You know what really drives me nuts? When I'm enjoying a terrific cigar, and I overhear one cigarette smoker remark to another cigarette smoker, 'I hate the stink of those things."

:sw

As a cigar smoker, what really drives you nuts?

I smoked cigarettes for 30 years, I quit 18 months ago, even though I smoke 2 or 3 cigars a day some days, I can STILL smell a cigarette 100 yards away and it stinks to me, even so I wouldn't never say anything about it, some people are just douches.

Nothing grinds my gears, I'm just a happy go lucky kind of guy. :lv

C'mon, Gabe. Cut Dave some slack. After all, he is a fan of the game.

And I didn't hear him or any of the other ManU fans trash talking.

Still a damn funny post, tho.

Same here, but I only smoked cigarettes for five years. If someone lights up near me it just stinks. Nothing enjoyable about that smell anymore. I don't say anything however, if it's too bad I'll just get up and move.

:tpd: Very sage. Thank you for posting this.

I admit that when I am smoking a cigar, I am in a little cocoon of happiness that encircles those cigar smokers around me. It is really hard for me to notice what's going on outside of the herf group. Not deliberate, just the way I am. When something does intrude, I try to be like Steve. :tu

I was never a regular cigarette smoker but used to smoke them while out at the bars with friends (back when you could still smoke in bars). Now I really don't enjoy the smell of cigarettes. The cigar bars here only allow cigar smoking, so I don't end up mixing with cigarette smokers often.

I am also aware of the fact the to most non-smokers cigars don't smell great either, so I try to be respectful. On a few occasions I have had someone tell me that my cigar smelled good :)

As long as I am smoking in a legal place I don't care if people get upset at the smell of my smoke, I hate the smell of that hippie patchouli oil but don't tell them to not wear it!

It's not bad enough I would leave, just how it is, not like cigarette smoke drives me away. There are times I would put out a cigarette if it was blowing toward someone and it bothered then and they were polite about it, my brother is allergic to the smoke so I know there are people it really messes with, nothing wrong with being polite to someone that is polite to you, on the other hand the people that pull the fake cough and throat clear can bite me, either say something or don't but don't play the little games.

That being said there are few places I smoke outside of a herf or my place, so don't really run into people that are bothered by the cigar smoke.

Next season will surely be better under Van Gaal -- how could it be worse?

Are either you or Peter coming to NYC for Liverpool vs ManCity on 7/30? I'd say let's herf, but I'll be in DC for ManUtd vs Inter Milan on 7/29. :cool2:

The World Cup Final is July 13th. The first game of the Guinness International Champions Cup is July 24th. One should have no bearing on the other.

There's gonna be a whole lot of fútbol gettin' watched this summer. :po

So there is actually some science in this. Cigarette smokers rapidly develop a tolerance for nicotine, and the neuro-transmitter "feel good" effect is rapidly blunted. (The nicotinic receptors develop an exhausted tolerance). Occasional exposure to nicotine (ie - many cigar smokers) results in spikes of dopamine and this the sensation is pleasurable. (Many cigarette smokers find smoking a habit rather than a pleasure).

I wondered why cigar smoking felt so good. Was it the taste? The relaxing "me-time" or something in the brain? Anyway - turns out it is likely your nucleus ambiguans. (Probably all of the above actually).

Desperately clutching your fag outside at 40 below to feed a habit is quite simply a different paradigm altogether.

Enjoy your stogies - in moderation - your brain will dig you for it.

I've had to explain to three doctors over the last four years that you don't inhale cigar smoke. This after each was starting their "each cigar is like smoking a pack or two of cigarettes" BS. Each one was stunned by that little factoid.

I actually was asked to leave the smoking patio of a bar while enjoying a cigar because the cigarette smokers complained about the smell. The owner then came out to apologize and explained to me he has a business to run and he has to keep the majority of people happy. He explained he was a cigar smoker and asked me to come back and enjoy a stick with him some time. Unfortunately I was on a trip and couldn't make it back but I respected him for coming out and at least explaining the situation to me. I also had a number of nonsmokers mention they liked the smell of the cigar. If I remember correctly it was a montecristo Yellow Tubo.

Welcome to CA, Joshua. :) This has happened to me so many times over the years that I've entirely given up on smoking a cigar in any "smoking area" that's not attached to a cigar-oriented business.

One notable exception being Europe. It never ever happened to me while traveling in Europe. Granted, that was more than ten years ago, but still. If people were smoking, be it inside or out, I'd fire up a cigar and nobody gave a damn. It was such a treat to smoke cigars almost anytime I wanted, and not be reviled by anyone. Good times. I wonder if it's still that way over there. I sure do hope so. Those days in the United States are a thing you only see in B&W movies anymore. :(

Sitting on some choice sticks for years, only to light them up and they:

1) Are rolled so tight, you get a headache from trying to puff
2) Burn up one side or other to the point of total frustration
3) Stay lit long enough for one half-assed puff before a relight

It's kind of like popping into a bunch of threads all at once, making comments, then never returning to see if anyone has questions or comments on what one said. Basically acting like a fish in a bowl, they swim in circles pointlessly, only paying attention long enough to announce their own presence.

I don't usually worry too much about them. Usually they just interrupt once and then they are gone. Pointless to get annoyed at them, they aren't going to stop doing it, and it just screws up my enjoyment of being there. Like worrying about how someone else smokes their cigar, or if they drink a beverage with it that I don't happen to like.

Gee, I'm starting to feel a little self-conscious.

:D I was going to comment here and thought against it after all that :sl

It is sometimes hard to keep up with it all though.

I travel for work and at our hotels we have smoking rooms of course. I do not smoke cigarettes. On one trip it was 110 degrees outside and I wanted to enjoy a cigar without melting or having heat stroke so I opted for a smoking room. HUGE mistake. It stunk so bad I couldn't breathe and my clothes and bags stunk for two weeks after. To top it off some coworker calls the hotel and our company to complain that I smoked a cigar in a smoking room. The nerve of some people. I kindly let him know what I thought of him and his nasty cigarette smoke right to his face. He didn't deter me but the nastiness of the rooms and the ashtray smell that soaks into everything in the room keeps me out of smoking rooms. I will sit outside and melt.

You know what really drives me nuts? Getting the runaround from both UPS and USPS. I got an email from UPS at 7:18 PM that said the package I was expecting -- and waiting around for all day -- had been delivered. :sw

Entering the tracking number furnished by CI when they shipped my order, the UPS website says they handed my shipment over to my local post office and that the post office "attempted to deliver your UPS SurePost package and left a delivery notice with instructions." :emo2004

Someone please explain this to me. I'm hearing both "delivered" and "attempted to deliver." My wife or myself were home ALL day. No delivery. Door buzzer never buzzed. No notice. Nothing. The UPS website provided a USPS tracking number. Using that number, USPS website says DELIVERED at 8:46 AM. I checked with both neighbors. No cigars. No attempted-delivery slip. :fl

I go back to the UPS website to report the package lost. Website says, "Unable to report a lost package. This shipment was transferred to the local post office for delivery. Please contact the shipper for further assistance." :bh

As a cigar smoker, what really drives you nuts?

I was in a bar once and had just lit my cigar when two people sitting next to me said "You're not going to light that thing? They stink." I replied that it was lit and I've been sitting here for a while with no complaints. They both said "It's lit?" Yeah it's lit and I'm enjoying the dumb look on both of your faces. I didn't say that but I was sure thinking it. We had a good time talking small talk and they both had a better respect for cigar smokers once they got past their misconceptions.
