View Full Version : So, what do you do for a living?

Dude Here

Work. It's something we've all gotta do (except for you retired folks). So, what do you do?

I currently work for the Sheriff's department here as a jailer. It's not a bad gig, pays decent and the psych building I work in makes for some interesting days for sure. Not a job I see myself retiring from though. I'm hoping this year to test and get on with the fire department. Before this I worked in a Home Depot warehouse and was a "membership consultant" at a gym. Before all that I served in the Army.

So, that's me. How about the rest of you folks?

Used to work for a local hospital but we've been absorbed in to a national chain of Catholic hospitals so I'm just a cog in the machine now.
SysAdmin - servers/network although nowadays very little network as that's been moved to a different product line. Heavy in to virtualizing these days with Hyper-V and Citrix. Just hoping this lasts another 10 years so I can retire.

Last six years i have worked for a company called ACT Pipe and Supply. We sell pipe and fittings for water lines, sewer lines, lawn sprinklers, over-head fire protection sprinklers, and fabricate the fire systems to necessary spec's.

i work on the operations side of the company and make sure stuff gets done, from deliveries, pick ups, transfers to and from our other branches. i also make sure maintenance, upkeep, and solve any problem that may arise.

Since Halloween, when my job went south, leaving me alone and cold to face cruel winter's wrath, I've revived my true calling as poet.

It doesn't pay at all, at all, which some would say is still too much, but yet the hours are fine.

I work for #3 in the cell phone industry. Coming up on 13 years. No, I can't fix your cell phone. No, I can't get you a discount. And no, I can't fix your crappy coverage issues :r
I work on the wire line side of the network. Technical support for the control center that maintains the fiber optic network. We like to compare our work to what plumbers do, we fix the pipe, not the water. I actually love it for the most part, it's the people that sometimes piss me off. :)

I'm a user interface designer, have been for about the last 20 or so years, sites I have worked on or led the design team for are, to name a few, Amazon, Cabelas, AA, AT&T, HM, Viacom, Royal Post, Fidelity, etc., (while with ATG), I then worked for Intuit on QuickBooks, Quicken and Quicken Loans. I now work for one of the largest Independent Broker Dealers in the country. It was more exciting in the old days when we were actually creating things like "others have also viewed.." and custom controls on pages that are now common place.

My favorite project was the Federal Air Marshals' secure portal right after 9/11, made me feel like I was doing something to help.

Currently I am cultivating my replacement in Nevada so I can grow our industrial sector in Canada and the US. I guess I am one of the lucky ones, as I love my job. As I get to work with some really great leadership and business partners. Constantly learning and growing.
