EVERY team cheats or has players that cheat or coaches that cheat. NFL Football isn't a sport it's a multi-billion dollar entertainment industry. When that much $$$ is at stake everyone's looking for an edge. I mean, c'mon, this is a league in which coaches cover their mouth on the sideline while giving instruction in order to not be "heard" by lip readers hired by the other team.

Was reading today that it's common practice for ref's to adjust ball pressure and many of the QB's actually like the ball on the high side of inflated.

If the balls were inflated and subsequently checked by the refs inside, then checked again outside, where it would be colder, then they would read lower because the air inside the ball would contract. If they were checked after the game, they would have time to get cold and beaten around a bit as well. If they're going to measure pressure it needs to be done at a standardized temperature if they want any kind of accuracy.

It was 51 degrees that is not a huge temp change to cause the pressure change in the balls. What I find interesting is why does't the NFL just supply and keep an eye on all game balls, if you allow a team to supply the balls for their own team you are just asking for / giving room for someone to try and pull something.

Kind of how fans of high-level professional cycling have collective agreed to ignore that everyone's doping. And also how we've collectively agreed to ignore the fact that the performers in our chosen entertainment - football - are causing permanent, debilitating damage to their bodies and minds.

I, for one, have not signed on to cheating in any sport. My personl feeling is that, if the individual or team cheats, they should be punished.

The Patriots have a known and highly publicised cheating record, therefore they should be looked at closely and punished as severly as the rule books allow for repeat offenses. The same should be followed for first time offenders.

I despise the Patriots despite living in the heart of New England (grew up a Bills fan in central NY), but wah wah wah ... the only reason people make a big deal about the Patriots "cheating" is because they've been dominant in the Brady/Belichick era. No one else is even close in terms of consistently fielding a contending team year in and year out. It's goddamn maddening to be sure, so people jump on the whole cheating argument. If this were the Jags or the Raiders or my Bills, no would give a rat's ass.

I kind of think of the New England hate about the same as Yankees hate.
I always say I hate the Yankees. I don't in the least, really. They're a storied institution of winners that make the game better. I just love to watch them lose. :D

I love watching New England play ball. Tom Brady is an incredible quarterback and I can't think of a coach in the NFL right now that is as talented and as complete as Bill Belichick. His pedigree is outstanding and there is nobody who works harder.
It does drive me nuts that he dresses like a doof.
That said, I'm not a New England fan. I don't root for them to lose as hard as I do the Yanks, but I do root for them to lose so the Steelers don't have to go anywhere near them in the playoffs.

I figure if I hate on the cheating, or Brady's temper, or Belichick's doofy hoodies and it keeps me away from watching them play ball, I lose.
They are an astonishing franchise. One of the very best I've ever seen in 40 years of watching the NFL.

You're right: it is always cold when they play, but how often are they measured after a game, always or only upon protest? BTW, I hate cheating too, I just want what happens to be based on science and not emotion.

In that league, the home team provides the game balls for BOTH teams offenses. ie - a single set of game balls everyone uses

Yes, each team currently uses their own balls. Interestingly, the change was spearheaded by P. Manning and Brady back in 2006. I read that balls inflated at 68ºF to 13.5 psi will read 11.6psi at 32ºF but that wasn't the temperature at game time. I read an article where the reporter spoke with a former NFL ball boy. He said that they all inflate their balls to suit the QB, scrub the surface with a brush to remove the slippery coating and then bring them to the Refs locker room. He said that there was always a gauge there but they usually just squeezed and thumped them a bit and examined the laces. He also stated that everybody rolls the dice on inflation pressures figuring that if a couple get rejected it's no big deal. He went on to say that once the balls are approved they move directly to the field where it would be nearly impossible to tamper with them without being seen. An under-inflated ball, though easier to grip, would only be useful in short situations as it would not carry as far, thrown or kicked. If the NFL were serious about cheating, they would start vacating wins where cheating is found. I've never heard of that happening.

Belecheck was saying they tested several balls at different psi's and no one could tell what the psi was with any accuracy of each ball.

I believe you are correct in what will happen after the Super Bowl, but I think the fine will be light (if any fine is assigned). The rest of the league I'd imagine does not want this precedent set for something they are all in violation of at some point during the season...

There's a rubber bladder in the balls. A 50* drop in temperature would effect about a 10psi drop in pressure. Much the same as your car tires.
I have no idea what the stated pressures were, but I'm thinking it was relatively mild for New England that day? What was it, about 30-40 degrees?
It's real easy to figure out if it was intentional by knowing just a few more variables.

With the precedent set on how the NFL handled Payton with the player bounties (team and coach bearing the brunt of the responsibility), I'd be surprised if Belichick and the team didn't shoulder most of the blame and whatever penalties are imposed. They are doing their best to keep Brady out of it though, which I find laughable. :r

I forgot to convert gauge pressure to absolute pressure which makes it seem like it takes more of a temp difference to change the pressure.

The unclear thing is if they refs actually inflated the balls supplied by the Patriots or not, people assume they did but there's no confirmation of it.
