View Full Version : My xmas present to myself - Cabinet Humidor!

Here's what I got myself for Christmas... :D
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_HMTVCL3b49c/SVGhVdVhNuI/AAAAAAAABPI/uHaul_jOk_U/s800/DSCN7925.JPG
Stay tuned to this thread, once I get it ready, I'll put a pic of it full up.
I got a KILLER deal on it and it came with a moist-n-aire (with no foam). I've never used one of these before, but it would be cool if I could mod it to use beads or something...
The only bad thing is that it's previous residence was at a head shop, so it smells a bit like patchouli (which is a scent I detest). I'm hoping that goes away soon so I can fill it with my smokes. Right now the door is open and there's a fan in there... any tips on making the smell dissipate quicker would be appreciated.
One of the coolest things is that when I showed my wife (prior to buying it) her exact words were, "Oh, nice... that's exactly what I was thinking you should get for your cigars... it looks nice!". I adore that woman.

Baking soda would work. You could also do quick once-over on the inside with some fine sandpaper. That would get the Spanish Cedar scent going again.
*Just remember to wear a surgical mask while sanding.*

Done and done.... thanks for the reminder about the surgical mask. I sanded the entire thing... the full inside, and every tray that came with it. Now there's 4 fridge/freezer boxes of A&H in there and 8 plates with A&H in the drawers. Hopefully when I get back from holiday madness, I'll be able to load it up. Oddly, rh is pretty good in there at the moment.

Speaking of rh - maybe it would do to put a couple sponges soaked in distilled water in there (on small plates) while you let it sit and try to get the stink out.

There's no foam in a moist-n-aire.
You just put distilled water in it, cheif. :tu
I tear all that doofy mold foam out of all my hydras and replace it with plain old water.
It works great cause I can rinse out the cartridge every time I mess with the hydras.

Sweet humidor, I really like mine. I have the moistenaire and about 4lbs of beads in it.
Gotta be careful with the moistnaire and make sure to change the water at least once a month. Plus mine went nuts on me and just turned itself on for a whole day without me noticing. Humidity was 97% and I had water dripping down the glass. So just keep an eye on it to make sure the humidity control is working. ;) Nice score. :ss

Yeah, mine doesn't seem to know when to shut off... I need to salt test my hydrometers to make sure I'm not crazy. I just changed the batteries in all of them so they may be wrong.
The hydrostats on moistnaires aren't at all accurate. They aren't really meant to be. We use the same kind in manufacturing applications cause they're "good enough".
If you take the little cover off and clean all the dust and spooge off the bimetal with alcohol and qtips they're a lot more reactive, even if not all that accurate.
That means the "swing" may only be 10% from start to stop rather than 20%. That'd get you more in the ballpark, at least.
We're used to beads and as such, we expect the RH to be rock solid at whatever%.
Moistnaires don't work like that. At all. :)
If that doesn't make sense I can explain it a little better. :tu

You will need to perform some surgery on your cabinet but your only real option is to install some form of ThermoElectric cooler...
A local guy built a custom cigar cabinet and he ripped apart a Coleman cool/warm cooler to scavenge the THC out of it... it works well but his cabinet is about 1/2 size of yours...
I'm looking at modding my compressor-based wine-cooler with a THC from a Coleman cooler... I would like to minimize the humidity swings...
