I was chatting to a fellow who was keen on the name sake of this forum - the Asylum 80.
I'm not certain an 80 ring gauge makes sense, but - what do you guys think of these cigars? Sounds like overkill ???:su

The trend is definitely towards larger RG cigars. While they may not suit the average Asylum smoker, if you look around at any cigar shop, most guys are smoking big cigars. A few years ago 60RG was a huge smoke, today they are common place. Recently, several manufacturers have come out with 70's are they are selling. Even Habanos SA has marked the trend by rolling it's largest stick ever, a 58RG. :sh

The 60 ring gauge are typically not my favorite, I've seen some 70 rg cigars before but not 80. I think they in large part are playing on the idea that most consumers will think that more inherently equals better cigar or better value. I'm not saying there aren't great big rg smokes, I just usually steer clear.

Definitely a gimmick and common denominator play. I like a few of the Kristoffs but the local B&M only carries the toro 6.5 x 56. In my humble opinion, anything over 50 is uncivilized and possibly vulgar.

Kind of on topic - I have not been in the cigar game long enough to answer this myself -

But what is the difference in say a 60 rg to a 40 rg or smaller in terms of flavour? Would the same cigar taste noticeably different in different sizes?

Some opine that different wrapper to filler/binder ratios change flavor. I tend to agree in many cases.

Banter has it's own sub-forum and threads will occasionally get off-topic thru banter. But when a topical thread goes sideways, many others get frustrated and stop reading and participating. It's important to at least try and show some good judgement as to when and how much banter is appropriate.

I bought 4 Kuda Kuda's on my first B&M trip earlier this month. I smoked one at a friend's house and it was ok. I got a few so I could have some when I went to his house. But I realized the same thing, I like other non-flavored cigars better. Haven't smoked one since and have one left that will probably be his the next time I go over.

As for big rings, I picked up a CAO Flathead V770 Big Block Cigar the other day since my friend bought one. We haven't smoked it yet but decided to wait until we're cooking something in the backyard that will take a while so we have time to sit and try it out.

I have a CAO Maduro Belicoso (L'anniversaire ) from the sampler I got so maybe I'll give that one a try tomorrow. I'm nearly done with the Italia at the moment and really liked it. If I didn't have a ton of cigars on their way to me I may have gotten some more of them. Went a little crazy these past few days now that I have a wineador with some room so I think I'm putting the breaks on until I load it up with everything I've ordered and see how much room I have left.

BTW, the CAO sampler I got was the CAO Champions II sampler (http://www.cigarsinternational.com/samplers/65926/cao-champions-sampler-ii/) with the travel humidor. The Italia is the first one I've smoked out of them.

Saw an Asylum 6X80 at at the B&M this past weekend. That's the largest ring gauge cigar that I've picked up and held. Crazy big cigar! Not my style but the guys at the shop said that people have been buying them.

I think my favorite 60 ring gauge cigar is the Cromagnon Mandible - although on most days I would prefer an anthropology.

Smoke what you like, and like what you smoke!
