Hall Of Fame player Tony Gwynn, one of the greatest hitters of recent times, has died following a long battle with salivary gland cancer. We have lost the man who taught a generation how to swing a bat.

Rest in peace.

Just read this. Shocked, I knew he was sick, just didn't realize how bad.

R.I.P. Tony. One of the greatest hitters the game has ever seen.

Some highlights of what I read:

Gwynn hit safely in 1,838 games -- which amount to 75.3 percent of those in which he played. In addition, Gwynn had 951 multihit games, reached hitting streaks of at least 10 games on 33 different occasions and had only 34 multistrikeout games. In fact, he had only one career game with three or more strikeouts.

After spending parts of just two seasons in the minor leagues, he made his big league debut on July 19, 1982. Gwynn had two hits that night, including a double, against the Phillies. After doubling, Pete Rose, who had been trailing the play, said to Gwynn: "Hey, kid, what are you trying to do, catch me in one night?"

So sad. Probably the best hitter I'll ever get to see..... RIP Tony

Gone too soon. R.I.P. to one of the greatest hitters of all time, and from all I have heard, a pretty great human being as well.

He was a great player, coach, and just an all around solid dude. The game of Baseball lost one of the best today.
