Guys, I'm all over this...If there is a crap cigar bomb, I'm all over it. I got way excited about cigars and found a bunch of "great deals" that turned out to be not so great. Tell me where to send them!

Split em' between Frank & I "Steve" I'm always wanting to try new things since I am fairly new...or better yet send them to the troops (or is that too harsh for them?)

Troops!!! Many of them will smoke anything they can get their hands on.

I've been offloading my infused to the troops (got a local girl serving in the sandbox...she's new to cigars and likes the pretty flavored ones)

Ones I have that I'll never smoke...a box of Carinos, THREE boxes of Augusto Reyes, a bunch of Oliveros XL (for Men)...yes it actually says that on the label. And a large assortment of other CBID orphans.

Never had any of those so I can't attest, however I am sure you could unload them on the troops. Or BOMB FRANK!:tu

Do you have any Maduros?

I got a sampler of some biggins from VS.. out of the ones I have tried.. I liked one, a few were ok and the others.. I am trying to figure out how to get rid of them.. haha.
I've smoked a few of the 55s and they're OK. The Vintage Select as well. My biggest gripe was that I seemed to get a lot of sticks with overglued bands, and it was impossible to get them off without tearing the wrapper.

Victor Sinclair? ........or Thompson?

Thompson of course. I've only had a Victor Sinclair Primeros and I must say it was pretty much the worst cigar I have ever tried.

I do enjoy the Baccarat Game Robusto. A box cost me 66$ So at just over 3$ a smoke I enjoy these when I want something to smoke that I may not have time to finish or if I'm going to be sharing with others who don't really "appreciate" fine leaf. Very light, mild smoke with a sweet gum cap. Not bad at all.

I know Thompson has been pretty shady in the past, but i really think they have been trying to improve their reputation. I've bought a few packages from them recently and haven't had any complaints. Their Powerhouse 16 Sampler that use to come with a 20 count humidor now comes with a 10 count travel case, due to the fact that they have sold so many packages that they ran out of humidors, but anyway i still think it's a great deal and can be found here http://www.thompsoncigardeals.com/product/POWERHOUSE-SIXTEEN-CHURCHILL-COMBO/

These have quickly become my go to smoke for a cheap thrill as of late. Picked up a bundle a while back at Famous Smoke Shop and was thrilled by the amount of flavor they pack. IMO, these are definately worth the $34.99 price tag for 20 good tasting sticks!

I've gotta say, re: Thompson. They've got a bad rap and yeah, it's largely well earned.

But as far as cheap smokes go? I've now been through a couple hundred of those Roly torpedoes and, at a buck a piece? I actually reach for them. They're not better than the good stuff. But a few bundles in the humi go a long way to saving my nice sticks from being smoked when they won't be appreciated.

I've noticed Famous started carrying them as well, though at a little higher price.

I am trying a Factory Throwouts 99 tonight. Interestingly, the label prominently says that these cigars have a Ecuador Sungrown wrapper and Aged Dominican filler. In the tiny print on the bottom of the package it says it has some "non-tobacco ingredients added." Like what?!!! I taste a tiny bit of vanilla...maybe that is the non-tobacco ingredient?

BTW, I've found a hair or two rolled up in a premium cigar before...I hope that is not it!

JohnRider

The $1.25/stick Factory Throwouts 99 is a 7.25x52. The wrapper has an even medium brown color with a few medium heavy veins. The cap is a little wonky, but does the job. Pre-light, the wrapper has a sweet aroma - it reminds me of Swiss Miss cocoa mix. The cigar has 2 or 3 soft spots, but no hard ones. The cigar started out dull and tasteless, but after about an inch some nice flavors started to kick in. As I noted earlier, there is a hint of sweetness and vanilla in there, as well as some floral flavors. Now I am near the halfway point and the flavor is mild-medium and has become a little more cedar. The quantity of smoke is acceptable. The ash is moderately flaky with a broad mixture of light gray and almost black areas. Draw has been about right and the burn has been very even. No relights yet and it is holding a reasonably good ash. The room note (aroma in the room) is nice - it doesn't stink like a cheap cigar - and also has a vanilla note to it. I'm thinking it has some vanilla flavor added...but I could be wrong...I've not run across that flavor before, so I am thinking it is part of the "non-tobacco ingredients" they talk about in the fine print. Overall, it is very smokeable. I'm diggin' it just fine. I would choose this stick over the similarly priced sticks I've had. One feature about the packaging I like is the cello - it has a pull strip that actually works. I wouldn't mind seeing that feature on my regular lineup of smokes. So, for the guys in this thread who suggested it, thanks, and I agree for a uber-cheap stick it is an okay smoke in my book.

I still enjoy the AF Curly Head Natural.

The short filler is from the left over Don CArlos, Hemingway and Opus Tobacco. With a nice cameroon wrapper. Has a nice sweet taste to it. Always be a a few in the humi

Delicious smokes.

I've never been let down by one, despite it being what amounts to AF's garbage.

I bought a "Famous Brand 2nds - Nicaraguan" bundle from JR which ended up being $1 per stick and let me tell you it's a fantastic stick for the price.

Supposedly JR stepped on someone's toes with them and they were discontinued.

"Famous Brand 2nds - Nicaraguan" bundle from JR which ended up being $1 per stick"

I wanted these at a $1 each. Bought on a "Check Out page" promotion at maybe $18, maybe $16 the bundle - geez, it was a bundle of 10! I just didn't notice.

An alright smoke, but it would have been a lot better at $1 than it was at $1.70.

Bought the Dominicans too. Same reaction to them.

Thats is okay.... There are similar smokes on the list. I brought it up because 1) I do belive it is a cheap price for a good cigar.
2)For people that either want to try Tats (reserve line) it is a cheap way to do so.
3)Not commenting on anyone elses tastes/preferences, but I have never had a 50 cent or $1 cigar that I enjoyed enough to purchase in mass or make part of my weekly rotation.

Once again that is my humble opinion and is not meant to insult or bias anyone else.

So to answer your question i would say

Partagas Mille Fleurs
El Ray De Mundo Choix Supreme
Pretty much every Fonseca
H.Upamnn Corona Minor
Quintero Panetelas

And for NCs ive found the Spanish Galleon to be pretty decent if you buy the bundles.

Thanks...hopping to get a couple different inexpensive cigars while I let my better stuff age a little.

Those are in-expensive for cubans but they still wont be $2-3 a stick.

And if your ageing a little then Bolivar royal coronas,Punch punch and Jun lopez No2 are well worth it.

thanks! I just got a box of the erdm cs and loved the first one, the second one was ehh. I don't plan on ageing any of the inexpensive cigars as I want to smoke those while my better cigars age :). I was recently reading about the JLP 1, sounds like a good inexpensive cigar. Price point I'm looking for is between 50-100. I know that leaves a lot of option open, but I'm only willing ot pay 100 for much higher quality.

Reaver2145
03-26-2012, 08:58 PM
JLPs are nice for the price but you can get a much better smoke for a few extra quid same goes for Guantanamera though those are by far the worst thing to come out of Cuba since cohiba released the siglo 5.

Hoyo De Monterrey Le Hoyo De Maire are 135 a box for me and are much better than any JLP great quality too.

Though im working off English prices so ill be lucky to find anything under $9 a stick even for JLPs.

Very surprised not to find Gran Habano Vintage 2002's on the list. They're great at the price point. Habano wrappers aren't my favorite, but these are delish, and are often around $1.50 on cbid.

Perdomo's 10th Anny Maduro is also good. Super-smooth after a bit of rest. I think I've gotten then around $3 a stick.

Also, really, really like 601 Blue Labels and Tatuaje Havanas, probably two of my "everyday" favorites. They're on the monster all the time for about $3-$3.50 a stick.

Dunno who considers what cheap, but at $4, you cannot beat the Padron 2000 maduro, or the A. Fuente 858 maduro. Both are great sticks, and IMO are better than many $7-10 sticks out there.

Great additions, totally forgot about the GH's will have to def add these and your other suggestions to the list......anyone want to update that list? Jeff???

In the same vein as Baccarat, I'm enjoying Diamondbacks which can be had for $2 a stick in 5-packs on CBid (around $4-$5 for a single at your B&M). If you like Drew Estates Natural Dirt, check out the Baccarat Maduro... these are harder to find in B&Ms but can be had every few weeks on CBid, usually $2-4 per stick in 5-packs.

Cigars International has EST 1844s on sale. All 20 count boxes are currently $49.95. I've never tried them and don't have room for a box, so I picked up a 5er for $15. $3 a stick seemed like a decent deal.

Hahaha I tried one, once. It was hands down the worst cigar of my life.
I imagine the flavor tasting like smoking a cockroach that was wearing a straw hat. <---nice review, right?
I will never again smoke one. I even skipped their booth at Cigarfest, they can keep them even if they are free.

I really like the Padilla Habano. Picked up a box of 20 torpedo from CI on a one day deal last week. $2 a stick. It's a good deal if it rolls around again and I would pay more than that for them. The Nestor Miranda Special Edition Torpedo Rosado 4.0" x 58 are $2 a stick right now too. Picked up 20. Good everyday sticks for the price IMHO.

Not sure if I've mentioned these. Forgive me if I had.

But my current two favorite cheap smokes are:

the Iron Horses, at just under $50 a box (on Famous I think. Just about the same price for every size), they're a really tasty "medium-full" stick. Every time I've smoked one I lean back surprised, look at it and nod appreciatively.

and the Roly Torpedos, which I just bought (gasp) another 2 boxes of 100 each of from Thompson at $99 per. They're ugly as home grown sin, spongey as all hell, but they draw nice and fit an light-medium "early day" or "something light and tasty" profile that I reach for quite a bit.

Now I'm by no means a Gurkha fan, but I've found that some of the Gurkha Empire series are ok sticks. I forgot what numbers, but the darker ones seem to have a decent flavor. If you can snag 'em on the devil site for about $2 per, it's a pretty good deal.

It's already on the list, but I just picked up a bundle of Flor de Oliva Petit Torpedos. The flavor is great, with a mild sweetness that doesn't come off as artificially sweetened (even though I'm pretty sure it is). That said, I'm 4-sticks into the bundle and every single stick is packed EXTREMELY densely in the foot making for an EXTREMELY tough draw. I smoke these at the office, so I've fashioned a draw tool out of an unfolded paper clip and it's the only way I can loosen these up enough to get a decent draw. It's like the roller put the same amount of tobacco in the tapered foot of a torpedo as would normally be there in the foot of a Robusto, making it extremely densely packed.

If I pick up another bundle, I'll likely go with the Robusto or Toro... but something like the C'est La Vie Sweet from CI might be my next cheap sweet bundle.

Of course my first post would be on the cheap smokes section! ........ lol... i see many of you guys are listing the "826 Slow aged Perdomo". what would you guys compare it to? being a college student, cheaper cigars are starting to climb higher and higher on my need list. im getting tired of the bags of trader jacks (im going to get tired of my fav pool cigar before summer starts!) and i need to find something decent and cheap... any thoughts on the JR alternatives? Specifically the Montecristo alternative?

The Slow-Aged are my every-other-day stick, especially mid-day.
I prefer the naturals over the maduros.
Medium body, pleasant mix of leather, wood, florals & a touch of citrus.
They're better if you "slow age" them longer - about 6 months or more.
Then the citrus is more understated.
The last third can sometimes get bitter, though.
I recommend the Glorioso (Toro) size.
They are often offered on CigarBid for decent prices,
so try a 5-pack before committing to a bundle.

I can't comment on the JR Alternatives, as I've never tried 'em.

For anyone interested in infused (gasp), I've been enjoying the Isla del Sol from Drew Estate. I had the Corona several months ago and wasn't impressed... hot burn and bitter by 1/2 way through. I gave a 5-pack of the Toro a try from CigarMonster ($15, free shipping) and it was a much different experience. Burn was cooler, slower, a bit milder, with more of the coffee infusion coming through. At $3/stick, I don't know that you can do much better for an infused... especially without the need to buy huge quantities to hit that price.

Hello my cheap smokin' bastage brethren. Joe (BillyBarue) has asked my to stop by and make some suggestions. I haven't had the time to read through the years I have missed, so forgive me if any of these are reposts. Hopefully some of these are of use to you..

Most of the cheapies I have been buying as of late have been on CB. Holt's has not been offering as many closeouts but there are still a few. Prices quoted are what I paid, YMMV.

Nestor Miranda SS Rothschild - Holts - $25/10 - Aged Pepin, was highly rated. It was milder than most out of this factory so it got lost in the crowd. Not worth original MSRP and worth more than this closeout price.

La Aurora Rothschild -Holts - $50/25 Just about everyone, B&M included have boxes of these on special/closeout. They have a less refined version of the signature Dominican taste. These aren't going to be as smooth as Preferidos/107/LJ 300. It is also a different taste than Nicaraguan tobacco if that is all you have smoked. Those caveats aside, they are good cigars with some depth.

Tatuaje El Triunfador No. 5 -CB - <$67/25 with careful bidding - I bought several boxes of these full price over the years, and at less than $3 a stick they are an outstanding deal. Please save some for me.

Tabacos Baez Serie H - $37/20 - These were a bigger step up from their SF equivalent than I expected. The same amount of spice, but the taste was fuller, 'cleaner' and better balanced. The SF is a killer deal even at B&M price, but this CB release is a better cigar for the same cost.

Padilla Artemis - on CB - $13/5 - This is one that 5ers seem to be better priced. Watch the boxes, but paying less for a 5er to try is nice. Reported to be rolled at Fabrica de Tabacos Raices Cubana.

Nicarao Classico/Especial/Exclusivo - on CB - $11/5 - Any of these 3 are a steal. Once made by DPG for Tropical, Patel brought the name at one point and I was done with it. Perhaps due drunken CB bidding, the Classico arrived in a shipment. The Classico blend really tastes the same to me as the original. The Especial is a bit spicier and the Exclusivo slaps on a maddie wrapper. These remain on the radar, chances are you will bid against me to get them. I haven't been tempted to try the bundled lines;unless you hear from someone who does like them I would avoid the Seleccion and HSG lines

Padilla Degustacion Collection Tin - On CB - <$25 - try 2 of each of 5 Padilla blends for $2.50 a stick or less. I've purchased 4 tins since April.

Vegas Cubanas Generosos - On CB - $3/1 - Singles seem to be the least noticed way to bid on these wonderful aged Pepins. Milder than the blues but more flavor than the Cabaiguan; though a bit less depth than either. Hard to pass up for 1/2 the price I paid on clearance at my B&M. Not up often so be prepared to fight.

Sencillo Platinum - on CB - $15/5. 5ers best price IME. Honduran cigar that doesn't suck made by Eiroa for the God of Fire folks. Like other Eiora cigars, they manage to avoid the muddy/earthy flavors that most Hondurans exhibit; this is a good thing to me. I bought several of these at full retail B&M, so this price is a no brainer.

Pueblo Dominicano - On CB - $34/20. These continue to be a good, slightly spicy Dominican cigar with some depth. I believe Quesada once made them when they were 'limited edition' in fancy packaging. This version has the AJ Fernandez taste all over it and is every bit as good as their pricier offerings.

Diesel Corona TIN - On CB - $73/30 - Here's another AJ cigar, this is a firecracker. Nice spice and some depth to back it. A great smoke after a meal. It smokes for much longer than you'd suspect, but at $2 and change it is a great 15 minute break on the cheap.

5 Vegas Relic - On CB - $10/5. Sometimes you can get the box of 24 for $40, but it is a very swell looking box and it isn't worth waiting for the box to go unnoticed. Unless my taste buds deceive me, this is the matasa anniversary blend stuffed into an uglier wrapper. This is not like the typical 5 Vegas cigar.. Much bolder than most, but also more refined and complex than the cask strength which to me has the spice but no depth.

Nica Libre Principe - On CB - $32/20 - These taste to me like a slightly less refined Padron x000 series at half the price. The box press is nice, and the principe has a bit more flavor than the larger sizes. I'm aging some of these.

Swag Lavish -On CB - $13/5 - Nice Corojo flavor, a bit of spice but smooth. There is enough depth to back the spice and some flavor change ups during its length. This is one I've been circling like a buzzard for the right price.

Vigilante - on CB - $25/20 - a mild corojo cigar. Same label but not the same cigar that was sold on B&M shelves 6 years ago. This is one dimensional, but still a very pleasant cigar for the drive into work. Will taste sweet if you take your coffee black.

Arganese Nicaraguan on CB - $15/20 can be had for less than a buck a stick. No other cigar in this price range is worth smoking IMO. One dimensional cigar, the true yard gar but still tastes decent to me. One to give moochers that you won't feel bad or be embarrassed to give them. I won't give away cigars I wouldn't smoke myself. I don't like any of the other varieties from this company.

EPC New Wave Connecticut Stellas - B&M - $80/20 - I have to mention this cigar even though $4 a stick is pushing the 'cheap smoke' envelope. I keep buying box after box because they are such a great cigar for their price and (don't tell anyone) are worth double. This cigar has replaced the Padron Londres as my benchmark cigar. This is a JOAT cigar that fits the bill regardless of experience. There is depth and mild spice for old hands but is refined and smooth to blow away the folks used to much costlier Dominican Montes, RyJ, etc. This cigar is a gustatory experience equivalent/akin to the aural experience of listening to Grado SR80s after the significantly costlier Bose QCs or (shudder) Beats.

Cigars I didn't like:
Nestor Miranda Dominicano on Holts
Argyle on Holt's
Kinky Friendman on CB
Devil's Weed on CB
Varina Farms on CB
Garo Vintage on CB
Bahia Trinidad on CB

You aren't worthy... :r

I've been getting good Drew Estates sticks in what I'd consider the "cheap smoke" price range ($3/stick) from Cigar Monster here lately... the Spiced Wingman comes up for $30 and includes 5 Acid Kuba Kuba and 5 Acid Subculture Mantra (a longer but milder Kuba Kuba). I've seen Tabak Especial 5-packs for $17 and Isla del Sol 5-packs for $13 which, when combined, comes in at $3/stick. Any time I can grab a good Drew stick in this price range I do, plus you can even stack the Famous freebie coupons on top for even better value depending on what's available.

I'm a bit surprised no one has mentioned Maria Mancini yet, as far as I can tell. It's been a while since I've had one, but I always thought they gave good value.

I am really studying this thread due to a need to reduce my overall cost of cigar smoking. Job was eliminated a while back and I am needing to keep the cost down as much as possible. I have tried several smokes on this thread and had some good ones, but the Maria Mancini has been an outstanding value to me. Dark, rich smoke that is really good and enjoyable. Thanks for pointing these out to me as they are now on my go to list. Steve

Just got a box of Famous Iron Horse 6x60 for a cheap long smoke
Had my first one yesterday and I've got to say I was impressed - box of 20 for $52

Last third started getting a little rough but that still gave me an hour of decent smoking for less than $3

Here's another good one - at least for now.
La Estrella Cubana Fubar Fuerte.
Cigars Int'l is selling a short Corona (4-1/2" x 46) $28.54 for 30.
Medium strength maduro with sweet coffee & dark chocolate taste.
Not affiliated, just like to pass along good deals.

Atlantic has something called the "One-N-Done Nicaraguan Rothschild" on for 24.95 for a bundle of 20. I've just ordered a bundle and will report back with thoughts and if it's a reasonable smoke.

Did you ever post your review? And if so where can I find it. :cf2

Tons of great sticks out there under $ 4.00...you're missing out on some goods ones. Famous Nic 5000 Toros are about $ 1.60 a stick and I'd put them against most $ 10.00 sticks every day of the week. :2

I will second that. I bought a bundle last fall on recommendation of Mac. A GREAT smoke for the price.

There's a number of PDR's listed over the last 20 pages, but I want to add one more that I didn't see mentioned:

Pinar Del Rio Small Batch Black Corojo. They have a gold label and I've only seen them at CI, CBID, C com. I'm down to last few of a box of 20 toros I won on CBID last Dec for $19 and they are really stellar. Perfect construction, very smooth and great, if muted, peppery flavors.

Guayacan Gallo Pinto: I have been adding a couple of these into my hand with my intended take during my last few trips to the cigar shop. I have turned them to ash while throwing shoes, cutting grass, and grilling meats. This cigar performed reasonably well. They can be picked up online for under the $4 I pay at the shop. But even at the $4-5 dollar range I am quite satisfied .

online bundle = $2.** I'm in
