Three brave men started their journey to the face of the moon. Godspeed Apollo 11

Having grown up just a few miles from Cape Kennedy, in a town aptly named Satellite Beach, it's no wonder I have such an affinity for the space program and am saddened by the fact that our manned missions have pretty much been killed in the name of budget cuts while we spend billions on crap and things that do nothing to further mankind and exploration.

Too much to write out but the wiki article is pretty good and even mentions Neil Armstrong's personal preference kit carried a piece of wood from the Wright brothers' 1903 airplane's left propeller and a piece of fabric from its wing.

Kennedy's speech that led to that historic first step:

I didn't know that about Armstrong carrying some pieces of the Wright Bros plane. That's pretty cool.

In one lifetime, or a little less, we went from a rickety powered glider (essentially that's all the Wright Flyer was) made out of wood to landing humans on the Moon. Not once but 6 times. That is truly amazing

I was just seven years old but remember it like it was yesterday. Such a great achievement in our lifetime. Thanks for the reminder.

And in the next lifetime, we have found life on Uranus, Ron.

And yet we have gone no further, we can't even go there anymore. (let's not even add it it was all done with slide rules and lots and lots of pencils and paper)
