Is there any standard? Are all tins marked with a date, or only some? I found a blog post on how to identify the date on a tin of Escudo, do most tins usually have a cryptic number with a date inserted somewhere? I can't find anything on the SG St James Flake that even resembles a date. Only a barcode.

I've found more tins (that I smoke) don't have dates vs. tins that do have dates. When I buy it, I put the date on the tin figuring it is close.

Most American tins are dated. Most European tins are not. They may have something cryptic that the company rep can read. As for Sam Gawith. No date whatsoever.

McClelland, Cornell & Diehl (they also make Two Friends & GL Pease) are two that usually put dates on the cans. I put a date on the bottoms of cans so I know when I bought them.
