kinds words and bumps.

Thanks. When I get home from work, I let my dogs out to the back yard. Then go check mail and look for her. If I see her, I make sure there is fresh water in her bowl and go get her food ready and take it back out. If she's lying down, I whistle and if she does not hear that, I tap the metal food bowl with a fork or spoon then she perks up.
Last night our street was rather busy with traffic so I took the bowl across the street to her and she wagged her tail, though only twice, when she saw me coming. I got about ten feet from her before she backed up a step. Perhaps some day I'll have the pleasure of petting her and bringing her into our home. It may be a hassle with Rockie at first, but I think he'd get used to her after a bit. I just gotta figure out where I'd put another kennel in the house. We already have two in our living room for Rockie and Zoe... Then I'd have to convince my wife and that may be difficult.
Dogs are still the best examples of unconditional love I have ever experienced.

I just put her food out for tonight even though we've not seen her today. I've got the front door open with the glass storm door closed and Zoe, Rockie and I are watching for her.

Still feed her everyday I see her and even leave food when I don't. Just fed her and met her out in the middle of the lot across the street with a few treats. Still can't get more than 6-10 fee from her, but now she wags her tail and looks happy to see me each time I try.
Still hoping for the best.

Thanks to all for the kind words. I'm just doing what feels right.
Over the last week, I had some heat pump problems because my unit lost all the freon, then the compressor failed so I've been home a few times from work. I've seen 3-4 maybe 5 people approach her, she lets me get closer than anybody else and it give me a very nice warm feeling. But, I'd do what I do, even if that were not the case.

Still feeding her and giving her fresh water daily and sharing some of our dogs butcher bones with her. The animal control truck chased her across the lot yesterday and nearly into heavy traffic. They should know by now that they can't catch her.
Everytime somebody or somebodies vehicle chases her, she gets harder to get close to for a few days and it's "just like starting over".
There are now 2-4 other folks feeding her from time to time, so she's well fed, that's for sure!

She sniffed my hand!
I looked out for her just now and she was waiting in the front yard again. I went back in and got a bone and some dry food. Put the food and the bone in the bowl and she was jumping around like crazy, I put out my hand and sat down on the ground and she very cautiously came over and sniffed my hand. I didn't try to pet her, just talked to her. It made me feel so good!

There are still 3-4 others feeding her regularly, so she is getting finicky about what she'll eat and when. She still shys away from those "strangers" who stop by and try to feed her or get close to her.

Nice work Michael:tu. I'm glad the animal services guy can't catch her. They would have to put her down for sure. In tough economic times animal services operations get swamped, and a pooch like Oprah that's not accustomed to human contact would not stand a chance.
I got a knot in my throat when you wrote about her chasing her tail and darting around by herself :)

Another of "Oprah's friends" brought her two dog toys about a week ago, a pink tug-of-war and a neon green Kong TM dumbbell. Oprah took the pink one across the street to her hill.
When I fed her this morning, I took the green one and squeezed it and squeaked it toward her then tossed it to her. She snatched it up and danced around tossing it up in the air and sometimes catching it.
She came to me twice this morning and sniffed my hand again and then retreated to her "safe distance". I just sat in our yard talking to her until I started getting bit by ants, then I got up and walked over to her, she just sat there and let me approach. I offered my hand and she let me touch her chin briefly.
As I think I've mentioned, there are others who feed her as well. One in particular, the one who brought the dog toys, used to do volunteer work for Arlington Animal Services. She has contacts and has already found a potential home for Oprah. I'd love to take her in, but our "Rockie" is dog agressive and I don't think it would work out. Plus, we don't really have room for another dog. Our youngest son has said he'd take her, but he'd be violating his lease agreement at his apartment complex if he did and he's already in violation, since has a boxer and three cats.
Thanks again for all your kind comments in this thread.:tu

Another breakthrough!
I just went out and took Oprah some water since she'd been in the lot in the sun most of the day, I took it across the street to her. After I came back to the house, I looked out and she was in the front yard, so I went out and sat in the yard and she came close and sniffed me again, then went and laid down about 8-10 feet away. I got up and went over to her and she just laid there so I bent over and she let me pet her head. I got to scratch behind her ears and her neck too. It was amazing!
Got this picture earlier today too.

No sir, that's one of Arlington's Police vehicles. I've had very good luck with them and find them to be very professional. I even submitted a compliment to the Police Department via the Arlington City web site, when I got my last speeding ticket. I've had less than professional treatment by police officers in the past, so I appreciate the professionals. He called me sir, explained why he stopped me, the speed limit as well as the speed he clocked me at and told me if I were stopped again from the far left lane, that I should stop on the left hand shoulder. I told him that I had always stopped in the far right shoulder because it give me more room to stay away from the other traffic. Here in Texas, when you pass any emergency vehicle, you are supposed to either move over one lane or if you pass in the lane next to them, you reduce your speed by 20 mph. There were idiots flying by him, I'm sure hitting 70 mph or better.
Anyway, I received a return email with a thank you. Turns out, they don't often get commendations from persons who received tickets.

I've become quite concerned about Oprah regarding what will happen to her after I catch her, as I'm quite certain I could capture her now. I worry that the Arlington Animal Services would put her down because she's older and so timid. A lot of people don't want the dog that sits in the corner of the pen at the shelter, which I think she would. Really, I'd keep her if there were any chance of her and Rockie getting along and if I could convince Debbie (my wife) too.
Debbie suggested last night that if I were to see some of the other people that feed Oprah today, that I should inquire to see if they'd be interested in adopting her. Well this morning after I'd been out to take Oprah her morning biscuit and fresh water and decided to go out for a cigar on the front lawn. While I was gathering up my chair, phones, laptop, coffee, lighter, cutter and cigar. I looked across the street and saw one of Oprah's friends. So I crossed the street to talk to her and introduced myself telling her I lived across the street and asked if she was interested in adopting Oprah or if she was just feeding her to be kind. She may have been a little leery of me, I have that effect on some people. She clearly stated that she would be interested! So I gave her my phone numbers and suggested that she call me and give me her number, so I could contact her if I was able to catch Oprah, if she was comfortable with that. Oprah would not go to her but, as she was driving away, I went to Oprah and she again let me pet her.
As I sit typing this now, another of Oprah's friends is across the lot and petting her! I'd be very happy if somebody who cares for her gave her a home! I just walked over and talked to this lady too. Turns out, both of these ladies are named Jan. This one already has two dogs, but she knows the other Jan and said she knew the other Jan wanted to adopt Oprah and make her an indoor dog. She said today was the first time Oprah let her pet her and I could tell it made her feel as good as it did when I petted her for the first time.
Some idiot just hollered at Oprah from the other side of the painted fence next to the alley on the back side of the lot. Oprah ran across the lot, headed toward Green Oaks Blvd and by the time I stood up to see what was going on, I could not see who it was or where they were. I don't see Oprah in the lot now, but have strong hopes that she'll return later today or this evening.
Still hoping for the best! :tu

Well, the lady that is interested in adopting Oprah called me back yesterday. I need to call her and ask her if she wants me to attempt to capture her or if she is going to get the other lady who's been feeding her to try.
We really don't have room, we have a small house 1368 SQFT and we already have two large dogs. I don't want to capture her then have to keep her for long since Rockie is dog agressive. It would be difficult to cycle them outdoors and indoors. Plus, Oprah is in very bad need of a bath. My hands get black when I pet her back or scratch her belly.
I went out and sat with and petted Oprah again last just after 8 PM. Had to work today so I put her fresh water and biscuit out before I left. Another friend was going to feed her this morning. I've not seen her yet tonight.
I'll keep posting any changes.

We've had some chilly/wet weather lately and I didn't get to see Oprah Tuesday or Wednesday, but the food and water I put out was gone so I was hoping she was the one eating it.
Went out to her last night three different times and got to pet her each time. Also spoke to the lady who wants to adopt her and we're hoping to get moving on this today after work. I'm going to make sure she's available before trying to get a leash on Oprah. I don't want to spook her for no reason. I'm also hoping she won't bite, not that she's ever given any indication that she would, but one can never tell.
Dogs seem to sense everything about us and are very keen on any changes, so I will have to be very calm cool and collected so maybe she'll stay that way too. I'm going to act like it's no big thing and just keep talking to her and will probably have a pocket full of shredded cheese to keep her interested. I'm going to attempt to slip a leash over one shoulder crossing over her chest and under the opposite leg then back up and pull it through the handle loop. This is how I took both Zoe and Rockie from the shelter when we adopted them and it worked pretty well, but they were glad to go with me.
I'm going to call the lady again tonight when I get home from work and work out any details, if the weather holds and we don't have to postpone. Getting Oprah on a Friday night and having Saturday and Sunday to spend alone with her should be a good start for them both before she has to return to work Monday. I've suggested a crate or large plastic kennel to keep her in in the garage in bad weather or back yard weather permitting, so she does not try to dig out and until she gets more comfortable with her new surroundings.
Based on the gray in her chin hair, Oprah's an older dog, I'd guess 6-8 maybe? I would feel so much better if the time she has left were to be shared with somebody who loves her and she could love.
Still hoping for the best. As Oat Willie said "Onward Through the Fog"!

Jan, that's the lady's name called me today and said she would be attending a birthday party for her son until about 8:00 or 8:30. When I got home, I drove by the front of the house and Oprah was in the lot across the street. I rolled down my window and hollered "hello sweetie" and she cocked her head and looked as though to say "where have you been". I drove around back and pulled in the garage and went in the house said hey to my dogs and let them out, then grabbed a biscuit to go see her. Something must have been up, as she would get close and sniff my hand, but would not let me touch her, she just kept backing away. I went out and tried about three times, because she just hung around the front yard. But after she backs up, I stop. I don't "push it", it's going to be on her tems. The last time I was trying, Jan drove up and stopped and got out of her SUV and Oprah increased her distance going back across the street. I don't know that tonight will work. We have about 2 inches of water on the side of our house leading to the front gate to the back yard, this could be hard to get through even if I could get close enough to snag her. It's supposed to warm to 55 tomorrow and no rain is currently in the forcast, but this is Texas and that can change quickly.
If nothing happens tonight, Jan said she'd get out tomorrow and visit the lot and try to get Oprah's trust. I play 8 ball on Saturdays in a league and won't get home until after 5 PM or so. But I figure there's not need to rush this. It took me months to gain Oprah's trust, I'd hate to screw up now. If it takes a while, it takes a while. But it would be nice if Oprah had a home for my 54th B-day Sunday. That would be the best gift I can imagine. But, this is about Oprah, not me.
Even if this does not work out. I will continue to feed and water her for as long as she has the need. When I look into her beautiful brown eyes, I know I could do nothing else and I like to think that she knows I care.
Thanks again for the comments, I appreciate knowing that you all care too.

I just got back from playing pool and she was in the lot across the street. I took a couple of biscuits out and called to her but she just laid there looking at me. I walked across the street and approached and she kept backing away again, but then laid down and exposed her belly. I had noticed something bumpy there before and today I looked closely and found that she has stitches intact! There are at least two, knots exposed and the rest under the skin. I tugged on one gently to see if it would pull out but didn't want to risk hurting her in case they were still connected underneath the skin. I wonder if she was in to be spayed and escaped?
I was able to give her a good scratching all over, ears, neck front and back and especially belly, she seemed to enjoy it very much. I picked up her pink "baby" and squeezed it and it barked and panted. She cocked her head RCA dog style and looked like what are you doing with my baby. So I took it back with me and showed her as I tossed it into her kennel. She's going to have to come get it.
I think it would be better if Jan could get close to Oprah and gain her trust on Oprah's terms before she tries to take her home.
I really wish I could convince my wife that she MAY get along with our dogs. I know Oprah trusts me, so far and I think more than anyone else. I feel as though I'd be betraying her trust if I just caught her and then turned her over to somebody else. What do you think?
Oh, not that it matters, but I lost my match. But at least it was to a good friend who is the one that got me to join the league. It was a 3/4 match, I had to win 3 he had to win 4. He won the lag, then the first two games. On the third he scratched on the 8 ball, the next game I won, then he won the last two.

Just got back from my B-day dinner with my wife, two sons and one sons fiancé. Took a biscuit out to Oprah and got her to lay down and let me scratch her belly again! Loved on her a bit then told her to find her a warm dry place to sleep and that I'd see her in the morning.

I have two rescued Rottweillers and I'm a K9 cop (Belgian Malinois named Irk). Try to find a way to keep her if possible. Oprah wants to stay with you, I can feel it :). You can do it, but it will take a lot of hard work. Whatever happens, I'm glad you are watching over her. You have a big heart my friend.

Based on the gray in her chin hair, Oprah's an older dog, I'd guess 6-8 maybe? I would feel so much better if the time she has left were to be shared with somebody who loves her and she could love.
Still hoping for the best. As Oat Willie said "Onward Through the Fog"!
Agreed... you are doing a great job, Michael. Hope Oprah will be well cared for and loved... by Jan, or someone else. For now, you have done an outstanding job. :tu

This is the first time I've seen this thread, and all I can say is what you're doing is awesome. You are clearly a very kind hearted person. Keep being patient with Oprah. I grew up on a horse farm, and we "accumulated" (no real adoption at the time) several stray dogs. Sometimes it takes time....depending on what kind of unknown situation they came from, but as you know if you show them love, they reciprocate in kind.

I really wish I could convince my wife that she MAY get along with our dogs. I know Oprah trusts me, so far and I think more than anyone else. I feel as though I'd be betraying her trust if I just caught her and then turned her over to somebody else. What do you think?
QUOTE]
I think if you don't give your dogs a chance to see if they would get along, you would forever wonder if it would have worked out.
I also believe that Oprah would really appreciate staying in your family after your hard work restoring her faith in humans.
Do what you feel best, but I think you know how you'd like this to end.
A lot of us share that same wish. :tu

Guess who's sitting in our backyard?
After feeding her this morning and sitting with her in the front yard a couple of times for 10-15 minutes here and there. I opened the gate to the back yard and started scoop'n the poop'n leaving the gate open and trying to go in and out of her view. She became curious and laid down an watched. Then, when I was done I sat, out of her view, in my plastic adirondack chair where I am sitting now smoking the Kristoff Maduro my son gave me. She came about half way back between our houses toward the gate, but would not come back further.
I decided it was time to move. Earlier today I found an old purple collar and matching 4' leash that I think had belonged to Zoe and put it on the workbench on our patio. I left the collar and took the leash and walked toward her. She retreated to the front yard and laid down, so I went over and petted her and scratched behind her ears, then kept scratching with my left hand while reaching for the leash in my right back pocket with my right. I slipped it under her left front leg chest and back up and over in front of her right front leg and cinched it up. I stood up, tugged gently on the leash and said c'mon and she did! She went very, very hesitantly but she walked with me through the gate to the backyard and I closed the gate behind us.
Now she's sitting about 10 feet from me watching me smoke my cigar. I've not called Jan or Dianne yet. I'm still thinking and debating in my head.
Plus, Rockie and Zoe get "into it" ever other month or so. Most often when they are both after the same thing, whether it be a kid on the other side of the fence teasing them through the fence or a squirrel running along the top of the fence or roof. They'll bump then go after each other until I yell or have to go break them up. They've not yet drawn each others blood, but the fur sure gets to flying about.
The last dog Rockie got ahold of was pretty messed up when I got the little guy out of Rockie's jaws. But then, Rockie was IMO protecting us and Zoe. After all, the little guy broke his tether, ran across the street and attacked Zoe. He got in a few good bites, but not breaking the skin on her neck, but he did leave a gash on her lip that bled a litttle. While I was carrying him back to his family he bit my third finger on my left hand.
My wife Debbie just came out and talked to Oprah; Deb doesn't like the name Oprah at all much less for such a pretty dog. She wouldn't go to Deb but she didn't back away either. Good sign me thinks.

A happy ending... I'm both sad and happy and still have a lump in my throat.
Well, I got my birthday wish. Oprah just left with Jan. I called her and she was grocery shopping and said she could be here in 30 minutes. She came over, I took her to the back yard and now Sadie and she got along fine. I put the leash on her and we walked back out front and she didn't put up a fight when I put her in the back seat of Jan's daughters car. Sadie will be visiting the vet tomorrow and Jan said she's probably going to board her at the vet during the day for the first few days so she didn't take the kennel that Dianne had offered. But I told her I'd hold it for her and she agreed she may want it later on.
Jan said she'd keep me posted and I'll revisit this thread and post any news I get.
I didn't get to keep her but I'm confident that she's with somebody who will take good care of her and she's only a few blocks away.
Thanks for reading and caring.
Respectfully,
Michael

I'm a wuss, I know and I don't care. I got a lump in my throat when they drove off with her and another one when reading your posts. I don't often pray even less for such a selfish one as for Sadie to be happy in her new home. But it comes from my heart and I hope G-d listens.
I called to check on her earlier tonight, Jan said she was acting like she was drugged, she'd find a corner and just lay there. I told Jan I thought that was to be expected and that it may take a few days for her to be more comfortable and be more "normal". She had not peed or pooped since she took her home. I had not seen her drink any water when we were in our front yard, or while in the back and that may be why. I think this may be normal? I'm sure she'll drink, eat, poop and pee when she needs to do so.
Jan had called her and my vet (Rockie's vet, not Zoe's) and is going to get her in tomorrow for a heart worm and other check-up and shots and to hopefully board her while Jan goes to work. I gave her my other vet's number, Zoe's vet, as a back up. Apparently lots of them are busy due to Spring Break.
Dianne looked at Sadie's teeth when she was here before Jan picked her up and said that she didn't think she was as old as we have thought, based on the gray/white on her beard and snout. That made me feel like she'll have more years to be happy in her new home.
I don't ask much, but if you are one who prays, please say one for Sadie? I will be forever in your debt.
I hope to get to go visit her in her new home after she's had time to settle in. I'll post about it...
Well. I'm a year older now and happy with how this has turned out.
Thanks once again to all who have posted in this thread, it has helped me more than you will ever know and for this, I thank you.

I called Jan last night to check on Sadie. She said she was doing well, but Jan worried because Sadie would just find a corner, lay down and stay there. I told her that I felt that was because she had been on her own for so long, she didn't know what else to do and I bet within a few days, once she's more sure of her new home and companion, she'll be just fine. She was also worried that she would not eat and had not urinated yet. I told her that I didn't see her take in any water yesterday at all, and that she probably had used our backyard "facility" before she was picked up. She was taking her out every two hours, just in case.
Jan it taking her to the vet today, the same vet we use for Rockie, to get a good checking out. I'm hoping she tests negative for heart worms and that her blood work comes back good. Dianne and I checked her teeth yesterday before Jan picked her up. Based on her teeth, Jan said she didin't think she was as old as we thought. I found one tick on her right ear, but it was small and I didn't want to hurt her by pulling if off, I felt that she was probably under enough stress already. To go from being almost completely independant to being confined in a strange backyard was enough.
I had brushed her while she was here and think her being in and out of the rain last week had helped. Her coat looked better and she lost most of her odor. The first time I got to pet her, she had a pretty bad stink and my hands were nearly black afterward. She still needs a good bath, but she looked pretty good considering.
I put up a sign in the lot across the street to thank everybody who had fed and cared for Sadie and to let them know she had found a new home.

From Jan
Sadie is doing well, otherwise. She actually ate this morning for the first time. She got a bath last night. She is still very skiddish but she is warming up to me. Yesterday when I went home for lunch, I took her outside and when we went back in the house she just walked right back in the crate. Last night I left the crate door open but she didn’t get back in. When I am home she lays in the entrance to the bedroom, but when I am not home she seems to like the crate. I have been taking her on short walks. Last night some kids were playing and a baseball hit the wood fence and it scared her so bad, we cut our walk short. I am going to keep taking her on walks, increasing the distance a little bit at a time. She is such a sweet girl.
If you want to wait awhile on the money, that is fine. That is so nice of you and Debbie. She is going to be on the preventative for 2 months before the treatment begins. Guess I better get to work!
I was pretty sure Jan new this was a potential problem. We don't like to think about these things but they are very real. I think Sadie will do just fine. The longer Sadie is with Jan, the better I feel about what I've done. I hope to get to see her when I take Jan the money.

Took the money over to Jan tonight and got to see Sadie. She's been bathed and looked extra pretty. I got to pet her and love on her a bit. We're giving Jan a wire crate we no longer use, as soon as we get a replacement plastic bottom tray, I'll get to see her again then.
Jan said Sadie will be on preventative heartworm meds for two months before her actual treatment begins. I may not post again for a while unless there anything worthy.
Thanks for your support!

Not much news for most I guess, but Jan said that Sadie barked for the first time yesterday at a possum that was walking across the top of her fence. For me this means that Sadie has accepted this as her home and she was protecting it! I think this is great.
I do so want to see her again, but I want her to be comfortable and secure in her new home first. After that, all I want is for her to remember me fondly. But even if she shies away from me now, I'll still know she's happy in her new home.

Like so many, she's just a big lap dog. I loved on her for a while and talked to her. Jan's going to call the vet tomorrow to check to see when they will be x-raying her to check her heartworm status before beginning her treatment.
I only stayed a few minutes, just long enough to get my "fix". I'll probably wait two or three weeks before going back. Sadie and I both need to get on with our lives in our own ways.

Update
I went over Sunday to visit. Sadie is doing fine, she's one of the most laid back dogs I've ever seen, which during the heartworm treatment is a very good thing since they are not supposed to get excited because the worms can break off and spread to other body parts and organs.
I was a little disappointed that Sadie would not come to me, but it has been months since she saw me last. She let me pet her but I had to go to her.
Jan said that Sadie had reverted back a little to when she was most timid. I think it has to do with her being boarded at a kennel for a week while Jan was on vacation followed by her being at the vet overnight for the first heartworm treatment. I think she may have felt as though she was being abandoned and had a setback.
Her next treatment is either a week or two away and she has to stay for 3 days. I think once she's all done with that, and gets resettled again, everything will fall into place for her and she'll be more comfortable. But hey, what do I know. I often wonder how dogs think, but doubt I'm even close.
It was good to get to see her again.

Next time, probably after her last heartworm treatment, I'll take my camera and hope I can get her to come out of "her corner".

Sadie update...
Here's the last response from my asking how Sadie was doing:
Hey there. Everything is going well. Sadie has reverted a little bit being very skiddish. I can’t figure out if she hears a dog barking in the neighborhood or what it is that sets her off. Other than that she has recuperated from the heart worm treatment and will go back in a few months to get a blood test to make sure there is no infection. Thanks for asking!
PS She has gained 4 pounds. I am trying to get her out walking and exercising a little at a time!

GREAT NEWS!
---
From Jan:
Sadie is great. Getting better by inches and very slowly. It is almost time for her check up to make sure she is still heart worm free. I took her to the dog park a few weeks ago. She really did not want to engage the other dogs much. That's fine, because I don't see me bringing anymore dogs in the house. She still wakes me up very early sometimes, like 4 am to go out. She is getting fat! I need to exercise her more. Walking her is a real work out. She is all over the place. How are you? I got a new camera for Christmas and if I can just figure out how to download pictures I will send your some. My home computer has been acting up. Ugh.
---
I've asked for pictures and will post when she sends.

good luck with her, have you tried sitting the food out and sitting a portabal kennel next to it to see if shell even use it?

This is so cool! You have made Sadie a part of a caring family and there is nothing better for a dog!
Kudos and much Karma to you and Jan and Dianne, and everyone else who helped out!

Forgot to post these... BTW, her last heartworm test came back negative, so she's good to go!

Just heard from Jan. Good news again! From Jan:
Sadie's doing great. Just got her shots and her test was
negative. She is up to 77 pounds, from 60 when I got her. She's still
skittish. She doesn't seem to care much for anyone other than me and
that's okay. I just want her to have a good doggie life.

Was actually just thinking about this thread earlier this week, but couldn't find it to ask if you heard of any updates. Good for Sadie!
